Crudbucket: GalFriday: Why are the passengers still on the plane while they search for the bomb?
Shouldn't it be:
Step 1: GET THE PASSENGERS OFF OF THE PLANE
Step 2:  Search for the bomb

Duh, what if one of the passengers IS the bomb?

Isn't that a bit of an Extrem(us) idea?

Ukrainian you say? I'm bet the guys at GRB are patting themselves on the back. What better venue than this to discredit the anti-Russian movement with a "terror attack" attempt that never put anyone in harm's way?

Now, comrade tank is hungry! They need some Chechan rebel attacks for a reason for another invasion!

Perhaps he was just trying to land the plane is Sochi so that it could be used as a hotel.  From what I hear, a hijacked plane is better accommodations than are currently available.

From TFA: Within 10 minutes of receiving a highjack alert, 2 F-15's sortied from a Turkish base, to escort the flight back to the airport, after the turn-around.  "Dr. Strangelove II: Electric Boogaloo."

Our very own Olympic expert, Mitt Romney, on the London Olympics:

"It's hard to know just how well it will turn out," Romney told NBC. "There are a few things that were disconcerting. The stories about the private security firm not having enough people, the supposed strike of the immigration and customs officials... that obviously is not something which is encouraging."

Our very same Olympic expert, Mitt Romney, on the Sochi Olympics:

"Well there's no such thing as 100 percent security anywhere in the world," Romney told The Associated Press on Saturday. "At the Sochi fields of play there will be very adequate security."

Sure, there's a lack of potable (or cleaning) water. There are communal toilets. The sidewalks and roads are still being constructed. They can't keep wild dogs out of hotel rooms. There's a toothpaste plot. But Mitt is more impressed with Sochi than he was with London.

How could America have passed up putting this man in charge of the country?

I don't read it like that at all.  I think it has more to do with cherry-picking quotes than anything else.  I doubt very much that Mitt is more impressed with Sochi than he was with London.

The question if IF something bad do happen in the next couple weeks that embarrasses the hell out of Putin will he hold back on the Chechens and the mountain folks of the Caucasus or will he go all out crazy medieval on them?

On one hand he is a very calculative bastard but on the other he is also a stone cold killer and a psychopath.

Putin on the ritz already?  Silly muslims, don't you know he's looking for a reason to go full Stalin on your ass?

Long-term strategic planning doesn't seem to be the forte of terrorists.  Just ask Osama.

19 wankers with box cutters managed to cut the balls off the entire western world.  Seems that they can get it right when it matters

Depends on what you mean by "get it right" -- they succeeded in sowing panic in the short-term.  In the long-term they destroyed their own organization, with their leadership dead or in prison.  Meanwhile the US continues right on ticking, with the admitted annoyance of having to take your shoes off in the airport.

...so if slowing airline security checks was their ultimate end, bravo*.

/ * it wasn't, of course.  He outlined his positions explicitly after the attacks: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motives_for_the_September_11_attacks ( In bin Laden's November 2002 "Letter to America", he explicitly stated that al-Qaeda's motives for their attacks include: Western support for attacking Muslims in Somalia, supporting Russian atrocities against Muslims in Chechnya, supporting the Indian oppression against Muslims in Kashmir, the Jewish aggression against Muslims in Lebanon, the presence of U.S. troops in Saudi Arabia, U.S. support of Israel, and sanctions against Iraq. ) -- none of which improved, from his standpoint, as a result of 9/11

RedZoneTuba: From TFA: The 110 passengers are still on board the plane, a public diplomacy officer said Friday night in Turkey. Security officers were searching for a bomb aboard the plane, the transportation official said.

So you suspect a bomb is on the plane and keep everyone on board while you search it?!?  I think I might want a word with someone if I was a passenger.

Yeah, good luck. You know passengers have no rights on planes except to sit there or be labeled terrorists.

So a dude and his bro are out driving in the middle of the night through Kentucky. They get pulled over and the cop walks up and says to the dude driving "your headlights are out of adjustment and I'm giving you a ticket for it."

The dude says "I've never heard of such things!"

The cop slaps the dude across the face.

"What was that for?"

"You don't disrespect a law officer in the state of Kentucky."

The cop walks over to the passenger side of the car and gets the bro to roll his window down. Immediately the cop slaps the bro across the face.

The bro looks at the cop and says "I didn't do anything! What was that for?"

The cop smiles and says "Just making your wish come true."

He certainly did tick off the citizens of London, and he ticked off their Prime Minister. It's hardly cherry-picking to provide his quotes on security for both London and Sochi. But, if it makes you feel better, the Washington Times and Fox News also saying he thinks Sochi will be safe. And here's Fox News and the Washington Times on Romney's comments on the London Olympics. Both are conservative outlets, so they would, if anything, cherry-pick in his favor.

And Romney really was the best among the primary candidate frontrunners. He really was the best of that lot.

A threat is very different from an attack and an attack is very different from a successful attack.

I could call in a threat to Sochi if I wanted to.

have you completely failed to notice the terrorist bombings late last year or the recent threats?

As much as Russia has botched the Olympics, I think there are 2 things that won't happen.  A suicide bomber is not getting anywhere near the games and if someone tries the old 'fly-a-jumbo-jet-into-a-stadium-full-of people' trick, Russia will shoot it down.

Terrorist attacks outside of Sochi?   Well, yeah, it's game on.  Russia can't stop those

If I were in Russia right now, I think Sochi would be the safest place you could find as far as terror attacks go.

Stop frothing at the mouth.  I hadn't heard anything that Romney had said about the 2014 Olympics until I read your post, but I'm trying hard to find anything wrong with what he said or where he said he was more impressed with Sochi than London.

Like it or not, Romney is a very public figure that was heavily involved with the SLC Olympics.  It makes sense that the media may interview him.  That he didn't come up with any words of wisdom that enlightened us is far from surprising.  From your quotes, he's being quite diplomatic about the whole thing.  I didn't vote for the asshole, but I agree with what he said.  You can never guarantee 100% security, but I think Russia has done an adequate job with respect to guarding against terror.

And you'd be laughing twice as hard if he had taken on other concerns regarding infrastructure based on a few articles and tweets from the press who were less than impressed with their hotel accommodations.

Did you see the anti-aircraft installation right next to the Olympics?  Did you hear anything about thousands of troops protecting the area?

No terror will happen in Sochi.  Now Volgograd or any number of other  Russian cities it could happen, but that could happen any day of the year just as it could happen in Boston or London or Madrid or Cairo.

One thought occurred to me.  In a few months when the Olympics are over and all the security is gone and the hollow shells of hotels are left to rot, maybe some terrorists will sneak up and blow up an empty stadium - for the symbolism or something.
