The first and last pictures are awesome.

The early 70s were a freaky time. Because I was very young I saw the Counter Culture from a distance, but it left an indelible image. It's not a time I would want to go back to.

Holy Christ.

I remember going to skating rinks as a kid in the early 80s, and hearing the older folks say 'yeah, this is ok, but...it's nothing on what it was like in the 70s'.

Looking at this, I wonder why on Earth anyone would yearn for it.

2014-02-07 01:24:40 PM
Those are disturbing on a very, very basic level.

2014-02-07 01:33:33 PM
OK
I was a kid in the 70s.
lessee what we have here.
Starts off with Matt Mcconaughey, gay, cruising for boys.
Next pic, Ah yes, children smoked back then, I do remember that. I did, too.
And there's that kid they made all the "big eyed kid" paintings of. That is Iconic 70s shait right there.
Moving on..
Next pic: Excellent. This is choice. Slutty middle schooler with her defiant friend shooting the photog the finger.
That is Iconic, and so much like every night of my 13 year old summers.
Next pic: Scary Adults. Probably perverts.
Next: Yeah. Big kids didn't know not to wear horizontal patterns back them. they looked like a TV on the fritz.
Next: Skank. Her boyfriend's a mechanic and they live together in sin.
Next: He knocked her up. That's subby's real father.
Next: Pretty typical of fashion for girls back then, and very very sexy.
Next: Why, Miss Cyrus, who are your friends? Are they rock stars?
Next: Looks like the Schnapps paid off.

Yep. classic stuff.
Makes me look back and cry.

To put it in perspective, this was an era when every high school male was worried he would soon be drafted and sent off to Vietnam to die. So they partied well.

Yep. When I started high school in 1990, they had a smoking lounge. For students. And I remember walking by the teachers lounge and it reeking of cigarettes. And this was a very well-to-do high school.

My high school had a really nice outdoor area right off the cafeteria for smoking. Later on, they painted a line through the middle of it and said you had to stay on one side (furthest away from the doors and windows) to smoke, before banning it altogether.

We had a student strike, walk out - in order to get a smoking lounge.
We got it.
It was a great place to take a drink

We too had an outdoor smoking area outside our cafeteria.... that was 1981.

My nephew graduated from the same school a couple years ago. When I asked him if they still had the smoking area outside the caf, he looked at me like I had lobsters coming out of my ears.

BTW, mom and dad the name of your grandkid is Aristotle Camus McPherson. They so thought of that name before you.

Aw Yeah! Tally FL in the late 70's at Skate-Inn West. You weren't allowed to smoke in the main room but you could in the bathroom. Holy Smokes (see what I did there?), smoke was so thick even Yukon Cornelius would get lost. I asked my 1st girlfriend to couple skate there and we ended up out in back of the building smoking a J and making out. Good Times, ain't we lucky we got 'em, Good Times.

Forget high school, my uncle got drafted while in graduate school. Somewhere I have cassette tapes he sent to my grandmother where you can hear mortars landing in the near distance. Luckily he came home unscathed and went right back and finished his M.S. On the other hand, our next door neighbors' son came back really messed up. He got into drugs over there to cope and brought all those demons back home.

As for 'momjeans,' well, there's just no excuse.

Yep, by the time I was a junior (1992 or so), they got rid of it.

Kids just moved to what everyone called "the smoking tree" because it was huge and you could easily hide behind it.

Late 80s the roller rink was where my parents would abandon me and my sisters for a few hours so they could have their alone time. We'd be left there with enough money for skate rentals and food. We'd usually eat something cheap so we could save some of the money and use it on the arcade games in between doing the rounds on the rink.

Come to think of it, a skating rink near my home just got renovated and is having a soft opening, supposedly it's in its full 70s glory.

blondy here is the closest thing to a hippie they've got.

Where are the blacks? you say?
Colored film didn't come out until the late 70's I think.

/on a serious note - I'm sure the two groups had their own preferences on what to do on a Saturday night. For example, how many blacks do you see at a beach?

Three of these folks look terrified as hell.
What has been seen cannot be unseen

Betep: Gene Rayburn owned the local roller skating rink.

Is that where he gave Charles Nelson Reilly piggy-back rides?

Is it just me, or are these pics from the MANSON Family ranch??

TFA headlines this as Tampa, but this was obviously a country western place.

He's described this as "southern Hillsborough County" which can be a world away from Tampa (the city). In one photo, there is what looks like a Future Farmers of America jacket from Hillsborough. My guess is that this was down in Brandon or Riverview, which are quite a bit more rural.

The recent past we can laugh at.

The distant past makes us sigh.

It's the middle past that gives us the willies. Things are waaaay too different there.

Ah, for the good ol' 70s. Young boys were so much easier to pick up back then before all this 'Stranger Danger' sh*t got started.

The 70's were great. I didn't patronize skating rinks, but had a blast, and the girls were absolutely hot - halter tops, hip huggers, short shorts, and the drugs were still fantastic and readily available. Cops would typically just confiscate or dump if you were careless enough to get caught, liquor stores didn't ID, music up until disco hit was great....good, good times.

And I am so glad my daughters are growing up now instead of then.

The 60s didn't hit middle america until it was in the Sear's catalog which was in the 70s. Sure there was that one guy/gal who ran off to find themselves but the hair, the bell bottoms, paisley, etc wasn't on the menu for the masses.

I grew up in central Fla. in the 70s and 80s and this is quoted for truth. And get the hell off my lawn, punk.

maxx2112: skrame: The subtle middle finger is what makes this picture. I wonder if it's aimed at the photographer, her loose friend whom she knows will get her pick due to that shirt, or just a general "eff you" to society.

As were the days before belly-button piercings.

TXEric: Wow, that's some weapons-grade 'tard going on there.
Yes, I remember the skating rink, although we only cruised through looking for someone (not to pick up chicks, for sure, because they looked like... well, that).

Class of '74

Why are they not skating? Never saw one in the bunch.

We did the rinks for the chicks. They had great switch 'em deals so you could dance with every one.

I hooked up one night with a cutie. It turned out her mother was my history teacher. That one ended kind of quick.

#1 could have been me but a little skinnier.

naughtyrev: downstairs: vudukungfu: naughtyrev: My high school had a really nice outdoor area right off the cafeteria for smoking. Later on, they painted a line through the middle of it and said you had to stay on one side (furthest away from the doors and windows) to smoke, before banning it altogether.

We had a student strike, walk out - in order to get a smoking lounge.
We got it.
It was a great place to take a drink

I'm curious... around what year?

My school had banned it by the time I went there in the mid 90s, but my parents taught there for a long time, so I was always around as a kid. All through the 80s you could smoke there.

Same at my school; there was an area where "traditionally" the kids could go to smoke that had once been officially allowed; by the time I got there, school had revoked such privileges (once allowed only of the smoking age Seniors, I was told) , but the teachers (some who also smoked) were passive-aggressive about the whole thing and didn't much enforce it. Later school administration basically tightened the time gap between classes, so they could essentially bust the smoker kids for being constantly late for class etc.

Older yearbooks from early 70's at my school had all kinds of interesting pics in it that we poor Reagan-era attendees just marveled at.

True story,

Dr Dreidel: No one could escape the nipples.

Through the mid-90s. Anyone remember Must-See-Nipples-TV?

Offhand I swear I remember bra ads touting their ability to let the nips show through.

SVenus: redsquid: OK just heard back from Dad. He thinks a couple of the dudes are my uncles Philip and Bubba! He's going to send them the link and see who else they might recognize.

I was 15, and I was right farking there. Just not when this guy was photographing.

Okay, watched the guy's film http://vimeo.com/83459325 and got the info on where exactly it was, and I would have never gone there. I must have been at one built about the same time by similar folk, but not that particular one. Spooky. Sent this to older sis, she might have gone.
