The subtle middle finger is what makes this picture. I wonder if it's aimed at the photographer, her loose friend whom she knows will get her pick due to that shirt, or just a general "eff you" to society.

I just sent this link to my dad. These pics were shot the year I was born in Tampa. I hope he recognizes someone.
Yes, these kids look kind of goofy, but that's great. They have not been molded into fashion slaves by the media yet. These kids were far more concerned with 'doing' than 'being seen doing'. Kids these days should be so lucky.

edmo: To put it in perspective, this was an era when every high school male was worried he would soon be drafted and sent off to Vietnam to die. So they partied well.

Totally hardcore man...I mean a WHOLE pint of peppermint schnapps?! Crazy! I think a few were even smoking cigarettes, shirtless even.

Kids these days could learn a thing or two.

that move was well researched to be inclusive.
But most large white highschools had at least one token black back then.

naughtyrev: downstairs: vudukungfu: Next pic, Ah yes, children smoked back then, I do remember that. I did, too.

Yep. When I started high school in 1990, they had a smoking lounge. For students. And I remember walking by the teachers lounge and it reeking of cigarettes. And this was a very well-to-do high school.

My high school had a really nice outdoor area right off the cafeteria for smoking. Later on, they painted a line through the middle of it and said you had to stay on one side (furthest away from the doors and windows) to smoke, before banning it altogether.

My school had a smokers court in the middle but they stopped that the year I started in 89.

The young punks I work with were laughing at those pics they said the first one was of me and I had to point out that I was born in 74. Then the old jokes came out. Now they will learn not to fark with the guy that puts in their time to payroll.

Well, since there's no rollerskates actually in the article... Let me fix it a bit.

First, This video has skates, derby girls, and booty shorts.

And two photos of Suzy Hotrod from the legendary Gotham Girls Roller Derby who happen to be the current D1 WFTDA Champions.

Late 80s the roller rink was where my parents would abandon me and my sisters for a few hours so they could have their alone time. We'd be left there with enough money for skate rentals and food. We'd usually eat something cheap so we could save some of the money and use it on the arcade games in between doing the rounds on the rink.

Come to think of it, a skating rink near my home just got renovated and is having a soft opening, supposedly it's in its full 70s glory.

Where are the blacks? you say?
Colored film didn't come out until the late 70's I think.

/on a serious note - I'm sure the two groups had their own preferences on what to do on a Saturday night. For example, how many blacks do you see at a beach?

Through the mid-90s. Anyone remember Must-See-Nipples-TV? Every third episode of Friends? Hell, I caught an episode of Frasier the other day, where Felicity Huffman (pre-Sportsnight) is not-subtly smuggling 00 shot in her bra.

TFA headlines this as Tampa, but this was obviously a country western place.

He's described this as "southern Hillsborough County" which can be a world away from Tampa (the city). In one photo, there is what looks like a Future Farmers of America jacket from Hillsborough. My guess is that this was down in Brandon or Riverview, which are quite a bit more rural.

The recent past we can laugh at.

The distant past makes us sigh.

It's the middle past that gives us the willies. Things are waaaay too different there.

Ah, for the good ol' 70s. Young boys were so much easier to pick up back then before all this 'Stranger Danger' sh*t got started.

2014-02-07 06:00:06 PM
The 70's were great. I didn't patronize skating rinks, but had a blast, and the girls were absolutely hot - halter tops, hip huggers, short shorts, and the drugs were still fantastic and readily available. Cops would typically just confiscate or dump if you were careless enough to get caught, liquor stores didn't ID, music up until disco hit was great....good, good times.

And I am so glad my daughters are growing up now instead of then.

2014-02-07 06:10:05 PM
The 60s didn't hit middle america until it was in the Sear's catalog which was in the 70s. Sure there was that one guy/gal who ran off to find themselves but the hair, the bell bottoms, paisley, etc wasn't on the menu for the masses.

Yes, I remember the skating rink, although we only cruised through looking for someone (not to pick up chicks, for sure, because they looked like... well, that).

Class of '74

Why are they not skating? Never saw one in the bunch.

We did the rinks for the chicks. They had great switch 'em deals so you could dance with every one.

I hooked up one night with a cutie. It turned out her mother was my history teacher. That one ended kind of quick.

#1 could have been me but a little skinnier.
