(CNN)   Joe Biden compares New York's LaGuardia Airport to a Third-World country. He's not wrong, of course, but what does that make Logan Airport? The First Circle of Hell?   (politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com ) divider line

Funny story about my only trip through Logan:

Got the airport like 4 hours early and just sat in one of the several airport bars. After an hour or so, some guy at the bar in a Pats jersey with some 'wicked bad' southie mouth starts yammering. Nice guy really. But he got drunk and ended up asking me in a very hushed voice,

"ay cmere... ay, ay... you seem like a smaht guy. tell me, i always wanted ta know... how do tides werk?"

Anyways, I tried explaining the world he lived in but he must have been up to his ears in booze cause he didnt understand for shiat. I recommended Wikipedia, and I hope that he found whatever it was he was looking for.

GuyFawkes: Hilarity_N_Sues: poot_rootbeer: Compared to EWR and JFK, yes, LGA is a decrept little dump of an airport.  But I've been in plenty of regional airports that wish they could have the style and amenities of LaGuardia.

What he said, And having just moved to Astoria in the last year, there is much to be said for having a major airport literally within walking distance should one choose to walk.

LGA definitely could use a sprucing up though.

Welcome to the neighborhood!  We love it here!

Another one in the neighborhood. Glad to have LGA so close. 30 minutes door to door. I have no problem with LGA. I don't use baggage claim, vendors, food court or any of that. It might be a walk to the gate but I know that and ready for it. In and out.

Robo Beat:I'd probably have to say that MSP is my preferred airport to fly through when I'm going to the States, because while the terminals are very wpread out, their customs and passport control is the only one in the US I've yet experienced that seemed worthy of a first-world nation.  I understand DTW isn't bad, but I've not yet had reason to fly through Detroit.

I don't fly international but my bosses do a lot. They're very picky and will do everything they can to have their international connections go through MSP or DTW. They'll almost go to the point of postponing a trip if the connection is through JFK, LGA or EWR.

The Stealth Hippopotamus: You've never been to ATL

I love that airport. It's one of my faves. Then again, when you have LGA and JFK as choices, lots of things look good.

For real crap, LAX is the King of Kings.

I  concur. For some reason, it always seems that 90% of the other travelers have not flown in 10 years and have no clue.

The only good thing about LAX is there's almost never a weather delay.

LaGuardia airport suffers from middle child syndrome.  It's the forgotten airport stuck in between two heavy hitters at Newark and JFK.  JFK gets a ton of international travel and Newark gets all kinds of traffic.  Corporate flyers seem to like Teterboro better so that leaves LGA as just a "me too" airport with nothing unique to offer.

Sounds like more FU older brother. I don't see what Boston had to do with any of that.

yeah, sorry your brother is a douche but I am hard pressed to believe every hotel out near 128 or on the north or south shores were all booked

LGA used to be far worse, believe it or not.

I'd like to nominate Madrid-Barajas as one of the worst airports in the world. It has spectacularly beautiful modern architecture, but it doesn't work as an airport.
In terminal 4, all the gates are in a straight line, they aren't assigned until shortly before the flight, and they tend to change at the last minute.
There's no way to got from Terminal 4 (domestic) to 4S (international) without revisiting the security barrier.
The only redeeming feature is that it's half empty.

SeedFreak: I've been to LaGuardia, it's a short drive from here. It's a freakin hell hole.

Fly Jet Blue to and from LaGuardia ain't too bad.  Every other airline ....Fuuuuuuuuuuuu!

/the delays from a small rain shower notwithstanding.

mbillips: LaGuardia has that hideous design flaw that you find in a lot of airports, which is if you mistakenly get let off at the wrong terminal, you're screwed. One thing Atlanta has going for it, there's only one place for ground transportation to take you (OK, two now that they have an international-only terminal), and the underground train between terminals is fast and efficient. You may have a bit of a hike if you're at Gate 3 or 36, but hey, exercise is good for you.

Worse airport design in terms of connecting to another flight, hands down, is Charles De Gaulle. French architect: "We must make it beautiful, with a womanly profile, so there is no room for internal passenger flow. Just have buses drive around the outside."

I have so much hate for that airport.  When I was there I was also disappointed they did away w/ the Pierre Henry designed bell tone for the announcements.

You can't know how broken down and  pathetic the decades old American airports are until you visit some like Incheon in Korean.   Is there such a thing as an airport with free showers in the "greatest country in the world" ?  Ha!

ATL is great, LAX has horrible food, that ghetto-assed tunnel between the two terminals that makes no sense, escalators that were broken on both the outbound and inbound legs of my journey...that's 2 weeks apart, people sleeping in random hallways, a byzantine shuttle system, and terminals 5&6 (or whichever have the tunnels connecting them) would be improved with graffiti sprayed on them. I've been through there 3 times and each time was worse than the last.

The Stealth Hippopotamus: You've never been to ATL

For being the busiest airport in the world for a little while now, it's fantastic.  Security is faster than anywhere else I've flown into since 9/11 and it's paper-free, and my luggage beats me to the conveyor belt every time. (Might have something to do with the 2 mile walk though).

My standard for "modern" is pretty basic... do you support E-Boarding passes, and are there USB chargers near your waiting area seats.  Sadly, very few meet this criteria (I'm looking at  you San Francisco)

Oh, and the ability to find a good local microbrew..
