Mikey1969: If you're a close friend, odds are I shared a good deal of that history with you. In that case: I don't want to see it. I was there. I don't even want to watch my Facebook Look Back video. Why should I have to see yours?

Ummm, sharing shiat is the POINT of FB, and it's a goddam black whole where shared stuff goes to die. I have a relatively inactive FB feed, and I can't even go back and find something 24 hours after someone posts it. If it's cool or funny, I usually have to save or forward the image to my wife, because she'll never farking see it. Not only that, it's showing stuff that people posted as long as 10 years ago, not just the last 10 posts they made. Maybe you've got an eidetic memory, but not everybody does. If someone posts this, I get to look at it and say, 'God, I remember that pic, that was 4 years ago', or 'Wow, I never saw a pic of the kids so young.'... What ever it is, unless you LIVE for FB, you're either gonna see stuff you'd forgotten about or stuff from before you were friends with the person, or before you joined FB.

Personally, I think it's a cool little feature. Like it or not though, it's YOUR choice if you click on it, and the 2 1/2" of screen space it takes up isn't much, and is a million times better than "Sponsored Links".

Of course, I'm not some "blogger", so I don't get paid to whine about features offered by free web services,

THIS. I'm enjoying them. It's bringing up some nice memories.

I have maybe 5 pictures of my kid on Facebook.  Out of all of the internet animals I use as profile pics, landscape photos I take, and just weird links I share, guess which 5 pictures my video used in rotation?  Yeah.  I'm not one of those moms with hundreds of kid pictures, but I damn sure look like one.

I feel for you. The first pic my look back video was of my 2 young girls, the last time I saw them, before my ex-wife disappeared with them.

I recently confirmed a friend request from a 65-year-old family friend who loves guns, dogs, reproductive rights and the Tea Party... and has a LOT of time on her hands at night.  Every day, 15 to 30 straight EEcards, Freedomworks links, inspirational messages... fortunately on the desktop version you can easily block shares from sources (like Freedomworks), without blocking your friends.  Yay!

Sorry you chose to have boring posts and photos on your Facebook page author, but not all of us did. I actually enjoyed mine. It showed life's ups and downs and put the emphasis on the three things that I cherish everyday.

To those of you had lookbacks that reminded you of loss, low points and hardships, I send positive vibes for each of you. I cannot understand what you're going through / went through.

:: shrugs :: This writer has a severe case of "not enough about me and I have no empathy for you". Facebook has its evils... but sometimes, if you don't reflect on where you've been, how can you think about where you're headed?

Happy Friday, celebrating our little ones 1st birthday today. She was a true surprise in that we didn't find out until I was 7 1/2 months along and she's healthy as an ox. Her sisters have welcomed and loved her more than we could have hoped.

Why does everything have to suck or be disliked?

My first reaction to it was "oh god another annoying marketing bit", but honestly, I watched a couple of my friends and thought it would be fun to see how it worked, then seeing that the program goes through your images and posts, kind of randomly it became even more interesting. I was curious to see it played out, because I would probably not have chosen much of it for no other reason than I might have forgotten that happened or something...

Even more curious was two elements and the way the sequences played out, so mine was cool. I found it interesting to see how my friends movies went, some sucked some were interesting and some were humorous. Unlike the "Author", I fount it interesting on a few levels.

Sequence 1 - Last year one of my dogs (2 year old siberian husky) jumped out fence chasing an animal and got hit by a commuter train, and he survived, I found him and he had a recovery that was followed. He was adopted from a rescue, volunteers came out that morning and helped us look (amazing people man). The rescue help us with his bills and stuff. THe FB movie actually put several key posts from that together, in sequence. The randomness of it, to put that together to me was impressive.

Sequence 2 - In the last bit where random images are shown a bit more quickly, were pictures from several vacations over the years where we took our other husky with us. We lost her last month (15, she had a good life!), and seeing those pictures, completely randomly like that not only hit me in the emotional response, but it fell together in such a nice way I was impressed as well.

I would not have chosen many, but seeing the ones that came up was probably a better experience.

It is free, you do not have to watch one unless you choose to, there is no work to put into it other than hitting the button to make it, share it and watch it. So what is the problem? I was at first cynical about it, but really it is a pretty innocent little ditty that should not be a problem, seriously.

//The exception though would be the heartbreaking things like jayelectricity mentioned, in that yes I can see where something like this would have a negative effect. I get that, but the overall angst over something so innocuous, and really not being forced upon the masses without their consent is ridiculous...    it like people have to have the "everything sucks" high school angst with anything anymore...

Look at how much that person doesn't care! They care so little they 3d'd a dick and photoshoped a whole image together and then got a bitstrip and brought into the file. Then they typed text telling us they don't give a f*ck. And boy do I believe it! Amazing. The lack of caring is astounding.

Article written by some twunt that has 2461 "Facebook Friends", a public profile, and never edits her newsfeed.

Me and my incredibly small circle of friends have mostly shared ours.  Everyone had a few heart pinching pics in theirs, from pets and fathers passing to cancer diagnoses.  But we're the ones who see them, so fark off, bitter article writing biatch.

(sorry jay and others.  One of my pets passed, but that's nothing compared to your and others' losses)

2014-02-07 11:45:26 AM
Actually, my friends aren't boring twats, so their slideshows were full of things that made me giggle when paired up with the sentimental music. The thumbs up at the end was the icing on the cake, especially for my fiancee's video, which ended with a post he made that was just an emoticon flipping the bird.

Facebook should be studied some day. It has gone from an exclusive club where all the young kids hung out to Grandma's Knitting Circle, the whole time trying to be something it's not. It wanted to be Twitter so bad, and now I think it wants to be MySpace.

We'll see animated gifs and auto start midis soon. This video crap is the harbinger of doom.

/Perhaps they're trying to be Vine as well?

Thread was going Sad.. Sad.. Sadder.. Really Depressing.. Then holy crap did that make me laugh. (I know the Paul Rudd joke)

one second. one.

I see that happen all the time here and it always amazes me how a thread can be going along with a bunch of posts, and then two farkers will post the exact same comment or image at the same time. Damn near a simulpost on this one.

It really is kind of uncanny isn't it? I've heard it referred to as the "Fark Hivemind" before. It is particularly interesting when the simulpost is only kind of related to the thread in question.
Now I wonder if there is a "Godwin's law" sort of thing where the more posts in a thread there are the likelihood of it happening climbs to 100%.

2014-02-07 01:04:52 PM
I was engaged (no longer), so I was curious as to how FB would navigate those waters.  It did know not to show pics with her, but my most liked post was 'scuba diving the Great Barrier Reef with my new fiancee'.  She was not tagged in the post so I think that's why it made the cut.

That was a punch to the gut.

Have new gf now, the end pics were all with her (even though Facebook doesn't officially know we're together...not doing that again).

Did not share the video.

2014-02-07 01:26:19 PM
It would be cool if Facebook would create a video of fake memories for anyone who creates an account today.  Hell, I'd even create an account if they did that.

So, did anyone point out to the idiot blogger that FB is posting the link to newsfeeds automatically?

I've only had one person actually actively share it. The rest are the automatic "Here's my Facebook movie. Find yours at <PENIS>".

Even more funny, a person who calls himself a "tech journalist" who doesn't know it either.

Words used to mean things, damnit.

That's the default text for when you click share and then accept it without typing your own description, I'm pretty sure you need to tell it to share the video.

I got married a few months ago, and I haven't been on FB that long, so mine sort of had a theme.  It's nice when life writes a love story for you (even if the soundtrack is crap).

Thank You Black Jesus!: Many condolences, jay. :(

FTDA: Coming from another Dad that's lost a child, you have my deepest sympathies.

Sorry for yours as well.

AppleChill: Sorry for your loss.  My wife passed away in 2012, and it showed me a lot of pictures of her.  Of course not a day goes by when I don't think of her.  This is normal, and things get better.

Cold_Sassy: Jaylectricity, I am sorry for your loss. However pretending it never happened is not "unhealthy" it's a coping mechanism to help you through life until you are ready to come to terms with this most unfortunate incident. You'll be ready when you're ready - don't worry over it; time will help you heal.

Never mind the constant stream of flyers and samples from Similac, Babys r Us and so on.

tommyl66: I was going to comment on how mine was basically the same thing until I got to the end of your post. I can't even imagine, and I can't imagine dealing with it in any other way than to try and forget. Here's to hoping each day gets a little better for you on your journey.

katerbug72: Sorry for your loss

milkyshirt: That's sad. I'm sorry you went through that. I hope you and your wife heal.

GBB: Not to be a distasteful motherfarker, but when you say 8 months, are you meaning it was 8 months old, or -1?

No problem, it was a few weeks before the due date (April 1st of all days) when she stopped moving around in there. So...I won't type it, but you can guess what that entailed.

Madduck: I feel for you. The first pic my look back video was of my 2 young girls, the last time I saw them, before my ex-wife disappeared with them.
