I believe this because both of the sources here (TMZ and the Biebs) are completely trustworthy, and have never manufactured a story, lied to us, or been in trouble of their own.

selena gomez is not an alcoholic.  she might drink alot.  she might drink to excess alot.  she might drink until she passes out and vomits.

she is 21 years old, rich, famous and stupid.  but it just isn't likely that she is an ALCOHOLIC.

and goddammit, alcoholism is not a disease.  it is an addiction.

"
Alcoholism, also known as alcohol dependence, is a disease that includes these symptoms according to the NIAAA:
· craving - a strong need, or compulsion to drink
· loss of control - the inability to control one's drinking on any given occasion
· physical dependence - withdrawal symptoms such as nausea, sweating, shakiness and anxiety occur when alcohol use is stopped after a period of heavy drinking
· tolerance - the need to drink greater amounts of alcohol in order to 'get high'"

guys, that right there is addiction.  not disease.

Anything over I think 5 drinks in 1 sitting is considered an alcoholic.  Binge drinking is, medically speaking, alcoholism.

Pretty common tactic here: the girl dumps the boy, or never gives him a second look, and he trashes her to anyone who will listen to make himself look/feel better. It also works if you reverse the genders.

The only unusual thing here is that most people grow out of this behavior after high school.

First, your login is funny here. Second, those "alcoholism tests" are for the most part bullshiat. There was a time (college) when I failed the thing spectacularly. By that test, I was a screaming, raging alcoholic. One step away from a Night Train gutter drunk. However, I graduated, got a job, and grew the fark up. Now I might have a glass of wine with dinner once or twice a week, but it's rare that I have a second drink. So, not an alcoholic by anyone's definition.

So what happened? What is my miracle cure for addiction, and why have I not made my fortune off of it? Maybe, just maybe, I was not an alcoholic, but drank a lot because it was fun. And when I was no longer in a situation where it was fun, I didn't do it anymore.

no, it isn't.  i used to binge drink quite often in high school and the later in the navy.

I am 41 now.  not an alcoholic.  don't even really drink anymore.

just because you drink alot, you are NOT an alcoholic.

you need to have the addiction to be one.  you must CRAVE the shiat like a junkie wants smack.

Yeah, that's basically the point I was making.

I was once a young college student. I went to parties, I joined a fraternity, I drank a lot.
I grew up, joined the workforce, supported myself, went out with friends and drank a lot. (restaurant biz. drink by default)
I got older, got married, started a family.  I don't drink too much these days. I've got a small fridge full of beer but I haven't had one for over a week.  I've got a wine fridge full of wine. Last time I had some was with friends over the holidays. (Broke out a '98 Harrison Estate Reserve Cab and an '02 Peter Michael 'Les Pavots' but that's another thread)
I'm not an alcoholic.

Just because you're functioning doesn't mean you're not an alcoholic. If you feel like you *need* even just one drink a day, you're probably an alcoholic.

Odd that you two would say something like that where folks are saying that they rarely drink anymore. Pretty sure no one said they drink daily yet aren't an alcoholic.

I'm in the same boat. I drank like a fish when I was in my 20s and still single with no responsibilities in the military. I got drunk to the point of falling down regularly on the weekends and often had a few after work during the week. Now that I've got a kid to care for, I rarely drink and when I do it's very rare for me to have more than 1-2 drinks. Not everyone that drinks a lot is an alcoholic that needs therapy and rehab to stop drinking.

2014-02-07 10:57:28 AM
I drink as much as I can whenever I can. The only problem I have is that it takes far far too much to be effective now.

Im thinking of alcohol right now and wishing I never drank all that vodka the other day, because then I would still have some to drink right now.

I am not however addicted.

Boy am I glad that the tea-totes are around reminding everyone of their crusade against alcohol and proper addiction treatment.

Remember, even though abstinence only programs have shown that they are no more effective than doing NOTHING, they are the only way to treat addictions, again, remembering they don't work.

Hmm, a lot of denying possibilities in this thread. Maybe this definition helps:

"Alcoholism is called a progressive disease, meaning that over time the symptoms and effects of drinking alcohol become more intense and severe. The symptoms in the early stages differ from those during later stages as the disease progresses from binge drinking to alcohol abuse to alcohol dependence."

2014-02-07 11:11:39 AM
I happen to be married to an actual "alcoholic".

She's been one since she was a teenager. She did rehabs as a teen (at her parents insistence), she hit the wall with it around 22. She's had relapses but has nearly two years complete sobriety under her belt. She's gone stretches that have lasted years and still had relapses.

The idea that someone can't be an alcoholic at the tender age of 21 is preposterous.

One of the more notable characteristics of an alcoholic is the inability to stop once they start. Their tolerance goes up rapidly, they drink every day, they binge drink, they drink specifically to get drunk and won't stop until they pass out or the booze runs out and there's no one there to get them anymore. I have taken my wife to emergency rooms before because when she's finally had enough, or there is no more, she's had seizures.

The keyboard experts on alcoholism here are amusing but it would appear you are either just being smart asses or you honestly don't know a lot about the anatomy of alcoholism.

I'm talking about the difference between someone having an occasional casual drink and getting totally smashed being the goal when you start. Some people are content to have a beer, a cocktail or glass of wine and stop there.

Not all alcoholics are binge drinkers, either. I knew a guy who just always had one going from the time he got up until he went to bed at night. He seemed to exist in that netherworld between sober and drunk, just sort of perpetually tipsy. He'd mix cheap whiskey with soda and sip off of it all day long. He'd put away a fifth in a day easy and not even appear that obviously drunk.
