You mean to tell me that laws don't have any effect on people who don't follow laws?  Wow, who would have guessed?

2014-02-07 08:29:55 AM
No they weren't, but then I'm not a stupid coward who has to strap on a gun before I can leave my house. Like subby.

2014-02-07 08:31:00 AM
Wow, that article is absolutely dripping with anti-gun editorializing and fear-mongering.

2014-02-07 08:31:00 AM
Where's it say that anyone is shocked?

He was charged with risk of injury to a minor, illegal possession of an assault weapon and three counts of illegal possession of a high-capacity magazine - a charge stemming from new gun legislation that resulted from the school massacre in Newtown.

Looks like things are working out to me. More charges for this gun owner.

2014-02-07 08:32:52 AM
Then it's a good thing that Newtown never actually happened.

2014-02-07 08:33:18 AM
The idea is for law abiding citizens to comply with laws intended to keep guns in the hands of law abiding citizens.  The net effect being fewer untraceable guns in circulation for non-law abiding citizens to get their hands on.

2014-02-07 08:33:21 AM
Don't worry, these laws created a whole bunch of felons overnight. Gotta keep that prison industry afloat.

2014-02-07 08:34:21 AM
There is actually a Supreme Court case which states you can't charge convicted felons for failing to register their weapons, if your state or city has a firearms registry law.  It violates their 5th Amendment Rights, by requiring them to self incriminate.

2014-02-07 08:34:24 AM
Doesn't appear failing to register is one of the charges.

I thought the idea was to ban rifles with certain cosmetic features and magazines over a completely arbitrary size that is standard capacity from the manufacturer.

Really? I'd say that the 1.5 million people currently sitting in federal and state prisons might disagree with you on that point.

In fact, I think the guy in the article who is facing three additional felony charges thanks to the new laws and will spend more time in prison as a result would probably have something to say about your incredibly dumb statement.

You should totally represent this guy in court.

As for this law, there has been massive noncompliance:
http://www.ctnewsjunkie.com/archives/entry/police_register_about_5000 0 _assault_rifles

They've registered about 50k "assault rifles" which is a tiny fraction of what actually exists. Dems are having a huge infight on whether to extend the deadline but it's unlikely to make a huge difference. Congrats CT, you've made criminals out of thousands of law abiding citizens. I wonder how many Ruby Ridges they're going to get out of this.

Where in the constitution does it say I have to carry around a loaded weapon?

So, is subby saying that laws don't work so we should just get rid of them?  Or, that it is too easy for felons to get weapons in the first place?  Or that people who don't register their weapons are obviously up to no good an we should lock them up under the jail?

I think they should give the guy's 7 year old to him. He sounds pretty responsible. Just like the gun owner in the article.

No, the idea is to pass knee-jerk laws that will have no positive effect so that people can feel good that they Did Something™

So you are saying that laws that forbid felons to arm themselves are superfluous? We should strike them from the books?
You sure that's a good idea?

Furthermore, being a felon meant he wasn't legally allowed to own those guns anyway, ban or no.

In case you haven't noticed, he's too cowardly to say anything that can be challenged directly, so he just makes silly, off-handed remarks about nothing so he doesn't have to actually get drawn into a debate he knows he'll certainly lose.

I suppose - what does that have to do with what we are talking about here today? Or do you think felons should have guns? And if you do, does that include big, black, mean felons that have "get whitey" tattooed on their knuckles?

My ire was directed at the awb ban. Restricting felons from firearm ownership is a reasonable thing. For the sake of controversy, I would argue that nonviolent felons who have repaid their debt to society should have their gun rights restored (I also think removing voting rights from all felons after they've served their time is also dumb).

Drunk driving kills people to.  Your choice, do we ban all alcoholic beverages or all motor vehicles?  Obviously that is the only way to address this situation.  There are millions of responsible gun owners in the U.S. and punishing them for the actions of the few is a rather draconian solution.

Ok, but it's still bad public policy and ill-crafted legislation.

You need to analysis your intent and craft legislation that accomplishes your intent without affecting a bunch of other people and shiat.

If your intent is to keep felons in jail longer for weapons, then you increase the sentencing for felons found with guns.  You don't ban the standard magazine size for carbines.

Seriously, non-law enforcement Gun toters are dickbags.

People who get their panties in a bunch over them are equally dickbaggish.

Does anyone here arguing so vehemently over this stale topic have any first hand experience with how a firearm helped or hurt them in some significant way??

2014-02-07 08:59:09 AM
What a moron, good.

That being said, new gun laws are retarded. Had to drive through New York recently. Had to get my M1A through the state. Had to lock it in a case, separate from ammo, where I could not access it easily. Then I had to have the magazines mailed to myself from VT.

Stupid.

We should just cal it gun addiction, label it a disease, then the Dems will support us 100%, give us free, smaller guns to keep us hooked.
