You don't have to pay dead guys much

2014-02-07 09:50:26 AM
It is almost like getting your music exposed to 100's of millions of people who might not have heard your music and might realize they like (and buy it) it is worth more than whatever the NFL would pay.

2014-02-07 09:50:41 AM
He was better than all three combined, so yeah.

2014-02-07 09:52:07 AM
He's a very talented musician. And the crew of Black Dudes he sings with? Amazing. They killed it on SNL

Sounds like those other folks need a better contract negotiator.

Yeah, pretty much this. Wasn't a fan before. Now I am.

Nope.
They did it for the nookie. the nookie.

Worth every penny.  One of the best half time shows in recent memory. And I do not consider myself a fan of Bruno mars (not my type of music).  But he seriously did a great job.

This.

Best since Prince, who should never have agreed to do that stupid New Girl episode after the game.

Yeah, it was a good show, except for the RHCP appearance. Mars' music is OK, nothing too interesting to me, but not offensive. He was a real safe bet for the halftime show - no controversy, no overinflated expectation (remember The Who show), and no wardrobe malfunction opportunities. He did show off some damn good drum chops at the start, but there was really no musical reason for that except to showboat - if he played drums during the set it would have made more sense, but came off to me just as non-sequitor as if he started out by juggling or doing Nixon impersonations.

Now we all know the RHCP faked the instrumental aspect of their performance, so I'll assume Mars' band did as well - although the guitars were wireless and the drums were miked, I saw no microphones for the brass section despite the great section work. I'm sure he can pull it off live, but there really shouldn't be any faking. It doesn't really add anything to the performance to see a guitarist trying to sync up visually to a recorded solo, so why do it? All it does is piss off people when they find out the truth. Of course, the sound guys are happy since they only have to deal with pre-recorded tracks for the band and only live vocals, but it's still a sham to the audience.

It could also be the NFL & the Superb Owl micromanagement shiat. If the NFL makes performers fake the anthem, why wouldn't they make RHCP fake out their stuff so they don't do something the NFL doesn't like?

Yeah. His album sales have only jumped 164% since his performance.

I really did not like him that much before the Super Bowl. After seeing him perform, I still don't really like him that much.

Still, there have been much worse halftime shows.

I saw mics on a trumpet and the tenor sax. Then I stopped looking.

So how did Bruno Mars fair?

*rapid left eye twitch*

Fairly well, from all indications.

/One of the better SBHT shows in recent memory.

2014-02-07 10:55:28 AM
They talk percentage increases in the article, but don't get into the actual dollar value to the performers.  Which actually would be interesting to see.

2014-02-07 10:55:48 AM
Not my cup of tea but I said after seeing him on SNL, 'wow, this young pop star is quite a bit more talented than the regular crop of glorified backup dancers that can hardly sing.'

2014-02-07 11:04:17 AM
As a performing musician for many decades, I can only wonder what it's like to play the biggest venue on the planet.  Oh well, it is to dream.  At this point I'd be happy if I could get somebody else to haul my gear up to the bandstand and set it up for me.  But even that's unlikely!

BTW, for any farkers in Savannah we're playing Rachel's 1190 Saturday nite.

2014-02-07 11:06:41 AM
I could tell RHCP were fake. The *real* RHCP wear socks when they perform, not spandex bike shorts.

Its almost like money is worth less every year and prices go up. Someoneshould check into it.

I didn't watch the superbore (although I do own a television set).

The Stealth Hippopotamus: And was worth it

This.

Bruno Mars was the best performance in over a decade. Was actually on key, music was actually mixed well, and he performed his heart out.

2014-02-07 11:27:29 AM
Even if they did get paid, they'd still never cost the network as much as Janet Jackson's nipple did.

Based on the relative quality of their performances, he was underpaid.

Ima let you finish, but Beyonce's halftime show was the best halftime show of all time!

I'm not a Bruno Mars fan, but he knocked that one out of the park.  Best half-time show in recent history.

I liked it because he didn't try to be THE BIGGEST BLOWOUT HALFTIME EXTRAVAGANZA OF ALL TIME!!! with 10000 half naked dancing extras in cheezy costumes on ridiculous sets.

He sang his songs and sang them well, and he looked like he was thrilled and honored to be performing there. He looked like he was having fun. It was a great show.

As a drummer, I tensed up just watching the solo opening. I would have shiat myself.

I normally despise that kind of high-concept pop - but I was able to sit through it without feeling compelled to leave the room - pretty impressive.

2014-02-07 12:17:56 PM
Far rather that money go to young, talented performers with scads of ideas ahead of them then old washed-up has beens who haven't produced a song worth a good shiat for years.

2014-02-07 12:31:14 PM
I don't care for Bruno Mars or over played pop music in general, but that was a good halftime show.

Anthony Kiedis and Flea are both 51. Scrotums that old would need support hose.

It wasn't bad, but it all just seemed like a James Brown impersonation.

I can never forgive Bruno Mars for "Grenade". "I would DIIIIIEE for you, but you won't do the SAAAAAME!!!" Cry more, emo kid. I also hated that song where he literally sings "I wanna be a billionaire so freaking bad!" Ugh, UGH I say. But apparently I'm the only one who's irritated by those songs judging by how much everyone loves him, so that's reason #347546 for me to kill myself.

Spare yourself. Taste is always in the hands/eyes/minds of the minority. What was on display at the Superb Owl was pablum, mental McDonald's Happy Meals. Every day you have the chance, thank your lucky stars you're better than that.
