The inappropriately addressed letter is the second to make news since last month.

In January, a Chicago couple who lost their 17-year-old daughter in a car crash received a piece of mail from OfficeMax addressed to Mike Seay, "Daughter Killed in Car Crash."

OfficeMax, which is based in Naperville, Ill., blamed a "third-party mailing list provider" for the insensitive mix-up.

I think their manual data entry people are Farking while inputting.

No, it's like when your phone number is unlisted, except this time for a nominal fee your name doesn't go in the book of Girls Who Put Out* that gets delivered around this time every year.

And this is why you need to sanitize the inputs for the name fields. Or make it so that only certain people are able to correct them. I know that when I worked for Charter One many moons ago, those fields were locked. Sure, it defeats the purpose if the prankster (or asshole, in this case)  is one of the higher-ups, but being forced to submit something like that for approval and/or having a software flag for certain word combinations would have prevented this in the first place.

That's what I thought. Our postal codes here cover fairly small areas, sometimes just one building. I don't like giving out my postal code to all and sundry, particularly businesses who may sell on the address list.

In rural areas where the population is scanty, the area may be larger but the population might be smaller so everybody in the postal code may know each other or at least know of each other. My family knows a lot of people up to a couple of hundred miles away through business, family and friendships. They should have blacked out at least part of the postal code for greater privacy.

The world is full of trolls and most of them just saw this poor woman's address on Fark.com.

That was a big issue at the ISP call center where I briefly worked at several years ago. The middle name field didn't appear on customer statements so the technicians or account services employees would type in comments describing the customer's demeanor. I also knew of at least one tech who kept notepad open and would record the names and addresses of truly dickish customers and sign them up for free trial subscriptions to embarrassing magazines.

I'm truly grateful I was among those who was laid-off when the company down-sized. Yes, it resulted in me being unemployed for fifteen months during the height of the economic crisis, but it also saved me from any further potentially illegal activities that upper management was doing.

I guess I was lucky... Charter One had a comments field on the accounts that did not print out. It would appear on the main account screen and was obviously designed to jot down anecdotes and the like. Even though we could technically type anything that we wanted to, they audited those files pretty often and I am sure that there are a few people who lost their jobs over vulgar commentary. Or, forced to take training.

Journalism is failing anymore.   The key question is NOT how did this happen?  The key question is...Is Lisa McIntire a slut?  That was not addressed anywhere in the article.  I think everyone can agree that putting one's sexual preferences in an address is not appropriate, yet the article stayed completely on that point.

I still feel it's not appropriate on an envelope or throughout a mail whether or not Lisa McIntire allowed the guys at the bar to run a train on her this weekend.  I am however interested in finding out, if she did, and at which bar?   Also is she only there on Saturdays?

I always do this.... problem is done it so many times forget which fake name us from where.

Post Office lady probably wonders why so many people with strange names live in one small house.

About a decade or so ago... the office joined together to send as many "internet freebies" asas we could to one of our coworkers as a joke. Each of us taking a different mispelling of his name. Wally. Someone picked Wooly and sent off for a free copy of book of Mormon not knowing that it would be hand delivered.

Wally had a surprise one day when he opened his door andheard "Hello, are you Wooly, wmy name is eldar xxxxx we have brought you your book of Mormonyou requested."

He actually got some pretty neat stuff from our free-crap bombardment.

Mugs, t shirts.

He was less impressed with the panties sent to Walsey.

That's actually more information than the street address. It designates a specific apartment inside a building, for example.

Well, sometimes. Most of the time, it designates a range of addresses on a street, and in the case of apartment/business complexes, a range of apartments/suites/whatever. Apartments sometimes even get three: one for the street address, another for the complex, and a third for the range of mailboxes that apartment is part of.  It's fairly rare that a Z+4 can be traced back to a single specific location, though. Not impossible, just rare.

All that said, though, it's still not bright to post it, since you're narrowing your location down to a handful of addresses.

To this day it would not surprise me if he is still getting mail there.

If you want to try an interesting experiment, next time you sign up for something, misspell your name in a distinctive way.  Then watch as all the junk mail rolls in with that same misspelling.

I deliberately mispelled my street name for the phone book.
I can tell who got my address from there.

I make use of the "Address Line 2" field on forms for this sort of tracking purpose.

I regularly get all sorts of crap addressed to

My Name
STEVE JOBS IS A DILDO
123 My Street
Mytown, MY 00000

It took me LESS than 3 minutes to find the exact address. Posting that zip+4  (or even the town) was REALLY stuuuuuuuuuupid.
Some people need the "internets" thing 'splained to them.

So much facepalm.

Lisa is not a slut, she is just very outgoing and makes friends easily.

Cheron: aevorea: I also knew of at least one tech who kept notepad open and would record the names and addresses of truly dickish customers and sign them up for free trial subscriptions to embarrassing magazines.

I've has to renew a few times but I'm still getting those subscriptions.  Sometimes they are delivered to the neighbors house but I tell them that I work with polymers and that is why I read so many publications about latex

we did something like that to a college friend. I used to print junkmail in college and we had a seed file that was inserted on every job we ran. We put his name on the seed file and he got bags of mail from then on. We took it off after about 5 months. But it was fun going to his place and seeing all the bags and bins of mail.

But her middle name is the same as my Ex girlfriend.....weird

I was really hoping the correcting themselves and instead sending it to "Lisa Is Not A Slut McIntire" was also true, but alas.

Diogenes: The inappropriately addressed letter is the second to make news since last month.

You'd probably drink a lot on the job if you had that job too!

InterruptingQuirk: I used to have a .flv which showcased the kind of data mining world we are entering in to.

'Data Mining' huh?

Guy called up for a pizza to be delivered.

I may have seen this .flv...

Had additional charges added based on health report, etc.

Your post ended like this thread.

vudukungfu: I'm confuesed. Is Lisa McIntyre a slut or is Lisa McIntyre not a slut?

We'll need to know if she used her credit card to pay for her birth control pills.  Yes = SLUT.

Couldn't remember the rest. You could see the order takers screen, it was mostly blue, like you had the POV of the person taking the order and you could hear both persons talking.

I was hoping somebody had a name and/or a Youtube link.

*FP* Apparently I'm too subtle.  IMHO, this is a "Lisa is a Slut Machine" thread, that is clearly not delivering.

I get a fair amount of junk mail addressed to Mr. Nathan P. Hole - which could be my actual name if I write sloppy and you squint just right as you try to decipher it.

As much as I hate to say this, bro, I think that 3rd one is coming down.

Kind of looks like an ex GF of mine, though.

Pangit: FTFA: "Hi  . My mom opened this credit card offer addressed to "Lisa Is A Slut McIntire."

If your mom is opening mail on your behalf for you, especially financial services mails, you have a bigger problem than being a slut.

Hey, her mom just saw the "Slut" part and assumed it was for her!

I also read it as Slut Machine.

Hm.

Oh cry harder.  If I got that credit card offer I would accept it so that I could have a credit card with "is a slut" as my middle name.

Stephen_Falken: She actually does look kinda slutty, like your standard sportf*cking chick from 10 years ago.
This also aligns with the timeframe in TFA. Hmmm.

Wait... Did sport-farking go out of style?

Ha!

To be fair, that lisa WAS a slut.

Me too, even double checked and it still looked like machine, but I saw it on the triple check and now it keeps looking like McIntire, the way it should and I have no idea how I saw it wrong before.

I'm fortunate enough to run my own mail server, so I end up doing something similar all the time.  Sam's Club needs an email address?  I give them "samsclub@[mydomain].com".  Underneath it's a wildcard address, so I don't actually have to set up all those accounts but still makes it trivially easy to find out who's selling my info.
