Hard to say -- if the Soviets had an easy (well, easier) time of it in Afghanistan, maybe there wouldn't have been the social impetus to bring about the fall of the USSR.

I wish America had a badass leader like Putin!  Putin's a real man's man.  He doesn't let a bunch of feminazis like Pussy Riot push around his country even though the lamestream MSM media loves them so much for their "music".  He doesn't let the gays just strut and flaunt their gayness in public.

He's a true friend of the church.

When was the last time you even saw 0bummer in a church?  He's also a master of military tactics and strategy.  He looks so awesome flying a chopper.  Not like Michael "The Greek" Dukakis in a tank.

I just wish we had a President like The Gipper back in office.  Him and Putin could go on long horseback rides together.  Just a couple of guys riding across the open range into the sunset.

wait for the real outrage - last night on the opening graphic for prime time, they had a sweeping shot of the mountains with all the countries flags on them.  you know where Canada (and I believe I saw S. Korea there as well) had their flag?  ABOVE the US flag.

oh, I hope Rush has his oxy heart pills ready to go.

Nice list.. I also can't recommend enough a proper VPN for any cord cutters.. CBC's coverage of the Olympics on the web is superior to anyone elses....

I recommend this one.. Sign up, pay your month, cancel the reoccurring payment (so it only lasts 1 month).. Install their little app, sign in with the emailed credentials and enjoy HD 1500 hours of coverage. They also have an Android app so you can use the CBC/BBC apps.

The Soviet Union, as you know, has agreements with Afghanistan and sent in military aid at request of the Afghanistan government. We do not see that at all as an invasion. But, as simply, honoring our commitment. And I'd like to make that absolutely clear.

Isn't this basically what the United States did? Afghanistan has always be not a united nation, but a confederation of provinces, much like the native American nations. Along comes the US who sets up a puppet government, with that complete fark-up Cheney himself choosing Karzai as president. Then when he and his government turned out to be exceedingly corrupt and the rest of the provinces said "whoa, let's find us a better deal", Obama ups the ante and expands the war. We are honoring our commitment to Afghanistan, don't 'cha know.

Yeah, I can see why the government dick sucking US media would want to silence this guy.
Putin is a terrorist hurr derp! That's the ticket!

No -- I don't think the timing even works for that. But the country might have been more willing to criticize the government because of the lives and economic resources consumed by the war.

It probably greatly added to their resources being stretched. I just looked up the cost for Operation Cyclone, and the billions that we spent should have been a good reason for the U.S. citizenry to criticize our own government, had we known about it. I imagine the Soviets probably got hurt a lot more financially than we did in that scuffle.

I'm not sure that NBC could have ignored that stuff. I'm hoping it was more of a 'let's get this out of the way before the onslaught begins' so we can focus on the games.

I was more upset at the jumping back and forth between events. I'd get into the snowboard stuff and then, bam, let's send you back to ice skating.

Two notes from the BBC:

1- the Parade of Nations will be in the order of the Russian alphabet, with the traditional exceptions for Greece and the host nation

2- Quoting the BBC directly:
Organisers have been keen to make the athletes parade a livelier affair compared to previous games, so they have created a special floor within the Olympic Stadium with an image of the globe projected onto it.

Every time a country is announced, the globe will spin to that country. A ramp will then appear in the centre of the country, with athletes marching into the £500m Fisht Stadium.
