In conservatives' minds, not getting what you want the second you demand it is oppression, and telling the truth about a person is character assassination.

Argghhh, the comments.

Now I must spend the rest of the day trying to scoop up the brains that ran out my nose and somehow funnel them back into my head.

Well, to be fair it's kind of imitative.  That sort of thing was pioneered by the right wing news organizations like Fox.

He's stealing their shtick and he's trivializing it by using it for comedy instead of reputable journalism the way Fox does.

"In one case, fragments from several unrelated sentences were pieced together to form what seemed to be a continuous statement that I never actually spoke. Statements, made hours apart, were juxtaposed to create the false impression that they were related."

So which sentence was it?  What did they make him say that he disagrees with?

He's mad he came off looking like a jerk, but he never says his opinions were actually misrepresented...

The thing is, I remember reading just last week a column by the OTHER guy that was interviewed for the same exact segment. He said that TDS people will re-ask questions so they have a continuous question-to-answer stream, and therefore can't be found to have edited things out of context. That's why the interviews are so long, because they keep re-asking questions to keep the continuity. Now, they may throw out some of the questions/answers in between, but those are his real answers to those real questions.

2014-02-07 08:56:06 AM
So they are in some back room spicing together soundbites? That's how they do it now?

Is there anything these people won't do?

Thanks for the heads up subby.

Any link from NewsBusters (never had gone to that site before) is going to be avoided from this point forward.

Summary?

Self-entitled dude says lots of stupid shiat that would make him look bad if it was ever shown on national televsion. His stupid shiat is subsequently aired on national televsion, and dude is now upset. Dude fabricates a story about things being "taken out of context" to try to save face.

Challenge: TDS doesn't edit that way. The question they ask and the answer they show is one continuous take. If you start rambling, or something, they'll stop, re-ask the question and let you answer again to retain the continuity. IT saves their butts from getting sued for "taking things out of context".

Schiff's appearance was just one of 11 January segments that targeted conservatives, with only one report mocking a liberal. Four segments mocked both sides.

Lol. I love how conservatives claim to be anti Fairness Doctrine yet they act like it's illegal to make fun of conservatives without making fun of liberals an equal amount of time.

2014-02-07 08:59:30 AM
As NewsBusters documented, the show is overwhelmingly hostile to conservatives. Schiff's appearance was just one of 11 January segments that targeted conservatives, with only one report mocking a liberal. Four segments mocked both sides.

So what you're saying is that The Daily Show is more fair and balanced in its critique of political ideologies than any legitimate news media outlet in the country? Let's see how far that kind of outrage will take you.

2014-02-07 09:00:49 AM
I just watched the segment, the interviewer was Samantha Bee.

When she asked for an example of someone who would be worth $2 an hour, he actually said "the mentally retarded."

Yeah, tons and tons of editing there.

No. That's not how reality works. You can't just say "they had more stories hostile to conservatives than liberals, therefore they're biased against us!". Reality does not conform to a "both sides are exactly equally bad all the time" narrative. It might be that conservatives just did more abhorrent shiat in January than liberals did.

Anyhoo; some asshole claims they spliced together soundbites to take his words out of context, that doesn't prove that they did.

Have people not realized yet that The Daily Show is closer to political satire than it is to political news? If you are pure evil or make a stupid statement they will point it out and they will have their fun with it. The sad thing is that it is the only show that will call politicians out on their bullshiat.

There are more details out there.

http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2014/01/30/investor-peter-schiff-digs-him se lf-in-deeper-after-daily-show-remarks-about-the-retarded/

In short, he claims that he was misrepresented because they aired him saying "mentally retarded" and that it was a hit piece because Samantha Bee failed to tell him the correct term is "intellectually disabled." His opinion that they could work for $2 an hour is exactly what he said and meant.

What a complete and utter fud he is.

2014-02-07 09:05:46 AM
Of course that bit was edited, but it accurately represented this pud's noxious views. I actually clicked the goddamn link just to see what he was accusing them of, and he's got nothing except "they made me look bad." Uh, no, dude, you did that yourself.

F*ck'im. Gotta love the callous disregard for people's misfortune coupled with the thin skin - what a winning combination.

SomeoneDumb: Perhaps a specific example or two would help with his argument. Until then, I'm unswayed.

The linked mediaite has the examples.  Newsbusters itself is just throwing shiat without giving details.
Apparently his main gripe is that he (despite having a close relative with Downs), asked Samantha Bee what the politically correct term for mentally retarded was, and Samantha didn't immediately jump in and stop him from making himself look bad.  And that they dared to use that question and answer with no editing between the two when they aired the interview.

2014-02-07 09:07:51 AM
The segment where he said retarded people are worth $2 an hour wasn't cut and spliced.  He's just an idiot and is trying to do damage control and he knows he say whatever bullshiat he wants and hard righties will back him up.

I give it 4 hours before TDS releases unedited footage of him saying stupid shiat on his own.

It's not hard to get a stupid person to say something stupid.

2014-02-07 09:07:52 AM
Sorry buddy, but if the views you hold are so noxious that airing them makes you look like an asshole, there's a good chance it's just because you're an asshole.

Mad Scientist: Do people still agree to be interviewed by the Daily Show, unaware of what they do?

Unaware of something they don't do?

Yes, they don't play the interview as one continual block of time, but the answers and the questions are continual. This is similar to the editing charge on Rmoney's 47% comments. Editing for time =/= dishonest editing.

2014-02-07 09:08:40 AM
As NewsBusters documented, the show is overwhelmingly hostile to conservatives. Schiff's appearance was just one of 11 January segments that targeted conservatives, with only one report mocking a liberal. Four segments mocked both sides.

Interesting "math" you choose to use... Only "one" attack on a Liberal, yet 4 more that attack "both" sides. I don't know when you guys checked your owner's manuals last, but "both sides" would include the Liberals, so that's 5 Liberal "attacks".

2014-02-07 09:08:42 AM
The Daily Show didn't make Schiff look like an asshole, he did that all by himself. He went on the show out of his own arrogance, and even now he believes it's not his ideas that are abysmal, it's just they way The Daily Show framed them. Never once though did he ever question that maybe if he sounds like a callous dismal excuse for a human being who makes self serving excuses for greed without a care for the rest of humanity, that perhaps these are character issues within himself and not simply a "hit job."

This type of introspection is simply not possible by ego driven narcissists, so might as well blame everyone else for not seeing you in the proper light.

Yap, the Breitbart one made me laugh.

A lot of the comments seem to blame Schiff for being "foolish for agreeing to be interviewed by a leftist show"

Then there is the one guy who states he has blocked Comedy Central (among other channels)  ....

I wouldn't call that satire, i'd call that actual journalism. Hell, I still remember when Jon was questioning Sebelius, and he asked the same question 4 times as she was trying to weasel out and not answer the question. He actually will hold people's feet to the fire.

Schiff claims the show was four hours long and that his comments were edited to show him in the worst possible way. Neither the article nor Schiff provided evidence to support this claim. The article simply asserts that "The Daily Show" is mean to conservatives and guilty of some past transgressions.

Barry Ritholtz was recently interviewed by "The Daily Show" to essentially take the opposite side of Schiff's argument. http://www.ritholtz.com/blog/2014/01/how-i-ended-up-on-the-daily-show /

Ritholtz said:
"Second, it appears that TDS has some smart lawyers who've thought this thing through. All of the answers were recorded following each question in one continuous segment. When I screwed up or ruined a shot, they had to go back to ask the question again, with the response immediately following in the same shot.
In other words, they don't cut up your answers or pull them out of context. Question, Answer, Question, Answer. I assume this keeps litigation from angry remote guests to a minimum."

//Cheers

The things he said were pretty god damned ignorant and nasty.  He really sounds like an ignorant and nasty bastard in that segment, and I suspect that he is an ignorant and nasty bastard in real life.

But I am going to reserve judgement until I see the unedited clips.

Forgive Peter Schiff. He's often on CNBC, the reporters from which have an interview style similar to a tee-ball game in which swinging at the ball, but not necessarily making contact, counts for a home run.

Just like Don Yelton I guess.  Each time one of these people get interviewed they decide that The Daily Show did some meticulous editing job to frame them in a less than positive and sometimes abhorrent light through no fault of their own.  Their words were taken out of context and spliced into some type of character assassinating Frankenstein.

Here's a tip.  When you are being interviewed by the Daily Show, that little red light on the camera means that it is recording and that thing dangling above your head isn't a foam covered carrot, it's a microphone.  If you say something that can be aired in a sound bite that will be taken as offensive, IT IS INDEED OFFENSIVE, even in snippet format.  If you don't want to be perceived as a douche, don't say douchey things.

If the soft-headed media-puppet mush of humanity that constitutes the Democrat voting base didn't get their biases programmed by the Daily Show, believing it to be newsy and intelligent, then there'd be no need to criticize the Daily Show.

As it is, they do.

But, this sort of transparent propaganda goes on everywhere among Progs. The New York Times recently ran a piece on free-market economist Walter Block, and out of the 4-hour interview, the "reporter" quoted Block as saying that "slavery wasn't so bad ... exercise, sunshine ..."

It turns out the "reporter" deliberately misquoted Block, conveniently turning his meaning around 180 degrees. Block was making a sarcastic joke -- they edited out the part where he said that the crux of the problems with slavery isn't the labor (which a lot of people do, and continued to do after slavery was abolished), but (a) the lack of free choice in occupation and (b) the inability to keep the fruits of your labor. He was saying how critically important those 2 things are.

But the Times made it sound like Block literally thought slavery was great. That goofy idiot on the Daily Show uses sarcasm about 90% of the time, but the New York Times seems to miss the point whenever anyone tries to promote anti-Prog ideas like economic freedom.

And it all seems to emanate from New York ... hmmmm.
