Putin is a well-known dog lover and is frequently photographed with his black lab, Koni.

You know who else was a dog lover?

And stave off post-Olympic disappearance at hands of the prosecutor for corruption. There exists many ways to curry the favor of Tsar Vladimir I.

I read it somewhere, and it didn't seem like that much, but I suppose it's relative.

With Sochi being a resort town I suppose there isn't a homeless population who might have suffered the same fate.
When Pgh hosted the baseball All Star Game, they shipped them all out of town for the weekend. Nice "helping hand". Basterds.

My point exactly. 60k seems like more than enough.

Probably nothing, they get to take them home for supper though. It's Russia after all, can't live on beets cabbage and potatoes all the time.

I remember the Atlanta Games busing the homeless out of town.

I also read (on mobile, so no link) that there are worldwide organizations who want to help...hopefully a humane solution can be found.

This whole Sochi Olympics thing is so farking entertaining. I have an unfortunate amount of contact with under 30 year olds who think it's all purposely bad pr, in an effort to make Russia look bad, all countries are equal kumbaya bullshiat. They don't buy for a second the conditions ie, hotel, water, electricity stuff. The only thing they seem to be focused on is the homosexual angle, which OF COURSE is the biggest deal in the world, not, god forbid, the general conditions the entire populace is living in day to day. Most of them, were born post 1990, so have no idea just how farking evil and 3rd world Russia really is.

/Putin is still kind of awesome though, just cause he's so ballsy

I'm really surprised that they haven't emphasized the fact that many of those hotels are charging $500+ per night for the conditions you see in the photos.  A lot of the excuse making has been around 'well what did you expect for $3 a night?" memes.

Check out this gem:

Dmitry Kozak, the deputy prime minister responsible for the Olympic preparations, seemed to reflect the view held among many Russian officials that some Western visitors are deliberately trying to sabotage Sochi's big debut out of bias against Russia. "We have surveillance video from the hotels that shows people turn on the shower, direct the nozzle at the wall and then leave the room for the whole day," he said. An aide then pulled a reporter away before Mr. Kozak could be questioned further on surveillance in hotel rooms. "We're doing a tour of the media center," the aide said.

And I disagree that Putin is awesome - perhaps a bit amusing if you're not governed by him

Deripaska, who has built a $8.5 billion fortune from aluminum
Deripaska was also responsible for the construction of Sochi's main road, seaport, airport and the Olympic Village.

Yes,built his fortune from aluminum. That's the ticket. I'm sure he had nothing to do with the tens of billions in cost over-runs.

I bet you and Putin see to eye eye on a lot of things, particularly the gay stuff.

Anyway, westerners aren't helping with these kinds of comments:

FTA: "A charity financed by Deripaska has stepped in to try to save the stray dogs around the Sochi Olympics site that have been systematically exterminated in the past few months."

Um...not that it isn't a nice gesture and all, but how do you save dogs that have already been exterminated?

I know, I know. That isn't what the author meant. Seriously though, good on this guy.

Putin's awesome, but not in a 'waffles are awesome' kind of way. More like a 'sheer don't give a fark evil Bond villains' are awesome' kind of awesome.

Also, really hoping they're trying to encourage spaying and neutering.

What is the kill rate in dog pounds in the US? I think a high percentage are getting put down. So the difference would be that in the US they get a few weeks reprieve?
