Cool. I was in Mexico yesterday, so I anticipate getting a kick out of these comments.

I'm glad submitter let us know they were "severed heads" so we didn't think they were the unsevered variety.

rural vigilantes sprang up a year ago to try to drive out a cult-like drug cartel

I feel like there has to be a "Three Amigos vs The Cthulhu Cult" story here.

Went to Mexico once (Acapulco) about 5 years ago. No interest in ever returning. Leaving the confines of the hotel was an....interesting proposition.

Ernie: Okay, let's review: you've got a Hugo, a Little Joey, a Frank, a bad Stu...
Tommy Spinelli: No, bad Frank.
Ernie: That's what I said.
Tommy Spinelli: No you didn't. You said bad Stu. Stu was just so-so.
Ernie: No, sir, I said a so-so Stu.
Tommy Spinelli: You did not. You said bad Stu!
Ernie: Yes I did and everybody heard! I said a so-so Stu!
Tommy Spinelli: You said bad Stu!

I too came here to make Eight Heads in a Duffel Bag jokes. I too was too slow.

I blame the coyote.

Michoacan has been dealing with the "Knights Templar" cartel. They were so fed up with Government inaction, they formed a vigilante group. This group had an immediate impact- the cartel was put into check. They were so effective that the Federal Government decided to allow their existence while both fight the cartel. There is some speculation that the vigilantes are a new cartel springing up, but they deny it and I've not read anything otherwise.

Having said that. As long as a huge customer nearby wants what these cartels are selling, this will continue. Mexico's failings from the cartels are a result of our sh*tty War on Drugs.

Been to Mejico 3 times. Robbed each time, Cancun, PV and Acupulco.  Let's just say I've seen enough of Mejico for one lifetime.

Been to Mexico once, for a week, about six years ago. Visited Mexico City, Federal District, Naucalpan and Teotihuacan. Great archaeological museum in Mexico City. Great enjoyed Diego Rivera's frescoes in the Ministry of Education. Had amazing food in a number of places for little money. Parks and zoos, the emperor's palace. Visited UNAM---was trying to buy some weed from some students, but they would have none of it---they just gave me a giant handful. Enjoyed climbing the pyramids in Teotihuacan, strolling the streets downtown, playing chess in the park, concert in the city. Marketplace at night. Bought souvenirs for cheap---cooking utensils, clothes, tequila. Was not robbed. Would visit again and again.

Did all the above.  Met my fiancee djing in Monterrey before the Zetas ruined everything.  Still go to DF and Pachuca regularly. It's only the north and the west that's tre farked (excluding Guadalajara).

And the video of their demise will probably be uploaded to BestGore or NarcoMundo (or MundoNarco, can't remember) before long.

I visited Mexico back in 2007; granted we only left our resort twice, but we didn't actually venture into Cancun proper. A friend of mine was in Acapulco when 25 bodies were found laying on the side of the road in...2011 I think.
