That seems to be a guide for guys.

For women, all that is required is

Step 1: Find random character
Step 2: Sluttify character
Step 3: Profit from mouthbreathers

Doesn't help that I initially read this as "Interested in getting a colonoscopy?"

They forgot, "Don't let your bosses Furry son find out about what you do unless you want your career at Bangkok Wok to become an endless cycle of blackmail and shame."

I... I had this friend, you see...

Step one: Actually look like someone.

Being a slightly overweight, middle-aged guy with a beard pretty much leaves me out in the cold.

You must really be sheltered from awful cosplay. :P

Expect a lot of negative comments. Either you a) are a slut b) know nothing of what you're cosplaying as c) others might call you fat d) wanking e) general douchebaggery.

What are you on about? There are many geek icons you could cosplay as: George RR Martin, Peter Jackson, George Lucas...

Have not yet read TFA, but my words of advice would be:

1: DO NOT WEAR THE SAME FRAKKING COSTUME FOR THE WHOLE FRAKKING WEEKEND!!
For God's sake, bring a couple of costumes or just wear it on Saturday which is the main day anyway. You wear the same costume all day everyday,   you sweat you get smelly, no one wants to be around you.

2: If you have a costume that is so large and so bulky that you really cannot move or it takes you a half hour to go ten feet then
DO NOT GO ANYWHERE NEAR A HALLWAY WITH CONGESTED FOOT TRAFFIC!
GOD, I HATE THAT! I'm trying to get from point A to point B all the way on the other side of the convention center and I'm getting held up by some jerk
in a three ton plastic Gundam suit he made!

People of color (me, I'm Latino) are also very limited.

Trust me, there is little to no need for step 2 when it comes to female sci-fi/fantasy characters.

I am giggling like a schoolgirl because I knew right after I typed his name everyone would pile on the hate, but I couldn't think of anyone else who kinda fit the Latino bill who looked less like Edward James Olmos.  I could have used Rush Limbaugh, but I wanted to keep the idea of ethnicity intact.

Carlos Mencia:  the Dane Cook for Latinos.

I don't want to get into cosplay. Been there, done that - over twenty years ago.  I simply want to get my face into some cosplay boobies and engage in some serious motorboating.

This on looking like someone.

When I was thinner and sporting the appropriate facial hair I looked like young circa Ace of Spades album Lemmy. You show up at a concert looking like a younger hotter version of the lead singer you WILL get laid.

I can (and do) pull off Ghost Rider pretty well, tall and fairly solid build, but haven't had the time or inclination to work on too many others.

/Could possibly pull off Doctor Strange

In the comments, the "Blind attorney/Daredevil" costume was a rather clever one.

If you're really large, you could go as Kevin Smith, just need a hockey jersey and long jean shorts.

Actually I did Hunk from Voltron one year - did a group costume with 5 of us doing Voltron Lion Force. No Sentai costume, just thier street clothes and painted motorcycle helmets I made. Won first place at our local show. (I also got over for my Voltron Hockey jersey...)

My inner geek does not need a costume.  Nor does it need for me to watch Big Bang Theory.

Please stop telling me what the fark I need to do to 'be a geek'.

I cannot tell you how many times that friends or family have told me "You need to watch that show you'll think it's hilarious because you like that stuff!!!111!!"

I farking hate that show.  It's so unfunny it's painful.  The jokes are predictable and even worse, lame.  It has never made me laugh and there are at least a dozen shows on television funnier than the big bang theory some of which aren't even comedies.

Big Bang Theory is the Amos and Andy for our generation. I'll just leave it at that.

"Big Bang Theory" is sort of like imagining in "Life Goes On" was an uproarious comedy where everyone made fun of Corky.

step 1 - pick a character to cosplay that matches your body type.  for instance, if you are a fat girl, pick Marvel's The Thing or Blob, not Poison Ivy or Harley Quinn.

:)

You know, if other people like the show that's fine! Different strokes for different folks. I'm really not the "stop liking what I don't like" guy, I just want it to be ok that I don't like the show and leave it at that.

I worked the RenFaire as an actor for over 13 years.  Motorboating a wench at random was a good way to get your ass handed to you.

Main rule, if she says no, then no. Don't beg or be an asshole, thank her anyway and move on.
