(Onion AV Club)   The seemingly unfilmable "Preacher" comic will be adapted for TV. Good: AMC is developing it. Great: Has the show runner from Breaking Bad. Fark: Written by the guys who brought you Green Hornet and Pineapple Express   (avclub.com) divider line 66

Don't care, Saint of Killers on TV. I'm hype.

Preacher is one of those comics that hasn't aged terribly well IMO. Like, I remember the awesome moments from it, but the dime-store philosophizing and Garth Ennis trying to write a serious relationship that doesn't just involve two drinking buddies make me cringe today.

Having Seth Rogen write this and think he can do a good job if he can just overnerd it enough doesn't bode well.

The good news is they already have an Arseface....provided they wait to start filming until he's released from jail.

Agreed, it hasn't aged well at all.

It still has its moments, and would work as a mini-series, I guess, but their going to have to match The Walking Dead's level of quality to get it right.

Dream casting... GO!

I don't have ideas for the leads yet but Peter Stormare would be good as Herr Starr.

If they can't say "fark" what is Jesse going to tell Arseface's dad to do to himself?

Spitballing here, but maybe Ron Perlman as Saint of Killers?

Finally, Preacher escapes WBDC hell.

...of course, Seth Rogen is involved, and it's on AMC, so...

And there's no way little Tulip will get her first gun.

/The real cover to #52 still hasn't seen the light of day, unlike Hellblazer: Shoot, which made it out of the vaults between major school shootings.

Though good luck getting Liv Tyler to play Miss Oatlash. And I can't really see Bruce Campbell playing Si.

Someone else had the same idea.

And Katee Sackhoff or Kristen Bell as Tulip? YESPLEASE.

Love the idea of Fassbender as Cassidy. Helps that. Fassbender has some Irish in him. Don't think he'd do it though.
Biehn as Saint of Killers works too.

He's not Irish, but how about Jason Flemyng as another consideration for Cassidy?

When they were first talking about this thing, I thought Patricia Arquette for Tulip (particularly visually), but it's been so long that she's a bit older for the part, and of course she played nearly the same thing forever ago in True Romance...

I'm cautiously optimistic, but this really should be on HBO. Like REALLY should be on HBO.

Oh, and.... I actually liked the Green Hornet.

6. My Friend Dahmer
7. Paying for It
8. The Death Ray
9. Drinking at the Movies

I respectfully disagree; it's still a favorite of mine. I find that is has Ennis' signature style of cowboys, loonies, and perverts that I've been raised with since I was 15. I'm being cautious about it as a series, but I will watch it.

2014-02-06 10:30:53 PM
My picks:

Jesse: Timothy Olyphant
Cassidy: Chris O'Dowd
Tulip: ummm.... Katee Sackhoff?
Jody: Michael Rooker
Starr: Chris Meloni
Sheriff Root: R. Lee Ermey
Si: Seth Rogen

10. Black Summer

Would like to see that one. I would also add the Authority.

img.fark.net

Enough there for a five-season run and CGI, tastefully applied, would serve it well. I can't say the fundies of America would dig a disinterested God in a bowler hat, however.

No, it has not. Read it last year and all I could think about was how much I've matured since the 90's. Then again, I don't like Ennis in general that much. The best thing from him is  The Boysand what I like of it is in spite of Ennis. Once his shock-value wears off, the rest is pretty thin.

I thought Ennis was wonderful on his run on The Punisher. He got that character very well.

There was a short before the movie where Natalie Portman was (nearly) naked.

I remember working in a comic shop while Preacher was going.
I love Ennis. HITMAN remains one of my favorite series of all time, but during Preacher he came out and said he was just writing crap to see what he could get by the censors.
That's not a reason to write a comic.

2014-02-06 11:45:01 PM
I'd rather see The Boys but preacher is a nice consolation. I think it's aged well. It's a fantastic Concept and if they write and cast it well it will be awesome - if there is some stale dialogue in the comic, fine, it's not like the actors will be reading it word for word.

Lots of great poems were written when drunk and gray songs composed on the toilet. The motivation or intent hardly matter.

So basically the top of your personal wish list for movies you want to see consists of a lot of human-flesh-eating rapists but one of them is a fish-hybrid?
I'm pretty sure you can skip straight to "Legend of the Overfiend", man.

It's what the nerds are calling an Executive Producer these days.

As for Preacher and Garth Ennis...forget it. Not interested.

2014-02-07 12:15:39 AM
Actually... sticking the people involved in Pineapple Express on this one is probably pretty appropriate.

Maybe subby is remembering it through the rose-colored lenses of childhood nostalgia or something, but the comic was like 50% camp and 30% narm.  The balance was silly melodrama.

That's not to say it was BAD, but it was much more silly/comedic than it was "epic".  Whether it was intended that way or not.

I think he means one just about Wolfwood and not that douche Vash.

/One of the first animes I saw. Thought it was awesome at the time, but when I tried to rewatch it recently I wasn't impressed. Bebop, now that holds up to repeated views.
