I'm pretty sure I believe a single person can't possibly fundamentally transform the entire nation. Certainly not in four or eight years.

Well, we elected a black man president and right-wingers lost their farking minds. That's a transformation of sorts.

What's interesting is that this little phrase he uttered in the heat of a campaign appears to be at the root of all the Right's whackadoodle freakout derpshow over Obama. I see them use this phrase when mocking him quite often.

Right. And they act like this is some amazing gotcha moment.

"So, you want to fundamentally change America?!?! I guess you want to change our FREEDOM?!? And hasn't that America you want to change been good to you?! Well? WELL?" It's five f'n years later and this is what this lady still wants to ask the President of the United States. Like her zinger is going to blindside him, make him look deep into the mirror, reconsider and finally resign. Jesus.

If Obama hadn't been elected President, then the Tea Party never would have taken root and the GOP wouldn't be currently devouring itself. That's a pretty huge political transformation in American politics.

But in fairness, Obama said that America was just "five days away" from changing the awful policies that allowed Wall Street to cripple our economy. Those policies haven't fundamentally changed since his election. I didn't believe they would even when he said that. But it was a nice sentiment to think that a lowly President of the United States could actually force bankers to do something.

2014-02-06 06:03:49 PM
Obama didn't literally transform the portion of North America's landmass occupied by the United States into a giant robot that can also transform into a lion or a dinosaur or something. Therefore Obama is automatically Benghazi, the Palin and such as.

"... we are five days away from fundamentally transforming the United States of America.
"In five days, you can turn the page on policies that put greed and irresponsibility on Wall Street before the hard work and sacrifice of folks on Main Street. In five days, you can choose policies that invest in our middle class, and create new jobs, and grow this economy, so that everyone has a chance to succeed, not just the CEO, but the secretary and janitor, not just the factory owner, but the men and women on the factory floor."

When you read the quote ... what do the Republicans disagree with him about changing? That would be a fundamental change in America if he managed to make lower 80% wages keep up with economic growth again. But isn't that a fundamental change we all agree on?

The Republicans take only the line "fundamentally transforming the United States of America" and leave out all of "you can choose policies that invest in our middle class, and create new jobs, and grow this economy, so that everyone has a chance to succeed, not just the CEO, but the secretary and janitor, not just the factory owner, but the men and women on the factory floor".

Then the Republicans read in all this nonsense he didn't say into "fundamentally transform". The intellectual dishonesty is glaring and relentless. Bill-O even did it and he is one of the saner Republicans.

It was an implicit Godwin. He didn't say it out loud but implicit in the statement was that if Hitler could fundamentally change Germany, maybe Obama wants to change America in a fundamental way too. Thereby imputing that Obama could have some Hitlerian goals with his "fundamentally transform" line.

If you have ever read a right wing comment thread, there are continuous discussions of Obama being a tyrant, emperor, king, Hitler, and the like. If you make any Hitler mention, you have an obligation to clear the subtext in light of all previous Hitlerian accusations about Obama. So I say the failure to affirmatively clear that subtext makes it a  Godwin rule violation.
