I'd make the lunch rice and beans. Then I'd be fired for violating USDA nutrition rules.

2014-02-06 04:50:41 PM
Fark that.
You put some collard greens, alligator ribs, hog jowls, black eyed peas, hominy grits, and some chitin's on that menu and we'll talk.

2014-02-06 04:50:50 PM
It figures a Libby would want to hold a diversity assembly.

But yeah, Fried Chicken, Corn Bread and Watermelon is a pretty much a racist menu for black history month.

Just fine for a church picnic, though.  Or just a regular southern-style meal.

2014-02-06 04:56:54 PM
What, no Kool-Aid or grape soda?

2014-02-06 05:00:33 PM
Ohh c'mon, I mean it's not like they tried to serve fried chicken and wate-

But when the school announced a menu of fried chicken, cornbread and watermelon, other students and parents became offended.

Well, shiat.

Ha, I went to the public school around the corner from here.  It's been awhile since I graduated, but the percentage of black students at this school is probably very low.

Kind of begs the question of what a "Black History Month" menu that doesn't incite outrage would look like.

Oh my god. I'm so glad the coworker that sits next to me left before pulling up this thread because I can't stop laughing at that GIF.

Are stereotypes about liking a particular food even harmful?  Seriously, I'm whiter than sour cream and I love fried chicken and watermelon.  Is it somehow bad to be thought of as someone who would eat such things?

2014-02-06 05:07:04 PM
Everyone loves fried chicken. Especially blacks.

Oh for F*CK'S sake.

Well, doing a peanut festival in honor of George Washington Carver is probably out of the question these days, what with hypersensitivity on allergy issues.

This article does a good job of summing up both fried chicken and watermelon issues:

http://www.npr.org/blogs/codeswitch/2013/05/22/186087397/where-did-t ha t-fried-chicken-stereotype-come-from

It's a code, and it depends on context.  The big issue is that it's about the power dynamic.  It's been historically used by people to describe another group of people.  It would be like if you went to Europe, and they said "Oh, I know what all Americans like," and they brought out a bunch of packaged junk food.

Sometimes in the Air Force, we'd get certain Southern dishes during Black History Month at the chow hall.

Was it racist or trying to remind all of slavery in America, like the Passover meal? Hog jowls ain't prime pork meat, IMHO.

That was an interesting read.  Sure context is important.  I would think it would be much more offensive though if they had used things like pig's feet and chitterlings, because that was what many slaves ate because their masters wouldn't, rather than a food common to all ethnic groups in the modern USA.

What no heroin? I was told that heroin was the perfect after dinner dessert to go with fried chicken, corn bread, and watermelon.

I'm putting forward a World Resolution. Anytime this sentence describes a situation the situation is summarily ignored.

What, no collard greens? Definitely not racist.

My high school always had the most delicious corn bread. God I could eat a pan of that stuff right now, soaked in milk...

/Strangest boner, etc

I wish we were elevated enough that these items would no longer hold an issue when combined (because they're farking delicious). But then, some people still complain that there's a black president in the US, so racism is still an issue that should be treated with care.

You know they probably should have just shown the classic Kung Fu movie The Last Dragon.

No, damnit. The only hot sauce that should EVER be used in any application is Tabasco.

And here I thought I loved fried chicken because it was delicious. Turns out I'm genetically predisposed to it!

That is a good question.  Maybe slow cooked ribs and catfish with a veggie side other than collard greens?

Probably it's best not to try anything.

It sounds like a good lunch to me.

/part black and contributing to the stereotype
//fried chicken, cornbread and watermelon is delicious

Same thing happened in Denver a few years ago.

Count me in the "I'm white and love fried chicken" crowd.

Blacks should be PROUD of what they did for fried chicken. Until slaves added spices to make it taste good there was just crappy floured fried chicken. That's not racism, that's fact. If it weren't for slaves we'd be missing a signature Southern American food.

You, sir, need to expand your horizons.

There are many, many good options beyond vinegar, red pepper, and salt.

In the country where I went to school, principals were also teaching a subject or two. Hopefully this one is not teaching English.

There was a strangely racial aspect to food in Tyler, Tx. The KFC was run by white trash, the Wendy's by blacks, the Chinese place by jews, and the japanese steakhouse / sushi was run by Koreans.

Of course, if you wanted good fried chicken you really just had to drive a few miles to the Williams Family fried chicken shack.

Now I have the option of the place run by highschool students with rancid oil, or food poisoning from illegals with no understanding of cross contamination.

Do your part for racial harmony. Stop black people from eating. You could be helping to create a final solution to racial tensions in America.
