Target Builder: "These are the senators on the far left of the ideological spectrum"

Of the US political spectrum. I'm pretty sure none of them would be considered 'far left' anywhere else in the West.

By global perspective a liberal would advocate for free college education, repeal of the 2nd amendment and a consumption tax.

I don't think you have one of those, do you?

These rankings are so absurd. They start from a false premise -- that liberalism is defined by the Democratic Party platform, and likewise conservatism by the Republican Party -- and just get worse from there.

Linux_Yes: every CONgressman is for sale if the price is right.   that's the nature of crony capitalism.

Ranking Her Holy Highness Elizabeth Warren 31st most liberal is an obvious attempt to gird her street non-lib cred for a presidential run.

We are not fooled.

You forgot repeal of the death penalty.

Conservatives should be ranked by how much they hate Obama.    Liberals should be ranked by how much they love Obama.  It is all about Obama.  Biden is the most Liberal politician.  Just look how much he loves Obama.    The most conservative political is the Governor of Arizona because she was all up in Obama's business at the airport.

Good point.  Basically, it is the capacity for empathy and willingness to try new things versus, fark you, I got mine and I will soil myself if we try anything new.

Of course the most liberal will always be the one who runs for President next.

Because People in power are Stupid: I'm sick of this false dichotomy.  There are more than two sides to every issue.

In Washington, there are fewer than two sides. The rest is all theater.

FarkedOver: Barry Lyndon's Annuity Cheque: The most liberal list is hilarious.

Three ones, seven fives, and the top fifteen ends with three thirteens.

And zero Elizabeth Warrens.  I guess she's no lib.

Part of the issue is that studies like this are more like "who votes with their party most often" as opposed to a true "liberal/conservative" ranking.  IE, if you voted against "Obamacare" because you wanted single payer instead, that would be considered a "conservative" vote as opposed to a "really liberal" one.

It says something about the current right-left political spectrum in this country when Chuck Schumer is tied for "most liberal." When I first began voting, in the mid-'60s, he would have been considered an unexceptional moderate.

This list also confirms my desire never to be forced to live in Idaho.

catmandu: Those lists show just how divided and goofy Wisconsin is: Senator Baldwin is tied for 5th most liberal and Senator Johnson is 9th most conservative.

Behold the power of Presidential election year voter turnout demographic shift.

At a glance, it looks like there are more fringe Ds than Rs when you look at senators that vote over 80% their way, or representatives that vote over 90% their way.  The Tea Party might be running out of gas.
