Stupid rule.

Make them play with 4

2014-02-06 08:55:20 AM
Ignoring the fouls the Lakers beat them with a three man bench that became a two the one man bench.

Then no bench.

So the Lakers had some truly exhausted players with no way to get a break and the Cavs couldn't take advantage?

Heckuva team ya'll've got there.

The Cavs are awful.  There used to be only a couple of players that didn't give a crap, but not caring spreads like wildfire, and Deng is the only holdout.

Don't know why you would bother, there's a far better game to watch.

I love the severe sounding, yet practically useless penalty the Lakers got. Oh no, a technical that is not assigned to any player specifically! Not that, why that gives the other team ONE WHOLE FREE THROW.

I've been of the opinion that what basketball needs is penalty boxes. Wouldn't you love to see power plays instead of boring-ass free throws?

True, but NHL is rapidly catching up in that department as well and the big contract with NBC is probably helping.  Unless the NBA stops being lame sometime soon, hockey could be the #3 in a few years.

It's a shame Sacre didn't commit another foul; he could have been only the second player in the modern era to commit seven in a game-and the first one did it by accident (the scorekeeper didn't realize seven fouls had been committed until after the game was over).

I followed the link to the boxscore of the 7th-foul game -- the player (Cal Bowdler) racked up those 7 fouls in all of 15 minutes.  In those 15 minutes the only other things he did was:
-attempted two shots from the field (made one)
-grabbed two defensive rebounds
-that's it.

And this was in a blowout game (Portland beat Atlanta 131-95; that's probably why the scorer lost track of the fouls), so he was probably up against the Trail Blazers' reserves.  This is probably why you've never heard of Cal Bowdler.

NHL fans should be more concerned with Soccer's recent gains in popularity than worrying about the NBA.

So you'd rather share $200m per year vs $930m per year so you could sell an additional $10m in ticket revenue?

If that becomes a threat again, the NBA will just send another Lawyer over to become NHL commissioner and systematically eliminate the competition.

Well, you'll not get an argument from me.

The regional sports network here is Fox Sports Wisconsin, which broadcasts Milwaukee Bucks games. We don't have an NHL team so when the Bucks aren't playing, we get a Minnesota Wild game instead.

Honestly, the Wild are a hell of a lot more entertaining to watch, unless you're the sort of masochist who enjoys viewing the Bucks' regular epic faceplants.

Well, techs accumulate toward a suspension for the season. Kinda unfair to assign it to a dude when you're forcing him to play.

Let's point out instead that the Cavs outrebounded the Lakers by 17, shot 15 more FTs, were against a team with six players total for much of the game...and lost because they couldn't hit the broad side of a barn.

It's only applicable if there are no more bodies. No one is interested in watching a game end due to foul-outs and 5-on-4 is way too big an advantage.

Nash is marked in the box score as a DNP - Coach's Decision but (from what I heard) he went to the back to change into his uniform when it became clear that they were going to be short.

The only explanation is Mike D'Antoni does not know the rules.

Came in to say they should have had to play 5 on 4, but I can't let this slide.

As a hockey fan I have to say #3??? If we count college and pros separately (and we should since they have different media contracts and different fan bases) there's:

NFL
MLB
NBA
College football
College basketball
UFC
NASCAR
Golf
Tennis
MLS

The NHL needs to worry about dropping out of the top 10 in USA spectator sports. #3 is not happening any time soon.

UNC_Samurai: The rule in the NCAA is, if you have fewer than 5 players eligible, you only put what you have left on the court.

Even better idea, if you get below 5 make them recruit a random fan out of the stands and pay them a 1 game at the league minimum contract, have like 4 nba players and a random schmuck out of the stands.
