we had something similar happen here.

a cop was directing traffic at a house fire, and he told one of the firetrucks to stop for whatever reason. the fireman said "nope" and kept on going, and ran over the cops toe. cop yanks out the fireman and arrests him for assaulting and LEO.

The fire chief and the police chief(who both hate each other) agreed the next day that the cop and the fireman were both idiots. a few months later and the cop is no longer a cop, and the fireman is no longer a fireman.

"years back a lot of blacks did not qualify to get on the police dept. The government in all their glorious wisdom made them lower the standards so they could hire the one's who were not qualified. Wonder if this guy was one of them."

I was all like, "WTF?" and then came into this thread and found out it was a Glen Beck site. Then I was like "Ooohhh."

Aww, who says our sense of community is dead?  Nothing unites Americans like hate.

As for the actual kerscuffle, not gonna judge based on the story (most news should come with a "based on a true story" disclaimer), but around here, firemen, construction workers and police eat up way, way, WAY too much room.  Single-lane fender-bender?  Time to close up three lanes for two miles.  Laying the foundation for a big box store?  Let's close two lanes (how the FARK did they get permission to do that??).  Car stuck in a ditch?  SEAL. OFF. EVERYTHING.

Obviously this didn't take place where I live because when the cops and firemen meet they pretty much set up a damn roadblock.

When I read about police stupidity like this, I feel my blood pressure rising. Then I remember this CSB:

A couple months ago, I was waiting on the side of the road to cross five lanes of traffic on foot. (To say my city is pedestrian unfriendly is a huge understatement.) A cop is pulling out of the parking lot I'm next to, and he leans out to ask if I'm waiting on the bus. I explain my situation, and he just says "Hang on a sec." He pulls out to the middle of the street, flips on the lights, and gets out to stop traffic in both directions. Leaning on my cane, trying to hobble across quickly, I get about halfway across when the cop tells me to take my time.

/How awesome is that?

Wait--it gets even better. Two weeks or so after that incident, another cop did the exact same thing.

And then I tried crossing on my own a month later and got hit by some geriatric guy pulling out of a parking lot. (No injuries, mercifully, other than my pride and a soda that went flying.)

Permission? Hah. They just do whatever the fark they want.

I was going up I95 one day and two state troopers (VA) pulled out 3 cars ahead of me, got abreast of each other and slowed traffic down to 45 MPH. After about 30 minutes of this, I was wondering WTF, so I called the number for the troopers and asked dispatch why two of their troopers where slowing down traffic. She said she knew nothing about it. About 2 minutes later (when I guess someone must have called them) they resumed normal speed.

Lets pretend for a moment, without a whiff of any actual evidence this is simliar to what happened. Lets pretend the Firemen were parking iresponsibly for an accident where nobody was seriously injured (contrary to the written description in the article in terms of where they parked, and the seriousness of the injuries).

The cop is still a complete and total farking moron who should be fired.

Arresting a fireman will do absolutely nothing to get the trucks moved faster, and in reality will slow down any work the firemen were going to do before they thought it was ok to move the trucks.

There is no intellegent way to slice it where the cops actions helped at all.

No.

Just no.

Cops don't even have a top 10 most dangerous job anymore, and most of the danger is fromt heir own poor driving.

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying it is easy or that you shouldn't do everything you can to put them at ease when you get pulled over (window down, car off, keys on dash, hands on wheel) because if you make their job easier they are less liekly to ticket you, but not because their job is that dangerous.

I'm not going to speak to construction workers and police (although the police would have similar reasons)...but as far as "firemen" go, we block traffic as a SAFETY measure.

There are actually protocols (called SOPs or SOGs) as to how you pull up to an accident scene that dictate how and where you park...and why.

I'm a firefighter and we cover one of the largest stretches of highway in the entire province of Nova Scotia.

There's been more than once that we've rolled up to an accident scene and had someone - be it a fellow firefighter, police officer, pedestrian, walking wounded, etc. - hit by another car that's going SCREAMING by in the other lane...or because they're gawking at the accident and not paying attention.

So, you can be guaranteed that I'm not going to jeopardize the safety of anyone on the scene by leaving the lane open.

I wonder if the firefighter, in between thinking the cop's a dumbass, thought about the $17k score another firefighter got for being arrested while doing his job?

Also, I figure they both knew they were on camera, no reason to give viewers any ammo(for the firefighter) or at least any more(for the cop).

Also, as a cop I wouldn't want to mess with guys who have firehoses and a truck that conservatively weighs 100 times what my patrol cruiser does.
