bratface: WTF? They had seven years to get it right!

As a citizen of a tongue-in-cheek corrupt country, I can tell you that they're thankful for the money, and remind the media that these are are all bad rep stories, and point to the premade happy facade they made with only a third of the budget.

/Seriously
//If the people overseeing the preparations came from Mexico, a Greece, and <Insert country with a blatantly corrupt government>

I like how the link in TFA to http://subscribe.ru/group/na-zavalinke/5903224/  gets a predictably messy English Google translate, but the last line: "Грёбаные уроды!!!" is spot-on. Now I know some key Russian.

2014-02-05 11:07:03 PM
The real shiatstorm hasn't even started. Athletes are going to miss events because of poor transportation. Protesters are going to get shot. Judging is going to be even more corrupt than usual. A few countries will actually pull out entirely. Equipment thefts will cause major disruptions. Throw in a few high profile kidnappings and we're going to see one hell of a show.

What's surprising is all the time and money they've had to build infrastructure, but they still expect people to dump their shiat stained toilet paper into a waste basket. Heck, they could have gone with a bidet if they really didn't want people flushing toilet paper. This just isn't what people should see when they're hosting a world class event.

And to think, they won the bid over Salzburg, arguably one of the most beautiful cities in the world. I stayed in a youth hostel in Salzburg that was honest to god, 1,000 times nicer than what I'm seeing in here.

Contrast that with Rio, whose thinking on prepping for the Olympics (and World Cup) was "first we have to do something about those drug-gang-run murder slums, then we need a subway system..."  They've been working to get ready for a over decade and 2016 will be a hell of a show.

Underwater curling could be awesome, in a sort of meditative sense.  Like watching a sloth.

I kinda wonder who all actually got this money. Because it seems unlikely that individual hotels were getting setup with some government money to prepare for all this, which is likely what would be necessary to replace the ancient plumbing which can't handle toilet paper now.

Internal graft and corruption, same as it ever was.  Everyone sneaks a little piece of the cake, and by the time you're done you have a pile of icing with no support.

The Soviets were hideously bad at economic, but they managed to tamp the corruption down and actually make and build things.  But things have returned to the way they were now.

The good news is that Russia is finally entering the late 19th century.  They'll catch up to nations like Italy, Greece and Spain in 150 years or so.

They don't mind you doing it on principle. It's the plumbing that's not working.

Spain isn't bad, Northern Italy isn't corrupt (which is, unsurprisingly, where all their economic activitity takes place). Greece, at least Russia has a vaque idea of how much they spend on their olympics.

I wasn't disagreeing about closeness, I just like numbers and wanted to share my findings with the class.  45 minutes is pretty close, that's how long it takes to drive from Detroit to Ann Arbor.
