(NESN)   Most people build a backyard ice rink by turning on the hose and flooding the yard. Then there's former NHL'er Bill Guerin, who spent $500,000 building this piece of awesomeness   (nesn.com) divider line 28

Yeah, this isn't too surprising... I bet Kobe doesn't have a non-regulation hoop bolted above the garage door either.

Pfft.  It's nice for a backyard rink, but it looks like just about any outdoor community rink in my city, of which there are hundreds.  Now if he was capable of keeping artificial ice and had a zamboni, I'd be impressed.

Chuck Noll lives there.  Lemieux lives there.  Barraso lives there.  Franco Harris.  So yeah, there's new and old money.

The source article claims he has a zamboni. That's probably part of the $500k.

Ok, well you made it seem like you thought it was old money that paid for this. Old money is when you don't have to work at all, you pay advisors and accountants to make sure you keep making more money from your money that you inherited from your father who inherited it from his father and so on and so on.

All money from professional sports is new money. All of it.

The distinction around here is the difference between Cohasset and Hingham. Cohasset is old money that's been passed down since the Industrial Revolution if not further back. Hingham is full of people that got rich off the dot-com boom or the various real estate booms.

Well shiat, now I'm thinking that technically old money did pay for this. Team owners have old money  that they use to make new money.

I built a cross-country ski course in my backyard, you just gotta go in a really tight figure eight about 400 times.

It's an outdoor box. Every community in Canada has at least one. Mainly used for lacrosse in the summer.

Here's a rink built in Newfoundland by a regular joe, they have charity games there for Easter Seals which provides services to his disabled son.

Absolutely! Just show up, ask for me or Alec.  There is no warming hut of any kind though.

My son is a goalie too, he's been taking shots from the adults so he's gotten really good, really fast.  Quick advice question, I'm getting him a new blocker and glove this weekend: what would you recommend between: Reebok, Warrior or MacKinney?

I couldn't link from mobile, sorry! If you really are in the area, the guys play around 6pm every day weather permitting. We go on days the boys don't have hockey practice or a game, Wednesdays and Fridays usually. It's pretty chilly today, but there's no wind so we might go.

I have an ultrafark acct, email me if you want to play.

Either Warrior or MacKinney....I'd lean toward Warrior. They make pretty durable pads that last.
