I hear that prior to the collision they attempted to avoid the dike...but their attempt was muffed.

It's ok because the ocean's fertility will be enhanced around the wreckage.

TFA: It was not immediately clear what volume of cargo was involved.

It's not an unknown volume of fertilizer. The captain loudly said "we're in a large pile of shiat".

Only tres amounts of the cargo can be salvaged if they start at once.

Eventually it will float out to sea with the remnants of the superstructure dangling from it underwater.

Tip of the hat to the French rescue team.  It has to take some stones to go down on that cable to get those guys out.

/ This time, it doesn't look like it's going to buff right out.

Check out the video.  It looks kind of rough to launch a lifeboat

gfid: Check out the video.  It looks kind of rough to launch a lifeboat

That's a fully-enclosed lifeboat. When sealed up it is essentially airtight, and can sail through almost anything including a full-on fire. Its engine will likely be designed to breathe cabin air too, with compressed air in the lifeboat supplying enough to get you through ten minutes or so of the engine running and the lifeboat being fully occupied, plus some overpressure to leak out any incomplete seals and prevent noxious gases entering the lifeboat.

High seas aren't a huge issue for one of these, so long as you don't mind puke flying through the air inside. At the very least there will be grab handles in there for you to hold onto, if not full-on seatbelts. It may capsize, but it'll be designed to be self-righting, and the engine will be designed to keep running through a capsize.

The real issue is that the ship is beached on great big boulders. If the lifeboat had been deployed, odds are it'd have gotten crushed between ship and boulders, and even if it managed to scoot out from between them, odds are pretty good it'd have beached too and gotten holed -- at which point it's a hell of a lot worse place to be than the ship is. Its engine will be tiny and relatively underpowered for the size of the lifeboat, meaning a very low top speed, and little maneuverability up close to the shore.

/been 20 years or so since I did my SOLAS training
//got to release a freefall lifeboat myself as part of it
///freefall lifeboats are fun -- like the world's shortest rollercoaster ride
