(Politico)   When you 'go off the grid' you don't tell people "I'm going off the grid', you just 'go off the grid'. Unless of course you're trying to pump up your tinfoil hat teevee show ratings, then it's okay   (politico.com) divider line 12

Rule #1 of living out of sight of society:  DON'T STAND OUT! This means don't announce your shiat, don't advertise your plans, and don't behave any differently on the surface.

The only way people notice you and give a shiat is when you act like an attention whore.

Crazy evil gun hoarder? No one cares until you shoot up a school.

In short: Don't be a dick and make people pay attention.

Even in these idiotic "off the grid" reality shows they're always waiting for some helicopter or train to drop off their supplies. How is that "going of the grid?"

You're just living in the middle of nowhere and waiting on people to bring you sh*t. You're not "living off the grid."

So did he bury his cash in the desert somewhere while "Off the grid?"  Because it's mighty hard to access a bank account without leaving a footprint.

wildcardjack: One family "off the grid" might survive until supplies run out, but it's not enough people to remain off the grid.

Small villages tended towards 100-150 people. This gave enough diversified labor to develop talents in baking, butchering, and candle stick making. The specialization of skills in a society improved life for all involved. Even if he tried to learn all the skills he'd still have to do all of them all the time.

Simply put, self sufficiency is a poverty trap or a lie.

I think this assumes a social involvement which may or may not have to exist: I.E., I can sell/trade goods to you for goods you have that I need. You can be a butcher that carves up my wild game in exchange for a portion of the meat or currency. There need not exist any actual social relationship to establish this.

To many who go "off the grid" the concept is to disengage from what they feel is an intrusive societal relationship, rather than necessarily cutting off all commerce and business interaction.

I have to go to the local bigger city to buy certain goods, but I can avoid the people there like the plague and only go in when I absolutely need something.

Maybe he meant "off the GIRD" because he asked his healthcare provider if Prilosec was right for him.
