Yeah! And we should burn down the hospitals that they run, blow up homeless shelters and level any soup kitchen in operation!

After that we should kill every kid in their orphanage, carpet bomb any university, burn all works of art(music architecture, painting, sculpture and literature) and then hang every layman group affiliated that did good in their community.

Why? Because the percentage of pedo-priest is the same as the number of Pedofiles in every other walk of life. It's not higher and it's not lower.

And it's because the church is a Human institution. It has good and bad aspects.
And it doesn't help that in a predominant anti-Catholic pro-Protestant country, that the media harps on one religion.

Will it be on a double bill with The Magdalene Sisters.

But you keep kissing that crucifix.

Catholics do a lot of good in the world, and have also caused immeasurable harm. I'm not ready to say they've turned a corner, but the new Pope is moving them in a good direction.

They can't just undo hundreds of years of oppression and pain, but at least they're trying to do something.

As someone who was adopted from Ireland, and has since been reconnected with my birth family, this story resonates with me. I'm Filomena in reverse. In my case mammy died before they found me.

And my story doesn't personally involve the Laundry Houses, but I know people whose story does.

/The Magdalene Sisters is a definite one timer

I'm not going to defend the Catholic church, but this wasn't exactly an unusual thing to happen to unmarried mothers back in those days, in any country. There was no welfare state, so you either got your parents to raise the child or got them adopted.

The worst to me is how when they knew that she had been shamed into giving up her child been checking in to find out what had happened to him that they told him that she had abandoned him so they could not reconnect.  Talk about heartless.

This is very true. The young lady who went off to live with her relatives for a few months after getting a little chubby was extremely common, if you had the money. Being an unwed mother meant being shunned and only offered the most menial of work, if you didn't lose your job altogether. It's a major plot point in many works from the era, most noticeably in Agatha Christie's [70-year-old mystery-I-won't-reveal].

1996? That's when the last laundry house closed.

I'm an atheist. And the Catholic Church is not the only organization that does this, sadly.

It's not right, but it's not the only one that did this.

I wasn't aware of that. But if we're talking about the early 60s, certainly true.

Ireland was pretty backward, though. The church had enormous power in the country until quite recently.

It's most common amongst teachers and social workers. Belief system doesn't seem to matter much, although within the Church, it seems that Irish Catholic clergy tend to be worse than other strains of Catholics. Which makes sense, because Irish Catholicism is, compared to other Catholic sects, more conservative and closer to its pagan (druidic) roots of strict theocracy.

But by all means, bash those evil Papists, what with their funny languages and brownish skin and idol-worship.
