So... White drops out due to the high possibility of injury that could keep him from taking the gold in the half pipe.FAIL tag is for subby on this one.

It looks that way for now, but the media always hypes up problems before every olympic games.   The games will go well and the problems that do happen will be blown way out of proportion.  Get ready for 90% reporting on security delays, insider  and ticket scandals and 10% on actual olympic events.

Usually the 'will they be ready' articles have faded away by now and been replaced by 'yeah, looks like they're ready, and now let's watch them introduce themselves to the world'

Not this time. This is different. This time the articles are 'no, absolutely not, they are not even close to ready, everything is awful'.

They're cutting it close, for sure.  But it won't be worse than Greece or the SA world cup.  There were stories of changing to different cities before those events too.

I don't know...the Olympics start in two days.  There are a lot of problems to fix in two days.

Figure skating sucks because it's score is based on judges.
Snowboarding free style events are awesome because...well...even though the scoring is based on judges, it's sponsored by Red Bull and Mountain Dew and you get to play gnarly music in the background.

Cutting it close? No. Time's up. The media is THERE. The athletes are THERE. People are checking into the hotels to find the rooms that they booked don't exist yet because they haven't finished building the hotel. You're hearing reports of 'the doorknob came off in my hand', 'I don't have Internet', 'I don't have water', 'it's dangerous to use the water', 'look at this picture of the brown shiat that came out of my faucet', 'why don't these toilets have partitions', 'why am I not supposed to put toilet paper in the toilet', 'why won't this fire exit door open', 'why are all these manholes open', I'm not even making any of these up. They're not ready. They spent $51 billion and couldn't build hotels that are even safe let alone pleasant.

The absolute best was the warning to not allow the water to touch your face.

There have only been a few practice runs on this course and we get a concussion, broken collar bone and the biggest name in the sport gets a wrist injury and backs out.

Oh Sochi, you ate a lot of paint chips as a child didn't you?

This ^^^^.

"Don't let the water touch your face; it's dangerous" pic in a thread from yesterday sealed it for me.

To steal from a more creative Farker: this is a massive fuque de clustere.

No, the absolute best was this exchange in the comments from last night's Deadspin article:

Comment 1: "So what CAN the water be used for?"

Comment 2: "Killing the dogs."

Presumably he wouldn't have dropped out of slopestyle if the course wasn't so risky and dangerous.

They use living American veteran racists that served in the Korean War.

/Yeah, the judging pool is getting quite small.

It sounds like several people got quite injured on the course in the practice runs.

I wonder how much pressure was put on him by NBC to to withdrawl? They are scheduled to show slopestyle in prime time tomorrow night, and now they just lost the biggest name in the sport.

50.999 of the 51 billion spent went straight into the pockets of the Russian mafia with good kickbacks to the politicians at every level. I doubt even one penny was spent on actual construction materials or labor.

This time last Olympics, the headlines were more "Fatal accident on luge track training run highlights concerns about unsafe track design." Kind of like what we have right now.

The difference is that we were hearing those stories 6 months out. It's worse now and it's 2 days out. You can build a hotel and finish a stadium in 6 months. You can't in 2 days.

The difference this time last Olympics is that not that the luge track or the hotels were unsafely designed, it's that they were finished at all.

These are people that straight-up lied to the IOC in saying that their airport terminal was finished, even going so far as to hire the locals to play as travelers at the airport.  The only plane in and out that day was that one that the IOC inspection staff came in on.  That was 3 years ago.

Given that they couldn't even get the hotels right, I would have serious concerns over trying the ski jump, bobsled, luge, or skeleton runs.

And to think Sochi lost out to Salzburg. Actually nestled in the Alps, it's one of the most beautiful, clean, and safe cities in the world, and run by some of the most efficient people in the world.

Instead we get this nightmare.

I only wish he'd use his status as one of the american stars to shed some light on the poor conditions surrounding the entire games so far.

Oh, fun fact. You know what event is being added this year? Luge RELAY. The first person goes down the luge run, then slaps a button at the end of the course that signals the next person to go.

Yeah, this is the perfect Olympics to add something like that.
