I see they bought into the Metro UI.

2014-02-05 01:32:30 AM
Could we please get rid of these silly tiles and move back to some reasonable indented textual format...so that you can at least find something on the web pages?

2014-02-05 02:08:55 AM
OMG, and I thought it sucked ass before.

2014-02-05 02:16:10 AM
That is pretty awful. Windows 8 awful.

2 megabytes and 2 minutes to load for the win.

2014-02-05 03:42:01 AM
it behaves very strangely in chrome when scrolling, not so bad in IE, and it gets even uglier when using anything but 100% zoom.

2014-02-05 07:14:50 AM
This further proves that liberals suck at creating websites.

DON.MAC: 2 megabytes and 2 minutes to load for the win.

How much on Linux?

2014-02-05 08:43:13 AM
Wow. I hope they didn't pay someone to do that.

It's like they combined people's two favorite things: scrap booking and post cards!

Content is confusing. Here, have a picture of a kitten!

Great! Another UI that assume I can't read. I'm looking at you, Netflix.

This might be the final straw that keeps me from going to them for news. Any suggestions for a news site that treats me like an adult?

2014-02-05 09:04:51 AM
You'll get over it.

2014-02-05 09:05:36 AM
Needs more brightly colored flashing text and small background tiles behind the content tiles. Random scrolling might also work. It's getting there.

2014-02-05 09:07:00 AM
That looks like one of those "one weird trick" sites, now.

What the f♥ck. NBC? What the f♥ckity f♥ck?

Perhaps you should look into a site or service that aggregates the stories the for you.

How about Google News?

You just posted in one.

I thought it was just me, but that  news site is like someone puked a bunch of photos on a splash page and you have to hunt and peck for what you're looking to read.

Pulled it up this AM and said WTF? I had been using MSNBC then NBC as my home page for news almost forever, now I just changed my home page to Fox News.

When you want to see the News, You want Text Headiines in Categories and links to stories. Not a million Damn Picture Tiles in no particular order. Now NBC is Crap!

Tried to Email them a complaint but my mail won't work with their site now!

Looks like some Brillaint Young Guy just talked them into this, now it's Screwed.

it needs to have flash animation advertising that makes the browser unresponsive... the way fark does things

2014-02-05 09:18:54 AM
I can't remember how to do it, but it used to be possible to turn off the CSS on a page. And -- if available -- use an alternate one. The tiles might be great on small devices, but it would be nice to have a CSS that took advantage of the larger space available on a computer screen.

I'm going to expand on that a bit:

Nerds, you don't own the internet anymore.  No one wants to look at walls of text or small print to find what's interesting except for you.

Like it or not, with the proliferation of phones, tablets, and other devices, the Internet will be increasingly made for kids who have grown up with Instagram being normal.  Get over it.

I'm sure your professional journals will still have lots of small print.

violentsalvation: That is pretty awful. Windows 8 awful.

And I took the time to send them a feedback letter stating this.

Subject:  Feedback - NBCNews home page redesign

Do Not Want.

I am not impressed with this panel-based presentation; more space for less content.  While this may be appropriate for mobile phones and other touch screen devices, it's cumbersome for the desktop user.  Desktop users prefer text or icons, panels are a poor use of space and are harsh on the eyes (at least in my case).  By the way, the panel presentation is one of the bigger gripes people have with Windows 8.

I am likely change the home page in my browsers to that of a news organization with a more traditional front page.

Demographics (for your research purposes)
male
age 40-50
location - Georgia, United States
occupation - information technology
usage - 5 or more times/day.

 Sincerely,
some farker <- not how I signed the letter

PS - I just looked at a few news sites:
Yahoo - not much better but they do have a category selection menu on the left side.
BBC - messy
ABC News - not impressive
CNN - much better
Google News - much better
Fox News - the presentation is much better than NBC but it's still Fox News (no thanks)

2014-02-05 11:16:04 AM
LARGE PICTURES

2014-02-05 11:27:28 AM
It really is pretty ugly and chaotic. I appreciate the attempt to use the full width of my stunning and in no way overcompensating for anything screen resolution, but it really looks like someone just spread out a full deck of cards in a grid. No recognizable pattern or structure.

2014-02-05 11:27:44 AM
Won't even open in Firefox, all I get is a blank page.

2014-02-05 11:30:28 AM
I also assumed someone had hacked it this morning.  Count me among those removing it from their news bookmarks and looking elsewhere.

2014-02-05 11:38:19 AM
Now I understand what a hot mess means ..

2014-02-05 11:45:29 AM
Dear NBC News: White space is good.
