Having lived in Soviet-era apartments back in the mid 70s as a kid, it sounds like not much has changed there in 40 years!

I've been to two Olympiads - only because in neither case did I have to rely on local accommodations.  Why does the IOC award the Olympics to places that are not at all prepared and can't possibly support them?

/Aside from the bribery, I mean.

These Olympics are going to be hilarious. I'm still counting on the bobsled track or the ski jump platform to collapse on live TV.

Looking at those rooms they are putting groups of millionaire hockey players in I'm forced to wonder how the notorious Olympic Village sextravaganza is supposed to occur. Either it doesn't, or it's gonna be a huge freaking orgy.

/betting on orgy

Because of the time difference any fail will be on the news websites during our daytime/evening. You may not see it unfold live, but you'll see it shortly after.

You can't pick up CBC on a TV antenna?

After hearing how fast your electronics get infected with malware over there, it's probably best that wifi is not available.

Makes me wonder how they could ever consider Boston for an Olympics. No way the infrastructure is here for all those people coming in. Boston/Massachusetts took a 3.5 mile tunnel project that was only supposed to cost 2.8 billion, and turned it into a 22 billion dollar project. And after all that the tunnel leaked and the work was so shoddy the ceiling fell and killed a person. Boston may rival Putin and his friends in terms of pocketing cash from government projects.

Boston can be proud of their hole and I'ma gonna let you finish, but the Sochi Olympics is the crookedest shiat of all time. OF. ALL. TIME.

this is going to be great.

The 2016 Olympics in Brazil are going to be awesome.

Sochi sounds bad enough, but I can't wait for a ridiculous story like the Laotian badminton team being kidnapped and held for ransom after they got into an unlicensed cab in Sao Paolo.

Ever been to Russia? I only get wasted drunk a couple times a week at 30 years old. I'm both a model of industriousness and efficiency there.

Awesome. It would be beyond great if these games are a total clusterfark.

I doubt any accommodations would live up to the expectations of the North American media.

If anything this seems like a bigger farkup than it would have been under communism.  At least in the USSR days the powers-that-be would have made sure that the condition of the facilities wasn't embarrassing to the nation on the world stage.  Under capitalist Russia the attitude seems to be 'hey, I got my kickback, I'll be on my 100' yacht in the Mediterranean when the shiat hits the fan'.

Plus, while I've been following this peripherally, I didn't realize that the climate in Sochi is as warm as it is.  Seriously, the place has palm trees?  Can Miami get a bid for the Winter Olympics in the future?  Why didn't Russia try to do this somewhere in Siberia?

How is the toilet paper in trash cans a big deal? Working in Mexico it was the same deal. The worst was Sundays in the plant. AC turned off for the weekends, no janitors and Mexican food for all made the bathrooms with their poop paper trashcans on the manufacturing floor unbearable by about midday on Sundays. Thank God we were posted up in the visiting engineer offices.

We forget how close Russians are in a fraternal way. They assume that teammates would want to bunk close by and everything close by. I've seen some articles and videos posted here that demonstrate that.

Wait... So that means Pyeongchang (Winter Games 2018) is at an even lower latitude than Sochi... (between the 37th and 38th Parallel, the latter of which is better known as the DMZ).

My cubicle mate and I were discussing the probability of an attack during the opening ceremonies. We figure that security is probably going to be pretty tight during the opening; if anything happens, our money is on an event with lots of spectators.

Hopefully we are both wrong.

The Olympics and World Cup in Brazil will be serious contenders for "Biggest Fuque de Clustere.*"

Don't flush the toilet paper? Did the Russians get their sewer system designs from Mexico?

Sheesh, I can remember when we were afraid they'd invade (see also: the original version of Red Dawn).

All you need is mountains tall enough for snow.  Everything else is indoors.  Sacramento could probably bid for the Winter Olympics.

\Unless the drought continues.

So it has a Mediterranean climate.  Remember, where on the globe it is doesn't mean much unless you are between the Tropics.  Bodies of water and ocean currents regulating the climate play a part too.
