I'll bet the folks at Stormfront are creaming their jeans over this one.

My collector uncle has a Luger. It's the only thing in his collection I want besides my grandfather's Colt Peacemaker.

They changed their slogan on the webpage before I could screenshot it.

The Pistole Parabellum 1908 - or Parabellum-Pistole (Pistol Parabellum) -  is a toggle-locked  . The design was patented by  in 1898.

Yeah, lots of Nazis in 1908.

Even if you want to ignore the Nazi connotation, "Para Bellum" is just a strange name for a political organization anyways.

It's ok, they want peace.

Guess we should stop calling the funds a politician has available to run for office a 'warchest', too.

"it's part of an old Roman cliche, "Si vis pacem, para bellum"-if you seek peace, prepare for war."

I don't know what "peace" the GOP seeks. Probably the same "peace" that comes whenever robots want to enslave humanity "for their own good".

Parabellum can refer to a 9x19mm hand gun cartridge, or the hand gun it was made for,
the Luger P08 parabellum, which was designed before WWI. And yes, it was used by the nazis, but it was invented before they existed. So, no, you can't invoke nazis on this one. If they'd named it Storm Gun or Walther maybe you'd have a point. Goddamn it gawker, get your facts right before busting out the "OMG nazis" crap.
/Para Bellum is a stupid name for a tech startup.
//All of their computers run on a network of vacuum tubes.

Like their beliefs, policies and actions - yeah. So pretty much everything..... so fark 'em.

The Luger is a cool gun but I've always wanted a Mauser instead for some reason. I love the way the Mauser looks with that boxy magazine in front of the trigger gaurd.

I'm sure that's going to work out just great for the GOP...

Maybe they can get some of the guys that put together Romney's software from the last election?

Yeah, I'm aware of it's meaning, it just doesn't seem to be a good fit.  It's better for a private security firm or something.  It makes about as much sense here as  Carthago delenda est or  O tempora! O mores!

And the swastika was in use for thousands of years before the Nazis took it. Guess which usage most Europeans think of when they see it now?

One of the smartest engineers I've ever worked with was also a full-blown Objectivist.  If anything, I think it goes to show that you don't have to understand human nature in order to understand technology.

Wow, I can't give fewer shiats.

You know who else used a German pistol?

HAN SOLO. His blaster was based on the C38 Mauser. Now you learned something, which is more than you can say about that Dhalsim-like reaching in the Gawker article.

Para bellum

is only "Prepare for War" not the whole phrase.  So this is probably just another pro-war research organization.

At some point the video pans to a white board with the following:

What does Republican stand for?
-Innovation
-Opportunity for all
-Freedom
-Personal Liberty
-Regan

^That is hilarious.

QuesoDelicioso: Love the Republican response: "Yeah, well, you're stupid."

It's a fair response in this case.  Gawker is reaching a little bit.  The phrase, the ammo, and the gun all pre-date the Nazis.

They would be on barely more sound ground if they called out someone from the RNC for driving a Volkswagen, since at least that company was started by the Nazi party.

2014-02-04 07:12:30 PM
That's pretty obscure, to claim that word links this thing to Nazis.
It's Latin and it is almost always used for ammo like 9mm parabellum, to describe the round fired by some German pistols.

A poor choice of name but not a Godwin.

Yeah, I hate to say this, but I kind of agree with the RNC here.  This is dumb.

Dammit Gawker, don't make me agree with the RNC.

Anyone notice how absolutely nothing of substance was uttered throughout that entire video? It was just a montage of a bunch of recent college grads spouting off "pushing the envelope" and "learn new skills" over and over.
