(The New Republic)   You gotta hand it to Putin. Most strongmen would have arranged for their critics to be beaten up. It takes real creativity to have someone chain a 200-pound sculpture of a penis to their car instead   (newrepublic.com) divider line 39

This is no different than the KGB leaving obvious signs of break-in at the homes of people they were watching. Sometimes they would even scatter porn about.

I'm sure it was his idea.

I love how the same farkers and the left adore Putin, who would never allow someone like Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert on the air, are the same ones that thought Bush was a dictator.

That thing is way better done than the chainsaw artist on the side route 1 here does, and would charge about $400 for a sculpture that large.  And thats a $50 chain.  I think they made out pretty good.

I think that people don't adore Putin in the way that they want him to be a leader of anything, but I think they enjoy the fact that there is this James Bond-esque villain who is simultaneously power-hungry, petty, and endlessly creative in the ways he can be a giant douche.

This, actually. He's a tragically comic figure - he's either absurdly evil, to which just about anyone in Chechnya can attest, or absurdly comic, to which everyone from his photographers to the person paid by the state to carve a giant wooden dick as a bizarre threat to some political humorist can attest. I'm not sure anyone "adores" Pooty-poot.

And over on the politics thread, Pat Buchanan talking about how the protestors in the Ukraine are wrong.

I swear to god, it's like they take projection to another level.

The Kermlins had launched the handle in June 2010, after then-President Medvedev, who was infamous for his simpleton's love of high-tech gadgets, traveled to the Silicon Valley offices of Twitter and set up an account, @KremlinRussia. By January, the Kermlins' antic alternative had more than 50,000 followers, and Medvedev was forced to change his handle to @MedvedevRussia to avoid confusion. Over the next three years, the Kermlins' fan base exploded to more than 700,000 followers. The Kermlins became celebrities among the outspoken ranks of "Internet hamsters," the denizens of the Web ghetto who then became the core of the protests. Last spring, they finally unmasked themselves in a glamorous spread in Russian  GQ.

I have a new favourite phrase.

Are you sure? It seemed it was Bush who looked into his eye and declared him agreeable to Republicans. What you, and others like you, seem to suffer from, is an inability to separate out criticism and praise from a bigger picture. I can say "Putin has a point" on one issue, and still think he's a psychopathic farkwad. It doesn't mean I want to gobble his cock. Nor does criticism of another point mean I am flip-flopping wildly between extremes and changing them to suit whoever is in charge.

Yes, I'm sure, especially since your exercise in projection doesn't explain all the Putin cock-gobbling the liberals did when he was crushing Georgia, taking over Syria, and promising to monitor Iran's nuclear program. Face it, anyone who remembers the left's actions won't be fooled by your words.

/but that's the left's real difference from the right, that they value words over actions instead of actions over words
//the fact that you took Dubya's words at face value while his actions did more damage to Putin's plans than either Obama's or Clinton's just demonstrates this

I'm projecting? I'm just telling you what happened and trying to explain how the application of criticism or praise over single point issues doesn't mean overall support in all issues. I don't know anyone, or ever heard anyone, agree with Putin's invasion of Georgia. I heard lots of "we can't complain because we lost the moral highground with the invasion of Iraq", which is a fair criticism, yet clearly states that what Putin is doing does not carry any morality to it. The worst thing about Bushes term in terms of international diplomacy was that it allowed every president of a tin-pot shiat hole, like Russia, to legitimately say "meh, you do it, you can't complain".
Moderately left people tend not to like war, and prefer a pacifistic approach, which means that if someone can come along at the 11th hour and give a chance for peace they will be happy. That doesn't mean they forget about all the shiat he's done.I don't know how you think presiding over the time of Putin's massive rise to wealth and unassailable power qualifies Bush as having been some proud and noble obstacle to Putin's plans. Oh, he tried to put a missile defence system in Poland that doesn't work, what a hero!
