(World Review)   Sochi is Russia's face to the world. But beneath the modern veneer lies an immense rotting rustbelt - Soviet-era monotowns. Full of unemployment, pollution and despair - these monoliths are a damning indictment of Russia's crumbling economy   (worldreview.info ) divider line

Dimensio: I do not understand. The nation of Russia does not allow same-sex marriage, and has even taken measures to make homosexuals unwelcome within the nation. Why, then, is that nation's economy not prosperous?

But they ain't got Jebus.  Without Jebus, the magic don't work.  For the magic to work, you need Jebus, guns and capitalism, then you get blessed like this:

semi-related fun fact:

a couple weeks ago somehow i ended up reading about the guy who made the song "puttin' on the ritz", TACO.

i learned that his name, Taco, is NOT a stage name (or band name) as i'd always thought...it's actually the name his parents gave him at birth!

bbfreak: Anyway, I guess my point is that the US will hit a wall soon enough too. Our failing education system, the rise of automation/robots, and the fact that social mobility in this country is not very good to say the least. Eventually that means we're going to be left with mass unemployment and no jobs unless we do something now. Thanks Republicans.

The CIA needs to manufacture 'al-Qaeda in the South China Sea'. China has a lot of problems with separatism in Muslim regions, making that a plausible entity. It's relatively easy to take out a container ship either in port or at sail. Making it too expensive to ship out of South East Asia could change the economic argument for offshoring in matter of months. Even the relatively minor problem of piracy* has had an impact on trade routes and costs.

Obviously the unexpected consequences could permanently destabilise the region/trigger WW3, tip over into currency and equity collapse, but that's never stopped anybody.

*minor in the sense that the overwhelming majority of people, vessels, and goods are released unharmed

signaljammer: Capitalism doesn't have to be incompatible  with regulation; who thinks that a business that needs to harm the environment to function, for example, is really profitable?

I'll take non sequitur for $300, Alex.

It is funny because you spelled it incorrectly.
