Methinks someone has forgotten the general narcissism of the majority of the population, along with the idea that we like to have keepsakes of memories.

The word "selfie" sucks.  The idea of capturing yourself in the moment does not.

After every selfie I take I promise myself that will be the last selfie.   However, once the shame and guilt wear off and I go through a dry spell where nobody else takes my picture for a few days I start taking selfies again and the cycle repeats.

Selfies may be a new term, but that act of taking pictures of oneself with a camera is hardly new. It probably started in the 60's or 70's when small personal cameras became moderately cheap.

But long before that artists have been doing self portraits on canvas, and in prehistoric times there was cave art and odds are some of the human figures where of the person doing the drawing. So no, the selfi are never going way.

Selfies have been around since polaroid cameras.

They're not going away as long as the human remains aggressively narcissistic.

Yes because someone who's so out of touch with the world around him that he just now found out about a fad that started years ago in his own field of expertise is exactly who I listen to for advice on future trends.

FTFA: Whilst his show features colour photography, he is best known for his stark black-and-white portraits against a simple white background, which he says helps to convey the message of his work in a direct manner

I've never heard of him, but I'm now just assuming his greatest contribution to the art world is Calvin Klein ads.

My ex and I took what would be considered "selfies" decades ago on our honeymoon. Since it was film back then it was more of a "point and hope it comes out thing" than the current fad.

I remember when Polaroid Land Cameras came out--you know, the kind that you pull out and it self develops.  First thing I did was drop my drawers and take a pic.
All grey now but still fun.  Yep, a piece of the moment.

This - there's a lot about the Now that is different than the Used To Be.  I can remember being hella excited when I talked to someone in another state, and then even more excited when I talked to someone in another country.  I had a BBS in the early 90s and once a week I'd dial over to a couple other BBSs, and those would chain to others - we had forums in which we had people from Australia!  I paid the (very high) long distance charges out of pocket, and shared in the amazing experience.

Now it's just taken for granted.  Sortof like how ultra-high-res cameras are included in practically every phone, and even TVs, laptops, tablets, etc - and all auto-focus (dozens of focus points at once, too), auto-correct for white balance, color, lighting...etc.  "Selfies" didn't happen before because the very nature of photography was different.  We're not going to return to a time when only a tiny portion of the population have access to cameras and/or know how to use them - those days are gone.

Bullsquid.

The "selfie" as you call it won't die, because every day there are girls turning 18 who want to express their independence through letting the boys in school see their nips.

When the phones can smartly stop people from sexting, THEN the "selfie" might maybe die.

//unless you're a farknut who doesn't include sexting photos in the definition of "selfie."
