Hopefully the new album will be better than the last.

Saw then at ACL in October. I was very pleasantly surprised. Never had been much of a fan but that show changed my mind.

Yeah, I didn't fully appreciate this band in my callow youth.

Robert Smith says The Cure are releasing a new album

Oh,  subby...

The Cure IS releasing a new album.

Not "are"... "is".

The Cure is a band, a single unit, and therefore "is" would be the proper word to use in that sentence. You would use "are" if you said "The members  of The Cure" instead of just "The Cure".

The members of The Cure are releasing a new album.

When I saw The Cure, they had a show that was on par with RUSH.

and last I heard, Robert Smith refuses to play "Killing an Arab" in concert

The last show I was at, he played it (sort of), but in the show before that, he skipped it.

The reason is because STUPID PEOPLE don't realize it's a song about  The Stranger  by Albert Camus (it's a book, folks), and in the post-9/11 world, these idiots were using it as an anthem for their hatred of Arabs. Robert no longer wished for his song to be a hate anthem, so he briefly stopped playing it, but then switched around the lyrics to "kissing an Arab", among others.

It's a shame Porl and Lol won't be with them but the band's always been Robert and whomever he feels like playing with at that instant.

/"My" Cure - Rob, Porl, Simon, Lol, Boris.

So those stupid people come across as nihilists with no emotional connection with any other human being. Fitting.

I saw them there as well. It was horrible.

My buddy and I were going to leave early, but went to stop for their set. They were playing "A Night Like This", one of my favorite songs.

It sounded like the entire band was being funneled through a Radio Shack megaphone. It was just a horrible mix. And no other band that weekend sounded like that.

Never been a fan of them.  But if they stop in my area and tickets aren't too expensive maybe I'll go to one of their live shows.  It's been a while since I've hooked up with a goth chick.

At least with them, barring any sort of catastrophe, you get your money's worth. Three hour sets are normal when it's mainly them.

That is overly simplistic. Using the "members of" construct, while possible, often sounds stilted and/or formal which may be inappropriate. When just referring to a collective noun both "are" and "is" could be used and should be selected based on context, there is no fixed and easy rule to use. Generally if the collective unit is considered as acting as a group you would normally treat it as a singular entity, however when they are not acting in concert then using the plural is more appropriate. One random example found on the internet:

The shoal was moving north.
The shoal were darting in all directions.

2014-02-04 05:28:24 AM

xria: The shoal was moving north.
The shoal were darting in all directions.

More appropriate:
The shoal was moving north.
Fish were darting in all directions.

If a shoal of fish is not moving in concert, it is no longer a shoal. Literally. A shoal is a group of fish moving in the same direction, so one shoal of fish cannot, by definition, contain fish moving "in all directions". It doesn't make any bloody sense.

I more or less stopped following them when the 80's ended. I've got their entire discography, and don't mind most of their output up to  Bloodletting, but could never really get into any of their later stuff. Especially their last two albums. But I'll always have a soft spot for them.

2014-02-04 07:02:43 AM
Bloodflowers. Not Bloodletting. Concrete Blonde is not The Cure. Shows how much of a fan I am.

Subby isn't wrong. In England, it is grammatically proper to use the plural form of the verb when referring to a band or sports team or other group of people. So, "The Cure are releasing a new album," and "Arsenal are on top of the Premier League" are perfectly fine.

The Cure is still good, although it's not as good as it used to be.

Man, I dunno.  I think the second sentence works in America, too.

Saw them at the Austin Music Hall back in 2008. They played for three hours and it was the best show I had ever seen. David Bowie at the Backyard was a close second.

I spent 20-something pounds on a ticket to see them in Glasgow @ SECC during their farewell tour. In 1989.

I can't believe that there are people who hate The Cure.  But then again, this is Fark.

Still listen to Disintegration regularly.  I'd argue that it's one of the greatest albums of all-time.

We felt that way at ACL...then it started raining with about 45 minutes left in his set. Then it took us 2 1/2 hours to get back to our hotel...most of it in the rain. Then they cancelled Sunday's shows (missed The National and Atoms for Peace) so we drove back home. We decided that we were too farking old to do 3 day festivals anymore. Then I got an email about 2014 presale so I logged on, got two 3 day wrist bands and made hotel reservations.

/DAMN THE TORPEDOES!

Long before the whole anti-Arab sentiment post 9-11, I remember seeing a disclaimer sticker on 'Staring At The Sea'  about 'Killing An Arab' when I bought it. Apparently they were getting flack over it long before 9-11.
