Well, they aren't pentagonal. They aren't pentahedral. The story is a lie. Five sides plus two hemispheres? What the hell is that?

/I have no idea what I am talking about.

What's the point? At least square watermelons make sense because they're stackable.

It's pronounced "gokaku iyokan" which means "5-sided orange" (roughly). But the pronunciation of the word also means "good feeling about success". "Gokaku" is a synonym for "5-cornered" and "pass" as one would a test. "Iyokan" is not quite a synonym but close enough between this type of orange (iyokan) and "i have a good feeling about..." (ii yokan).

This kind of thing would be given to students preparing for their college entrance exams as good luck. This is a big deal for the superstitious Japanese who also wear bandanas with words of encouragement and eat Kit Kat snacks. Kit Kat is another interesting one because it is also read as 'kitto katsu' which roughly translates to 'definitely win'.

Same reason Kit-Kat bars are so popular over there.  It just so happens (if memory serves) to be a pun for good luck.  So they're often given with gifts.   Also means they make really odd flavors of Kit-Kat... like corn and squid ink.

Came for the five-sided oranges, creeped out by the baby-faced pears.

Can I still drink the juice from a cylindrical cup or would that be bad luck?

Seems kinda labor intensive.

There is a weird point where carefully tended, high labor crops make sense. You could do this in the states where small producers are confident they can cover the increased labor cost. It's a status object.

Someone ought to design a growing case for that guy. A Quato mold might be pretty cool.

It's a very old internet joke about bonsai kittens. No cats were harmed as far as I know. Hell, the cats probably shoved themselves in originally for the hell of it and the person took the other pictures to start the meme.

How pervasive is this superstitious insanity over there?  We mock the Japanese, but hardly anyone here is Wiccan or a furry, although there are plenty of pictures of them for the rest of the world to mock.
