(The Daily Beast)   Dangerous new drinking game where you drink a pint and then nominate someone else to also drink a pint within 24 hours. Around here it's known as cutting back and sobering up   (thedailybeast.com) divider line 133

OK, what am I missing here. You drink a pint of beer, then tell someone else to do it as well...what's dangerous about it?

PEER PRESSURE!

But yeah...I was thinking it was a pint of vodak or something.  Apparently not.

They may be challenged to drink American beer and end up drowning in the toilet by mistake.

A pint? Unless we're talking 'of bleach' I fail to see the danger.

2014-02-03 04:43:01 PM
I didn't get it either. Unless there's some sort of multiplier effect. If there's a few dozen of us playing, then one may get more requests to drink and in turn send some more requests for others to drink, which means you get more requests to drink.

But my favorite drinking game has always been the one with the Clue movie. Take out the clue board game, hand everyone the cards for rooms, weapons, suspects and drink every time they name on of the items in the cards that you have. the person that gets the gun is usually farked.

What the f*ck?

Let me join the chorus of "This seems pretty innocuous."

I'm guessing maybe it's just that there's a peer pressure to drink, so therefore some prudes think that's causing total drunken behavioral failure?

I don't drink much, but isn't "16 ounces of beer in 24 hours" a reasonably safe thing to do?

So it's a slightly less effeminate version of "Bros Icing Bros"?

Sounds safer than that "horsenomination" game Philip Seymour Hoffman was playing...

His father Joe said, "I'm appealing to everyone who is associated with this to please stop. It cost my son his life because of a dare and I don't want to see anybody else in the same situation, because it has destroyed our family."

Yes Yes your son was a victim.

The brother of 19-year-old Jonny Byrne, from County Carlow, posted an emotional message on Facebook saying, "This neck nomination shiat has to stop right now. My young 19-year-old brother died tonight in the middle of his nomination. He thought he had to try and beat the competition and after he downed his pint he jumped into the river. If people have any decency and respect they will refrain from any of this stupid neck nomination shiat."

He also changed his profile page to say "Stop 'Neknomination' before it's too late. Share this."

I recall studies that suggest that is a very healthy thing to do. I know 2 glasses of wine a day reduce your risk of heart disease quite a bit.

According to the Irish judge in TFA it will lead to an epidemic of rape and assault.

Sorry, make that rape and MURDER!

"If the current Internet drinking contest takes hold, it is going to result in a tsunami of homicide and rape prosecutions coming for this court"

Wait, I think I found a solution to this problem, other than banning the challenges being banned via social media:

"Yeah, I've already had my fill tonight, so...challenge denied."

Oh, wait. I forgot. I'm a responsible adult.

Even a pint of cheap whiskey isn't that big of a deal.  8 shots in 24 hours?  As long as you're not butt chugging it it's cool

I suppose that it's beyond some people to realize they don't have to keep playing (or play at all). If you're too stupid to avoid killing yourself through a beer drinking game over the internet, chances are you were shortly in line for a darwin award anyway.

The beer isn't really the dangerous part, it's just the "signature" of the game, the game itself appears to be basically a game of dares with the stupidity of videotaping yourself and the internet's Infinite Well of Bad Ideas thrown in.

e.g. it's not really "I dare you to drink a beer", it's more "I dare you to drink a beer then jump off that bridge into a moving truck" or whatever, sometimes with the "and" going unspecified.  The beer is the thematic acknowledgement that you're about to do something stupid.

// Not like no one ever did something dangerous and stupid for the sake of a funny video before, that shiat predates the internet and has several TV shows dedicated to it.

who drowned after jumping into a swollen river

Am I missing something? He drank one pint then jumped into a river?

Ban swollen rivers!

I suppose it depends on if they truly wait 24 hrs or not.  Essentially, if you have two people involved who continue to challenge each other, best case you drink every 48 hours.  But, if you go out drinking together and each have 1 beer and challenge the other to a beer now you have 1 more to drink.  And, when you drink that one, you challenge back.  And, assuming that you continue to challenge you are now at 1 beer / day going forward.

So, essentially you can get to a point where you may need to daily drink the worst case single beer drinking session.

And the other thing would be people ganging up.  i.e. It's John's 21st.  10 friends drink 1 beer = John drinks 10 beers.

2014-02-03 06:28:32 PM
The article is a mess but this seems to be why they think it's dangerous

The dangerous craze-dubbed "neknomination" by the creators of a Facebook group with over 16,000 likes-is believed to be behind the deaths of a 22 year-old DJ found dead at his Dublin home on Saturday morning after taking part in drinking games the previous night and of a 19 year-old amateur sportsman who drowned after jumping into a swollen river following the downing of a drink as part of a "neknomination" challenge in the Irish countryside on Saturday night

and

The vast majority of the posts on the various pages are, in and of themselves, harmless. They simply show people drinking down cans or pints of beer in one go, often in unusual location such as while skiing or being held upside down.

So what I'm getting is that the game is "drink a pint, then do something silly." Then you challenge someone else to do the same. These kids died from the silly thing they did afterwards (dove into a river and drowned) and not the drinking itself.

They were in Ireland, so they might be using 20 oz. pints.  Which is a different thing all together.  Ayup.

God Damn that publication is complete garbage.  It apparently isn't the drinking, but the situational part of the dares that people are blaming.

I guess now that the Jackass guys are getting old we're out of things to blame teenage stupidity on.

I did a GIS for 'Neknomination' and found this article:  http://www.independent.ie/irish-news/what-is-neknomination-29973436.h t ml

It still doesn't really explain things very well, but apparently the original game was just to drink a beer within 24 hours.  I guess people started getting creative and outdoing each other by dreaming up their own alcoholic concoctions and that's where people started dying.

The article doesn't mention what the kid actually drank to cause death, so I'm still scratching my head, but I guess I kind of see where they're going with this.

OK, the picture in this article tells me all I need to know:  http://www.ibtimes.com/what-neknomination-social-media-drinking-game- f ueled-huge-amount-peer-pressure-photo-1552978

I don't know if this is one of the kids that died, but this explains enough for me...

I wouldn't even notice the alcohol from that.

2014-02-03 06:43:21 PM
I don't understand, people are drinking more because simon says?  If you let what your friends say influence the amount of alcohol you consume then you are already stupid waiting to happen.  They might say "Man up, have another" or "Put the shot glasses down, you're ruining your family and career".  Don't listen to them.  Think for yourself.

I googled it an another article says the challenge is to drink a 1/5th, which makes sense because I have quite a few idiots do this on youtube.  Also it's insanely dangerous.  Drinking ~18beers in a minute or two.
