Esn: The Stealth Hippopotamus: lostcat: lostcat: Russia seems so hopelessly awful these days. I had so much more respect for them when they were part of the Soviet Union and had some principals.

Now it's like they are the realization of the worst aspects of the free market.

Principles too.

Well they also had a ton of other countries to draw from. Back in the day all the metals that all the Iron Curtain countries got would have been Mother Russia's.

You kidding? People in the "satellite" countries were living better than in Russia itself. The USSR spent tons of money on developing and educating not just its own provinces, but those of foreign places as well. They made special trade arrangements with them, provided hundreds of thousands of foreign citizens with free university education, gave them billions of rubles in "loans" that were subsequently never paid back.  Look what happened to states like Cuba and North Korea when this tap of support was finally cut off!  There are more than a few people who think that things could have ended otherwise if the USSR had spent more on itself rather than always sending money outside (its economy, unlike the USA's then and now, was largely self-contained).

They did pretty much the opposite of the US strategy (through IMF and the like), which tends to be wealth EXTRACTION. Russia got to experience this first-hand in the 1990s as the imported Western financial experts did its best to turn it into an economic basket case.

Have you ever taken a course on Soviet History? The USSR mined out the satellites, took more money out of them than they put in, built unstable and unsafe nuclear reactors with only Russia proper getting safe ones, and so much more, almost every one of them has been better off since they left. And with the Russian economy, it was a basket case prior to the USSR collapse, since the mid 70's they were importing grain from the west to keep their own people from starving, in the late 70's they started to borrow billions from the west to the point they were in massive debt when they collapsed (in fact West Germany gave the USSR a massive loan in the late 80's, days later the USSR announced they were withdrawing support and protection from East Germany and were not opposed to reunification, shortly after that the wall came down. They sold everything for money they were so bad off). They were in horrible shape for the last 15 years of the USSR, in fact the early aide staved off a massive economic collapse in 1995, and while the plans of Jeffery Sachs were disastrous for Russia, in fact only two of the countries that used his methods succeeded the rest failed. So read some history first, maybe take some college course, perhaps some in grad school from people who were there in Russia at the time

We've come a long way from the Soviet shot-putters who had to have tests to ensure they really were female.

I'd love for you to meet my wife's family, they're from Lithuania. They would have so much fun with this.

I like my female athletes like I like my programming: Object based.

No, seriously. I'll never meet them or have conversations with them. Their only contribution to my life as pretty things to look at. And that's a mighty awesome contribution. Especially that first one.
