fatalvenom: We can haz power rankings thread??!!?!

http://espn.go.com/nfl/powerrankings/_/week/0

Last year's pre season rankings were pretty hit and miss.  They got the top 3 right, but the rest of the top 10 were pretty comical in retrospect, for the most part.

How does Chicago go 1-5 while stinking it up in OT and move up two places while Boston and Pitt move down?

What is this shiat?

Damn, but the Capitals are frustrating.  They've never been able to add enough quality players around a solid core.  Maybe it is time to replace the GM.

Stinking it up in OT is nothing new. They haven't won a game decided in the overtime period all year. I know that because I got this: My Alternative NHL Points Standings.

Chicago is 0-6 in OT and 5-8 and shootouts (Florida's the only other team with no OT wins at 0-4). But at least they're not New Jersey, who's 0-8 in shootouts.

As for Boston....their wins came against some pretty poverty teams...Flyers, Islanders, Panthers, Oilers.

As for the Pens...one of their wins came against Buffalo, so that's that. Must be nice playing in such a garbage division.

The season the Avs are having and they're still 3rd in their division. It's murder in the Central.

I dunno, at least Boston and Pittsburgh are beating these basement teams.  If anything they should have all gone down.  These rankings make no sense...even my boys the Flames, 5-0 home stand with wins against Chicago, San Jose, Phoenix, Nashville and Minnesota and only moving up 2?  Nashville moves up 4 though for beating the Jets and Devils?

These rankings just seem more and more arbitrary every time they come out lol.

Power Rankings tend to take more into consideration than simply what a team did in the last week. Yes, that is an important part of them, and what separates them from mere standings, but they also rely a bit on those, as well. You can only weight them so much before any team with a 3-game win streak becomes a top 5 team in the league.

Also note that ESPN alternates who does their rankings. There's never going to be consistency then.

Flyers are killing me this year, and the Sharks game tonight will probably be a feeding frenzy. Although Mason has been decent. At least he's just a regular crazy goalie.

Buffalo hosts Edmonton tonight in Tank Bowl '14!

What happens when an feeble force meets an easily-moveable object?  Find out tonight.

Bonus:  The Sabres aren't even starting Ryan Miller in this game, so it's really anyone's to lose.  The points are there for the dropping for the team that wants it less.

So true, and yet, I did get a little teary looking at the power rankings.

Of course the one game I got to this year was vs. the Ducks.

I think Jon Cooper is at least worth being in the conversation..
and you might be able to make a case for Boudreau (if the Ducks can get into the second round)

mjohnson71: I just hope the Blues can go a round or two without having to face a California team.

Oh just wait.  If it's not that it will be some other manifestation of Blues Luck.  Backes will be run down by a zamboni.  The jumbotron will fall and crush the starting line during the national anthem.  Scottrade will turn out to have been built on the site of an Indian burial ground and implode on itself like the house at the end of Poltergeist.  Blues Luck is a constant in the Universe that cannot be overcome.

2014-02-03 05:05:29 PM
I strongly think that the Hawks are out of gas after going hard for the past year with a shorter than usual break in between seasons. The cup hangover has arrived and the Olympic break couldn't have come at a better time for them (and would be even awesomer if the NHL pulls out of Sochi).

2014-02-03 05:07:17 PM
The Caps are 8-7 in the shootout? Holy crap, a quarter of their games played this year have gone to a skills contest.

Man do I hate three point games. It farks up the trade deadline because 80% of the league still thinks they'll make the playoffs. Come March, you only have 3 teams out of the running and they suck so bad they already sent off their good pieces back in January so the owner could get some cap relief and the GM an 8th round draft pick/ECHL reject.

Might as well use this thread to discuss the Kadri hit on Saturday and why he's not getting a suspension.  First and foremost Cody Ceci didn't do any favors by openly admitting that he deliberately turned his back to Kadri just prior to the hit(and players really, REALLY need to stop doing that).  Secondly let's look at the hit itself.
i.imgur.com
As you can see by the time index it's literally 1 second between Ceci seeing Kadri then turning and Kadri hitting him.  Then there's the point of impact.
i.imgur.com
It's not entirely from the side, but it's also not on the numbers either.  IMO it's a borderline call and at best a two minute minor.  I have no problem with Devorski letting it slide and I would also have no problem with him calling it.  Originally I was pretty sure they were going to.

Also Buffalo is ranked too high.

It was a very close call and I think the officials and the League got it right.

Given Cullens hard on for all things fantasy you'd think he rank them higher with the Kessel line and Kadri tearing the scoresheet apart lately.

Kessle, second star for Jan. second in goals behind Ovi,  fourth in points.  Yea I'd take that.  Oh I see the problem... all that and a +/- of -1

If you're wondering, here's the full Olympic hockey schedule. Just know that Sochi is 9 hours ahead of New York and Toronto, 12 hours ahead of LA and Vancouver. So Noon Sochi time = 3am EST = 12am PST

Someone in Canada must have pulled a few strings for the Canada round-robin games.  (not complaining even a little)  but dayum pretty much all of those American games are early in your time zone.

Who knew the CBC had that much pull? I didn't even realize that until you said something. Oh well, that's what DVRs and the online streams are for. I'll be able to watch them after the fact somehow.

*disclaimer* I had herd all the Canada RR games had a 'friendly' time a couple of weeks ago.

One point that may have helped.... We are not the USA, in Russia, that still means something, another is in Canada there will be live coverage of just about everything.  U.S. gets some scraps and a high-light package nightly...

Unless you have cable/satellite and the Internet. I plan on skipping all NBC network coverage and taking in as much cable and online coverage as I can. It worked for me during the London games.

Only 11 team have a positive goal differential. All 11 are in the top three in its division. All 18 wildcard/non-playoff teams are negative.

That tweet came out just now. A team in the top 3 in its division and it has a negative goal difference. Guess who it is.

As a Hawks fan, I can't begin to tell you how happy I am that shootouts are not used in the playoffs. Crawford is the most over rated player in the NHL and is useless in the shootout. As long as they don't hit him when they shoot, it's a goal.
