We have no need for ancient ways. The world is doing fine. Just another toy that helped destroy the elder race of man. Forget about your silly whim, subby, it doesn't fit the plan.

Liberals hate guitars, and the arts and the hippies who create them and the losers who enjoy them. If it wasn't for that PWB thing, Obama would be a hero.

Wow.  A wonderful article about the guitar...that completely forgets to include pics.

Luckily, I know how to use Google.

So they weren't using illegally harvested wood?

Gibson made the mistake of donating money to the wrong side.   C.F. Martin & Co. guitars used the same wood--never had a lick of trouble from the Feds!  Of course, they knew how to play ball....

Another one of the Google links I saw mentioned that a lot of IRS desks are the color of the body of the guitar.  If so, nice.

Complete non story.

Gibson didn't have it's paperwork in order.
Taylor ratted them out on it.

Feds impounded the shipment.
Gibson paid a $300k fine and the wood was released.

I'm willing to say that Gibson won't misplace its CITES paperwork next time.

Except that the CEO of Gibson is a republican

That might not be a story by itself, but combine it with the administration treatment of those they don't like and it make you go hmmm.

...they used a SWAT team to police bureaucratic mistakes?  And that's OK?  I suppose they should have gone to stampy-town and made sure they had FIVE stamps on it, not four.  The source countries weren't even interested in pursuing it.

This kind of political bullshiat is... perfectly fine.  Like blocking up a bridge in NJ.  That's OK too!

Absolutely.  The last thing Fartbongo's Marxist Thugs would want the public to know is that Dr. Ben Carson is a proud Creationist Flat-Taxer who supports stronger gun control laws than Nancy Pelosi.

Associating such universally beloved ideas with the GOP would be a disaster for the Democrat Party.

Yeah, the freedom to cut down rare old growth forest in order to make a guitar (cause, you know there's so little other wood available).

This is for an electric guitar body? WTF?

1) order old growth exotic wood without proper permits
2) get caught
3) raise a big political stink
4) pay a 300K fine and several million in legal fees
5) sell 3 guitars for $1099 each
6) profit??????

You really don't want to get into a business that uses conflict minerals or protected items if you only think potato. You. Do. Not. Lose. This. Paperwork. Ever.

Heck, even shipping stuff over borders can get you whooped, if that's been assembled from stuff like that.

Republican, Democratic, Libertarian, Potato, it doesn't matter. These people won't care, won't stop, unless someone leans on them to NOT do their job.

So really, if they weren't nailed before for bad paperwork it was because someone exerted undue influence to leave them alone. Does that make you feel better?

Which actually would have also worked, come to think of it.

Seriously? Why has it been so friggin' hard to get single payer universal healthcare passed? Or ensure that millions of folks don't have to sleep in the streets? Or punish the rich criminals that profited by screwing the poor and gambling with the country's future? Why has it been so friggin' hard to get morons to stop voting against the interests of a society, or even against their own interests, in favor of the very people screwing them and lying to them about it?

It's simple, really. It's in Gibson's interest to do so. That's it. Gibson's not a politician - they're a business. They pay off the folks that will make their business easier or more profitable. Customers? Why worry? Customers are easily-led fools, and as long as no one finds out about the fact that Gibson, unlike just about every other guitar maker in the country, would happily screw you if it means getting a Republican in their pockets, well, they're OK with that.

The fun part about this line of thinking is that correlation does not equal causation. No one gives a rat's rancid rectum about Gibson's purported political panderings. Gibson screwed up some imports, and the government did its job. The only "story" here is that conservative media outlets keep claiming that there's clearly a liberal conspiracy involved, and that Gibson was somehow singled out - despite all evidence to the contrary.

meteorite: Eh, Gibsons are overrated and overpriced anyway. I play my Epiphones (and yes I know Gibson owns Epi), Fender, and Martin way more just because I think they're better guitars with better sounds.

Overpriced yes overrated no. An Epihone? Are you serious? If you really think that then you don't know your ass from a hole in the ground. If you're talking the pre-73 models made in the Kalamazoo plant maybe. The word peasant comes to mind and I'm really not that kind of guy. I own 4 Gibsons, 2 Fenders, a Gretsch, a Jackson and a Guild. So I'm no fanboy I love all my children equally, Fenders are better? That would depend on the models we're talking about. If a Gibson is over priced what do you call a Martin? Let me put it into perspective for you champ. I have a vintage 1969 Westerly made Guild M20, I dropped $900 granted this a deal but not the kind you're bragging about 6 months later. Before I came across this one I was looking at a new off the rack Martin 0015. Basically the same guitar as the Guild but made today in the Tennessee factory lovely guitar but seriously straight off the rack $1400 and I sell dope sometimes to a dude who works at the shop so that was a friend price. If you mean the D series yeah they're around 4 bills but the tops are literally the hardwood equivalent of instant mashed potatoes. Even the worst $40 Yamaha baby acoustic with a solid top will sound better than a D series. Not to mention they're made in Whofarkingknowsastan by 10 year olds. So if thats the kind of tools you use to create thats your business but me I like to know my stuff was made by someone who didn't earn 34 cents for a 10+ hour shift in a skeevy deathtrap sweatshop building my guitar. If you wanna get blitzed and jam with your buddies in the garage to get away from your fat wives an Epiphone is fine. But take that shiat to a show and tell all the other guitar players that your Dot kicks the crap out of their overpriced junky Explorer or ES see what they say princess.

I understand now.  Republicans are such principled, patriotic citizens, that it's virtually impossible for multiple Republicans to violate the law, and be caught doing it, unless there's a conspiracy.

Tom Perkins was right -- there is a Kristallnacht against Republicans, and the Lacey Act was part of the Nuremburg Laws enacted by Obama through his time machine to marginalize and persecute Real AmericansTM.
