Pakistan hates the US. Hates us more than any country on Earth hates us. Yet we give them billions of dollars of tax payer money. Are we crazy? Well duh.

Here are the 10 nations with the least favorable impression of the U.S., according to Pew:
1. Pakistan (percentage with a favorable view of the United States: 11%)
2. Jordan (14%)
3. Palestinian territories (16%)
4. Egypt (16%)
5. Turkey (21%)
6. Greece (39%)
7. China (40%)
8. Argentina (41%)
9. Tunisia (42%)
10. Lebanon (47%)

Let's not forget what they did to the doctor who turned in Bin Laden. Made him a national hero? No, they arrested him.

gmpilot: pstudent12: Spiralmonkey: You can't judge all Pakistani doctors by the actions of this one but a broad rule of thumb is that Pakistani and Indian universities don't have the same quality of teaching that is found in western countries.  That said, this is such a basic thing, not changing syringes, that it seems like penny pinching rather than lack of knowledge. That's more on the criminal side than the ignorant side. What's the betting he will never face any judicial hearing over this? The Pakistani government won't willingly give him up and the normal press response there is to always say the accusations are false, manufactured to make a political point somehow.

Too funny. You are actually using India and Pakistan in the same sentence. One is a Islamic state where education consists primarily of madrassas and bomb-head mohammed(s), the other is a Indo-European country that goes back 5000 years science wise.

Weird.

Stupid, most likely.  India and Pakistan are quite different in a number of ways, and they play up their differences politically really hard, so it's easy to get taken in and ignore all their similarities.

And to be honest, Pakistan is worse.  It's a rather fine distinction but essentially true.  Pakistan has to deal with a MUCH larger population of the middle-eastern equivalent of Teabaggers sitting around pretending to be proud Pakistanis while also openly supporting the destruction of the federal government and the other half of the country that DOESN'T live in backwards rural farktard zones.

The local politics are an ever-complicated dance of false-friendships, diplomatic backstabbing (complete with real knives), and the occasional open revolt.

Meanwhile India has their ancient Caste system that says "born poor, deserve to die poor," I could try to be more comprehensive as to India's problems but I don't think I *need* to after that.

Buuuut, this doesn't have a whole lot to do with the story at hand.  The fact remains that if someone comes from over there and becomes a doctor over here, they usually had enough money they could graft and crony their way through the not-immune-to-corruption American medical education system.   But the inherent sexism and classism of Pakistan means such folk are going to be male, politically-connected, and familiar with the kind of games involving bribes, crimes, and fleeing the country if you seriously fark up.

To step away from the racist derp about brown-skinned furriner doctors, and move into CSB territory...

The doctor who delivered me at birth was named Dr. Khomeni.  A couple of years later, his cousin took over as the new leader of Iran in a revolution, so the guy who gave my mom a C-section to bring me into the world got to go home to become the Health Minister of Iran and the personal physician to that coont of a leader, the Ayatollah Khomeni.

It seems to me the whole "foreigner" angle as well as the "technology" angle is really just a distraction from the "bad governance" angle. In fact, the state knew he was engaged in unsafe practices years before hand and nothing was ever done about it. There is good reason why the state paid out in cash--the buck stops with them.

So I fail to see why my health insurance costs should go up to pay for fancy needles when a little bureaucratic muscle would make these types of outbreaks much more unlikely.
