My daughter and her group of K-2nd grade friends can't get enough Minecraft. When she's not playing it on the tablet, or mine or my wife's phones, she's watching YouTube videos about it and begging me to buy it for The XBox.

I suppose that young nerd have to find a thing, now that comic books, sci-fi and fantasy are "mainstream"

I have no idea what Minecraft is, but subby sure is right about that being awkward.

My daughter loves it. Watches youtube videos constantly. She plays on the 360 and keeps asking to get on a live server. Haven't allowed that yet.

I have a feeling my nieces will love Minecraft.  They're all about Legos now at ages 3-4.

It's fairly cheap to spin up a server on AWS or Azure - I run one up when my son wants to play with his friends - costs me less than a buck for every 24 hours they use it (and they don't use it more than a couple of hours a month). Certainly cheaper than a lot of kids entertainment.

Come on, don't be one of those "I don't know what ___ is" guys. Nobody likes those guys.

Okay, I think this may have just beat out the most awkward rave ever. But only by a little.

Ah yes, making fun of the socially maladjusted and the mentally handicapped.  Thanks internet, I was almost starting to think that people were generally good, but you've reminded me how wrong that kind of thinking really was.

Seriously, leave them alone, they're not hurting anyone.

I could see how I could have gotten way into it as a kid. Hell, I've played quite a bit of it as an adult. But eventually, you realize that building anything cool, even in creative, is actually a lot of work without third party editors. Not to mention that there still isn't much actual game there, and your buildings are ultimately useless.

Have her try intercraften   http://www.intercraften.org/  It seems to be pretty nice for my kids. No trashing other people's stuff and if you start asking personal questions you get banned.

Oh it does subby, it does....

Step 1: Go to a comic and/or gaming convention
Step 2: Find the room they're playing Warhammer/Warhammer 40K in
Step 3: Enter.... and get some of the the worst heebie jeebies of your life

Note: If you see a woman in that room without chin hair, or who probably isn't the mother of one of the players, CALL THE POLICE. Chances are good she is not there of her own free will.

Minecraft is one one the few games I own, and play on occasion. I noticed that there are multiplayer capabilities, and now I am so glad that I've never explored those.

So awkward I couldn't get halfway through.

2014-02-01 09:21:04 PM
I have to disagree, subby.  But you're probably one of those perfect, snooty-tooty, rich, liberal city folks who's never been tempted by the irresistible allure of an eggplant inside a Piggly Wiggly after church on Sunday.

I had to settle the Herobrine issue for my 8-year-old recently, a bunch of his friends are into the game.

My daughter has been playing for years now (she's 13) and she's been a moderator on servers, has a restaurant that she runs with other minecraftians working for her as servers, and watches tons of videos on youtube about it too.  Crazy how into this game the younger generation of nerds are.

They mostly seem like sweet kids. A little socially maladjusted, sure, but at least they're up there trying to spark discussion. It's got to be hard enough just to get that far for some of those kids.

I think the kid that asked the autism question was looking for a hero.wrongplacewrongtime. story of his life.

What, exactly, do you mean by "grown man"?

Yeah, didn't think this was much fun.  Stopped watching after a few clip,

This reminded me of a forum I used to inhabit many years ago.  Apparently some members found a website created by some mentally handicapped kids.  The website was a fan site for the original Battlestar Galactica (IIRC).  Of course, the assholes shiat all over it in their guestbook.

No, it wasn't funny, or cool.  That's called bullying.

2014-02-02 04:07:49 AM
That's so damn funny. It's EXACTLY how I imagine one of those conventions would be.

I've really come to loath what nerdy/geek culture has become.

Don't get me wrong, it's been a pretty self-deprecating and mocking milieu for as long as I've ever been involved with it, but still - stuff like this just makes me sad. Some of the questions were just downright rude and awkward, sort of exactly what you'd think when some forum flaming tweenager gets a chance at a podium - the "forge is killing 3rd party launchers" was just unmitigated gall.

I actually thought the bit with the special girl asking them to join her dad's server was perfectly nice. That girl was touched in the head, but you know what, she likes the game and she plugged her dad's server... good on her.

It's not that everyone in the audience couldn't be touched or off, that's fine. The guys smiled, took the cards and a fan's a fan. It's the people that project their sadness onto others, the autism as performance enhancing drug, the trumped up sense of worth about the community over the thing the community is based on, and the general nonsensical nature of basically unsupervised children asking dumb questions.

I dunno. Obviously biased video is biased, but there still has to be people to provide those highlights of awful for the reel to get made, ya know?

/shrug.

Our 8-year old grandson is OBSESSED with Minecraft. But being 8-years old, he's pretty much obessed with life. Obsessed with Lego, obsessed with Avengers ...

I played dor a while to see what it was all about and was the coolest grandma ever. Then I did everything, got bored, and his new obsession is trying to lure me back with something he thinks is cool.

2014-02-02 08:04:26 AM
Yeah, I don't like this.  Most of these kids clearly had autism/aspergers and this is a place they feel welcomed and/or safe.

There's no difference between this and a baseball convention,  weightlifting convention, a knitting convention.

If you videotape any convention and the people that go there it would be easy to mock as "stop liking what I don't like"

But all in all, my issue is they're kids. And someone spent time editing a video mocking children, some with disabilities.

Not cool, Fark, for even greening it

I can't laugh at this.. More than obvious a lot of these kids have actual issues beyond just liking a video game..

Brony Convention Rave!

At least the children have the excuse they are still children.
