Destroyed: The massive rock, which had been in place for 20 million years, crashes to the ground beneath

Does anybody at The Daily Mail have any clue about... no, of course not.

They can't even keep their captions self-consistent. Another caption is more accurate:

The rock formations at Goblin Valley State Park in Utah are thousands of years old, formed by the erosion of the material around the base of the rock.

Erosion on the scale of meters works over millennia, not millions of years.

Good, I hope they do time.

Besides which, I can't be bothered to be troubled by his actions when nature was going to do the exact same thing eventually.

It's a gorram ROCK! I'm pretty sure it isn't pressing charges.

Former Boy Scout leaders.  After their vandalism, they were dismissed and forbidden from any leadership position.

They got what they deserved, but it should have been worse. When something is irreplaceable, I get sorta mad when you screw it up.

It is a State Park, as BSA leaders they should have, nay, were REQUIRED to have,  KNOWN better.
It wasn't any different than carving a name into a rock face.
I still think the claim of "We were trying to save some kid from being crushed", is just some after the fact excuse they made up thinking it would get them off or garner sympathy. The video totally looks like he is just trying to prove his muscles. Too bad the thing didn't fall back onto him and crush HIM. No Darwin award though since the douche already bred. :/

except when it's in a desert

The particular goblin they struggled with before they finally knocked it over was 20 million years old.

Anyway....learning

cretinbob

The document you linked says the rocks were magma over 20 million years ago (page 5) but does not say the exposed pillar formations are that old. They are formed when softer rock erodes away from around them. It says (page 20) about the formations,

"Old goblins eventually topple and weather to oblivion as erosion unearths new goblins. Thus, on a geologic time scale, the park is being renewed and regenerated. However, the excavation process creating new goblins may not keep pace with goblin destruction if it is accelerated by visitor impact."

Its vandalism pure and simple. Yes its a goddamned rock, but if we let these idiots off lightly that will only make it clear that we aren't are favor of protecting public spaces like that park for countless generations. So fark them.

As for the camera man, he was most assuredly an accomplice in the crime. The two of them probably discussed whether or not to topple the rock before hand, and that the camera man didn't clearly why doing so would be wrong makes him almost as bad if not worse. Tell me, if someone destroys something that you value, and someone is standing by encouraging the perpetrator while filming it  laughing you aren't going to be upset with them?

The camera man was clearly enjoying himself as he filmed the crime. Fark him.

Exactly.  He did nothing.  He watched someone else vandalize an irreplaceable natural formation in a national park, and he did nothing to stop it.

Being aware of a crime in progress and not trying to stop it makes you an accessory to the crime.

I would be shocked to see a consistent caption on any daily fail article.

Warlordtrooper:... but still, its a goddamned rock.

No. It's tools like this that give cause for naysayers to close access to areas for offroaders and campers like myself who actually respect nature. Happens all the time because of mouth breathers like this.  These guys should go down.

A couple of stupid attention whores desperate to get the approval of children. Role models to be sure. Let's let these ass-hats teach our kids.

I'm very sad he wasn't crushed under the rock, but I'll settle for him having to break rocks in a chain gang for a few years as well as lose all his worldly possessions to pay off the fine.

Uh, no it doesn't.  But the cameraman probably was directly involved in the planning and encouragement of the crime.

I hope they get the full penalty. The idea that anyone, let alone scout leaders, would think this was OK to do is just too depressing.

2014-02-01 09:00:45 PM
Lead by example, rock.

2014-02-01 09:07:06 PM
I am glad these two fat farks lost their position with the scouts first.    I hope they get at least a $5,000 fine and I hope that they do some time in jail.

People this fat and stupid need a significant emotional event, like going to prison for 30 days, to get their freaking heads straight.

And for the rest of their lives, their neighbors should get together one day each summer and flip these guys cars onto their roofs.      Just for fun.

2014-02-01 09:07:42 PM
Full fine, full time, chain gang - let em break rocks for twelve hours a day and spend the rest of it in solitary.  Better yet, send em down to ole Joe in Arizona.

These two had no business being Scout Leaders, I'm glad they got the sack, and yea, as far as I'm concerned, they should do some jail time and pay big fines for something so stupid.  Make an example of them and maybe it will keep another dipshiat from doing something similar.
