I have a foolishly optimistic hope that this will eventually fully split the Republican Party and let them drop the religious and hate fueled parts of the party. Which then means that the Democratic Party may even be able to be a left wing or progressive party.

Soon we'll have the Jesus party, the Moar Jesus party (because the other party doesn't love Jesus enough), the Guns and Jesus party, the Republican-Libertarian party (all they want is legal weed and the gold standard RON PAUL), and finally the Moderate-Republicans (aka the Democrats)

We've already hit Peak White Conservative. The Tea Party wasn't an uprising, it was a last gasp.

Karl Rove knew it and he took/spent your donations anyway.

Followers of the gourd of Rove versus hopped up Koch-headed followers of the shoe?

Teatards planning on ditchin' Mitch in Kentucky?

Pseudo Patriots and Jebus freaks backed by deep pocketed naked capitalists in neo-libertarian clothing planning on primary-ing anyone who doesn't pass their "conservative enuff" purity test criteria?

Basically it's like Alien versus Predator in that no matter who wins... everyone else is pretty much hooped.

That noted, old skewl establishment GOP donors squaring off against their new and derpier opponents are in a battle that, considering the GOP's waning influence as a national party, at this point kind of resembles two junkies fighting over a plastic spoon.

The GOP revolution is on, babies, and it will not be televised ...just snarked about mightily on Fark.

Snark should be biblical in power and scope.

What other parts are there?  Republicans have the religious wing that hates sinners, and the money worshippers who hate the poor. Is there some other Republican group out there I am unaware of?

FTA:  Insurgent conservatives seeking to pull the Republican Party to the right raised more money last year than the groups controlled by the party establishment...

It's ironic that the thing that might save the Republican Party from the lunatics is public financing of elections.

A blast from the past:

Buchanan gave me a copy of a seven-page confidential memorandum-"A little raw for today," he warned-that he had written for Nixon in 1971, under the heading "Dividing the Democrats." Drawn up with an acute understanding of the fragilities and fault lines in "the Old Roosevelt Coalition," it recommended that the White House "exacerbate the ideological division" between the Old and New Left by praising Democrats who supported any of Nixon's policies; highlight "the elitism and quasi-anti-Americanism of the National Democratic Party"; nominate for the Supreme Court a Southern strict constructionist who would divide Democrats regionally; use abortion and parochial-school aid to deepen the split between Catholics and social liberals; elicit white working-class support with tax relief and denunciations of welfare. Finally, the memo recommended exploiting racial tensions among Democrats. "Bumper stickers calling for black Presidential and especially Vice-Presidential candidates should be spread out in the ghettoes of the country," Buchanan wrote. "We should do what is within our power to have a black nominated for Number Two, at least at the Democratic National Convention." Such gambits, he added, could "cut the Democratic Party and country in half; my view is that we would have far the larger half."

http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2008/05/26/080526fa_fact_packer?c ur rentPage=all

The problem is, they've isolated the other half (although they didn't take Goldwater's advice and simply saw off the Northeast from the rest of the country), and the half they won is getting smaller.

This has been coming for a long time now:

As southern control over the Republican agenda grows, the party alienates even conservative voters in other regions. The prevalence of right-to-work laws in southern states may be depriving Republicans of the socially conservative midwestern trade unionists whom they managed to split in the Reagan years, and sending Reagan Democrats back to their ancestral party in the process. Anti-government sentiment makes little sense in New England, where government, as even those who hate it will concede, is neither remote nor unresponsive.

The most profound clash between the South and everyone else, of course, is a cultural one. It arises from the southern tradition of putting values -- particularly Christian values -- at the center of politics. This is not the same as saying that the Republican Party is "too far right"; Americans consistently tell pollsters that they are conservative on values issues. It is, rather, that the Republicans have narrowly defined "values" as the folkways of one regional subculture, and have urged their imposition on the rest of the country. Again, the nonsoutherners who object to this style of politics may be just as conservative as those who practice it. But they are put off to see that "traditional" values are now defined by the majority party as the values of the U-Haul-renting denizens of two-year-old churches and three-year-old shopping malls.

/Oddly enough, that last piece was written two years before the "Red State/Blue State" divide in 2000.

You remember when your mom would come downstairs and catch your brother holding you down and making you hit yourself in the face while he said, "Why are you hitting yourself? Stop hitting yourself?" Watching the GOP is just like that but you're an only child.

I was listening to Limbaugh the other day. He was absolutely beside himself that Republicans are shifting their focus away from repealing Obamacare and toward "amnesty". His point was that brown people vote for Democrats, so offering them citizenship is a fool's errand. The disgust Republicans have for Republicans is delicious. It'll be interesting to see how this pans out as the teabaggers lose their dark money backers but retain their conservative media cheerleaders. I can imagine a mud fight between Fox News (desperate to retain relevance and cash flow) and Limbaugh/Beck/Savage (desperate to retain their teabagger audience). It would be glorious.
