He was great in one of the best war movies ever made, playing an aristocratic Prussian out to get himself a medal at the expense of his men in Sam Peckinpah's Cross of Iron.

At first, I was all like "that guy from Flash Gordon kicked it," then I was like "oh,it's the guy from "The Black Hole" then I thought "no, that was the robot named Maximillian" and then recognized him from "The Freshman."

Then I realized no, he was in "The Black Hole," and the actor Topol, who was in "Flash Gordon" looks much like him.

That's Max von Sydow who's still alive and working though perhaps not as spry these days.

It's sad that most people will only remember him for his part in one of the worst sci-fi movies ever made.

Yes, I know a lot of you love The Black Whole, but it's shiat. You like it because you were 13 or younger when you saw it.

I can still appreciate the "The Black Hole" even though I'm a grown man. Sure, the joyous wonder of it all is gone because the Star Wars rip-off 'bots smack of it now that I have an eye for some discernment, and sure the plot isn't all that intricate, but it certainly is not shiat.

The musical score may not have as much range as some other sci-fi flicks, but it's extremely memorable and on par in that department with Star Wars, The Indiana Jones films-all three of them, and Star Trek-in that respect, not to mention that ALL of the acting is top notch.

The Black Hole is still my favorite movie (saw it as a kid in the theater). Maximilian Schell really made the movie great.

walktoanarcade: but it certainly is not shiat.

If it had been made in 1959 and not 1979 it might have been an okay movie, and a pretty good movie as a genre film. But it wasn't It. The plot was hackneyed, the effects were a decade out of date, Old Bob, the horrible religious ending, etc... it was garbage.
