I don't think the protestants exactly "lost," and since they're the ones being dicks your tirade doesn't seem to make a lot of sense.

Actually the catholic-protestant thing is more of an English-Irish thing. The religions are just easy identifiers. A lot of Irish forget that one of their most famous Home Rule champions was protestant (Wolfe Tone).

I have a sister in the north and, according to her, it's pretty much a city thing, explaining why it always kicks off in Belfast. Around her people don't really consider themselves English or Irish, they're Northern Irish, and more people identify as atheist than anything else.

Having been born in Ireland I see the home rule point. But having grown up in the states, if I want to be consistent, I would have to give my house to the Miami tribe. The English have been in Ireland since before the pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock. The lines on the map are pretty much going to stay where they are.

My view tends to be, "Is there anyone displaced, now living, who can remember having lived on the disputed scrap of land?" If the answer is no, then STFU and go away. You lost. It's done. The israeli-Palestinian conflict is about 15 to 20 years away from being settled by that standard.

Didn't get a chance to see Northern Ireland when visiting, but went on a long road trip with my pop all around the southern half. Found the township with our family name, Croghan. Was sold expired batteries there too. Very friendly people and pretty countryside. Did find it strange that Coors Light was so damn popular. Loved the emphasis that distilleries placed on how superior triple distilled whiskey was over single or double.

That's not true at all. If anything, it's worse in some of the countryside. Fermanagh is one of the most extremely polarized and vicious areas for hatred on both sides. But, if your sister lives in a monolithically Catholic or monolithically Protestant rural area, then, yeah, no one cares because there's no one to hate.

Also, it's not "English". Very few of the Protestants are of primarily English ancestry. They're mostly Scottish in ancestry, brought over rather forcibly themselves by the English and sometimes called Ulsters Scots (Scots-Irish in the US).

I know... get a bunch of average NI protestants and NI catholics in a room together.  Ask them what the difference is between their two beliefs that makes it worth all of this. You will get no answer.

Religion makes otherwise normal people do stupid things. It makes stupid people do homicidal things.

The Catholics have their points too. The Protestants treated Catholics as second class citizens for so long that animosity was bound to set into the psyche. Heck, there were signs in Northern Ireland for Catholics that would remind you of the segregation era South. (e.g. establishments had signs directing Catholics to use the service entrance, not the main entrance, in the 1980's)

You treat a group of people like that, they band together. In the end, the Catholics had a strong support system and started displacing many Protestant businesses because they supported one another against their 'oppressors' in everything. This meant that Protestant neighborhoods / schools started crumbling while Catholic neighborhoods / schools became stronger.

Using the SAS was another problem. Really, they just solidified (and glorified) the 'freedom fighter' image of guys and gals opposing the hated crown. They actually legitimized the IRA as resisting the occupation. The Garda in Eire had the right idea, treat them as criminals (especially bombers) to de-legitimize them. The problem for the North was they couldn't really do that unless they shut down Orange groups, and that wouldn't do.

The whole situation is a giant cluster-f*ck. The 'Irish Problem' has haunted the Limeys for a very long time, and it won't really go away until the crown says that they're leaving it to it's own ends and tells everyone to grow the fark up, not to rely on them to enforce a system that's broken. The Republic has a little better record (the Garda normally doesn't take crap from the IRA) but they should only offer to let them join if they want, but maintain the status quo ante of keeping the IRA from trying to move guns.

Of course this would require everybody to be adults, and the only thing both side have been able to prove is that they let the trouble making children make their decisions for them: whether they're Orange or Green.

/come from a South Irish family
//Kilkerry, Kinsboro, and Queenboro primarily

I don't think that's what I was saying at all. Re my sister's area (Co. Down) she says it's a mix but most people are apolitical. If you get the chance, go. It's some of the most beautiful parts of Ireland. True, I wasn't thinking about more recent rounds of annexations and settlements, which will keep shiat stirred for a long time, and shouldn't be happening. Claims about anything before 1967 should be mooted in that 15-20 years, though.

There's an interesting documentary about the first humans to populate the New World. It turns out Negroid people from the South Pacific were here in South America far earlier than the land bridge Mongoloid peoples. And apparently, they were pretty much wiped out by violence from the Mongoloids moving down into South America. Except for a tiny colony in Tierra del Fuego.

This is a British paper, so there's a certain amount of assumed context that non-British readers aren't going to get.

This isn't just another political party, so I'll fill you foreigners in. "Sinn Fein" is well-understood to be the political wing of the IRA (Irish Republican Army), and often endorse them with nudge-nudge-wink-wink rhetoric. So this is more then mere partisan bickering with an innocent local politician caught in the middle. It's the little issue of being intolerant of terrorists and those who cheer them on. Fenians got a lot more grief back when the IRA were in full swing though.
