Police identified the mother as Yolanda Ostoloza, 39, of Hollywood, but her Facebook page and other public records list her name as Yolanda Ostolaza.

I'm so glad that the Sun Sentinel ferreted out that important distinction from Facebook and other public records.  Whoever said that print journalism was a dying art?

I don't get the business model here.

Sure, there's demand for underage prostitutes. Maybe there's even so much demand that there are guys who will risk the random off-the-street solicitation of some out-of-town redneck mom, instead of going through the established (and presumably much safer) mobbed-up channels.

But does the Super Bowl really change the demand curve here? The few extra people that the game is bringing into the NYC area (home to ~15M people and more than enough underage prostitutes) are the ones who can afford to hire the sufficiently legal 19-year-old through the escort service in the phone book. That is, the 19-year-old who just does a better 15-year-old impression than any 15-year-old alive.

I think Mom should have paged through her old microeconomics textbook before committing to this bit of entrepreneurship.

Going out on a limb here, but perhaps she wasn't marketing her daughter as being underaged. A 15-year-old could theoretically be passed off as an adult.

mikaloyd: Thats the creepiest post Ive read all week. Its too bad we can only vote funny or smart on posts. If there had been a creepy button Id have clicked it for you.

Sorry (and for once on Fark I mean that). Let me come at it in a less creepy fashion.

Underage prostitution is horrible, but it happens. Because it's a very serious crime, the people who seek it out are either incredibly risk-tolerant (i.e., have very little to lose), or go to extraordinary lengths to mitigate that risk (i.e., by dealing with organized crime or finding ways to commit the crime without  actuallycommitting the crime).

So if you're desperate enough to pimp out your own underage daughter (and let's assume this is desperation and not just balls-out evil), you ought to ask yourself if there's any chance whatsoever that this could work out. And you do NOT have to have been an econ major to understand why this was going to end up with both of them in custody or dead, 99 times out of 100.

People are stupid. But even very stupid, very desperate people manage to avoid making choices this stupid on a daily basis. So either this was a  titanically bad choice from someone who's gotten good at making them, or getting caught far away from home was the point. At the end of this, the daughter will be a thousand miles away from her previous problems and in the hands of people who can better deal with her than Mom, and Mom will probably be doing better in jail/probation/etc. than she was on her own. I hope that's it. But then maybe it's just a six-sigma bad life decision.

Sometimes people think that if they sweet talk the police they can get off, like when you are caught speeding.  What they fail to realize is the police can't and won't let you off when the stakes has been raised to a felony.

At this point, anything you say is just helping strengthen their case against you.

Yes.  It's human nature to think one can just explain to the cops, act contrite and/or be cooperative and it'll all be better.

But in reality its best to keep quiet, ask for counsel and if its appropriate (as determined by counsel) then ask for a deal or prepare what you will say to the police in preparation for defense.

The prosecutor isn't going to cut you out of deal just because you weren't talking to the police right away and asked for counsel before you would speak.  You always have that right.

MajorTubeSteak: Wasilla Hillbilly: MajorTubeSteak: SirDigbyChickenCaesar: SirEattonHogg: Why do people accused of a crime just open their stupid craw and say whatever comes to mind without waiting for their attorney?

Are you asking why a woman,  who was just was arrested for pimping out her 15 year old, would make a bad decision?

The suspects typically want to minimize their actions or want some sort of "understanding" from the police.

Will sit there in depth explaining why his wife needed the frying pan across the mouth.

Sometimes people think that if they sweet talk the police they can get off, like when you are caught speeding.  What they fail to realize is the police can't and won't let you off when the stakes has been raised to a felony.

At this point, anything you say is just helping strengthen their case against you.

Gotta call BS on this one. I've talked my way out of a felony on more than one occasion. That said, in many cases and for most people, keeping your trap shut is generally good policy. If you know what not to say, there is little risk.

I'm not smooth enough to sell ice cubes to Eskimos, so if I am ever in that in that situation.  I'm gonna STFU, and let me lawyer work his magic.

Fair enough. Funny though, I actually have been referred to in that way many times ("could sell ice cubes to an Eskimo", etc.), and I don't usually take offense as it is often, I believe, said as a compliment. However, I don't like it because it insinuates that I am being deceptive. I am usually completely sincere. Sincere and convincing. I wouldn't sell you something that I didn't honestly believe had value and could improve your life, so to speak.

Only a misdemeanor??? WHAT IN THE EVERLOVING F***???

Dude. Chill. She was just gonna do fetish stuff. District attorneys understand these things and have discretion regarding what kind of charges to assign. I mean if it had been for something, uh, non-fetishy, I'm sure the charges would reflect that and be a felony.

Oh, wonderful. This is all the confirmation people are going to need to double down on the "Super Bowl is the biggest sex trafficking event" (or "venue") derp that sprung out of fevered imaginations a few years ago, after "Super Bowl is the biggest domestic violence day" was completely discredited.

Inevitably they're also the same morons who confuse any kind of prostitution with involuntary sex trafficking.

Someone in the media has been working WAY too hard to link the Superbowl to sex trafficing this year.

Considering the super bowl leads to more cops going undercover, anyone who would solicit a prostitute or john at the superbowl is a dumbass.

And this. The "Super bowl is the biggest sex trafficking event in the world" was debunked a long time ago, too, yet people believe it when groups say 300,000 sex trafficking victims are brought in for the super bowl (even though there is no way in hell that number could be accurate without a lot of people noticing; 300,000 additional people in a metro area of 1 million would be pretty damn noticable).

Who are you referring as "she"? Mom, or daughter?

If Mom, I pity your standard, if daughter, you are a pedo.

Well around here I would assume she would get hot with
Pandering felony 4
Contrib misd 1
Neglect felony 6

Now the thing is, typically, the arresting officer will only charge the misdemeanor. The prosecutor and investigators charge the felonies. So when you see some terrible offense reported with a minor charge...more typically are dropped on the offender. The rule is charge the slam dunk that will keep them in jail and let everyone else pour through the evidence to see which will stick.

Uhhh, you also missed the hot when I meant hit and a couple glaring comma omissions.  If you are going to be a grammar douchebag atleast do it well.  Otherwise, you might just come across as just a douchebag that wants to critique someone's writing in an online post.  Now I am not saying you are a douchebag, I am sure that you are one of the few academic white knights that wants to champion the Kings English in all its written forms, I am just saying the layperson might just view you as a douchebag.

Other than rumors that toilet flushing during half time raised concern amongst some municipalities, I'd never heard of the Superbowl/Sex Trafficking as being more extreme than any major sporting event or political convention.  BTW, does Obama have some sort of alibi to imply that he wasn't behind all of this?  I'm sure there are some impeachable offenses in this story we're just not hearing.

God_Almighty_Himself: iheartscotch: Jesus; a mom trying to pimp out her own daughter.

The cops handcuffed her so, in a way, the daughter did end up only doing "fetish stuff" that night.

I was wondering how far into the "service" the detective went before he pulled out the handcuffs.  And I'll bet you a dollar he saw / touched / was touched more than the report will list.

Here we have an example of a debate technique. When the opponent raises a valid winning point that cannot be refuted AND an ad hominem attack, point out the ad hominid attack and ignore the rest. This way, the audience won't see you fail as you try to refute it and distract them away from the opponent's winning statements.
