Butterflew: kbronsito:

Real nations get to pick the anthem they want. The current PR official anthem was a runner-up.... because the original was deemed to be subversive by American authorities.  The original anthem's lyrics spoke of revolution and independence (from Spain) and the gringos thought a less confrontational song about how pretty PR is would make a better anthem. It would be the equivalent of someone forcing the US to replace the Star Spangled Banner with America the Beautiful. It's actually kind of sad and pathetic.

The original anthem is like a mile long and talks about machetes and Cuba. I can totally see singing that at school and at the Olympics.

The Star Spangled Banner talks about bombs. Machetes were a weapons used by nationalist fighters in both Cuba and PR. Most national anthems make references to war and violence.

And the reason Cuba is named in the original anthem is because when Jose Marti declared Cuban independence, he was also declaring PR independence. Many Puerto Ricans fought in Cuba. It was a bigger front and the more valuable colony. Once Cuba was free, the Spanish would have less of an incentive to keep Puerto Rico and the Cubans had vowed to take the fight over to PR if they had to. That's why they belonged in that anthem and why the flags are similar.

You are not a garden variety Puerto Rican, you do not drive around listening to Daddy Yankee at full volume, have Boricua tattooed across your boobs, or have thrown an entire cabinets of pots and pans at your boyfriend have you?

I've lost a brother and a mother.  There is no "one right way" to grieve or process a death.  Sure, this looks weird, but the wishes of the deceased, being honored, might soothe the grief of those left behind.   So fark it.  Celebrate the life, because what's the point of belaboring the death?  Grieve if you must, but if you want to, PARTY DOWN.  Heck, can't we do both?  Even at the same time?  I know I did, with my bro and mom.

I'm Cuban-American, born and raised in PR, I know the history. My point was that we HAVE a national anthem. Sorry if it isn't independentista enough for you, or the one you think we should have. get yourself a time machine and go fix it.

LOL. Maybe they don't invite the paps to that party!

Side note: I like your Fark handle.  Reminds me of when I lived in Pasadena back in the 90's, just a few blocks from Colorado Boulevard. There was a massive arcade just a couple miles from my house and I used to walk to it all the time.  They had EVERYTHING.  Elevator Action, Defender, Spy Hunter, everything.  Good times.  Thanks for the memory jog.

Only that it wasn't broad enough.

/"Race" is being phased out of any kind of scientific recognition.

Wat

Race is not scientific. Period. We humans fark too much with whatever moves in order for there to be strictly separated genomes. Race is now a commercial qualifier in the industry of breeding cats, dogs and horses. As it should be.

"Puerto Rican" is an ethnicity/nationality... not a race.

What do you think a "race" is, you farking moron?

My "Race" is Caucasian.
My "Nationality" is American
My "Ethnicity" is a mix of Scottish, German, Irish, English, and Cherokee.

do you understand now, you farking moran?

Your 'race' and 'ethinicity' are whatever you want them to be, sport. Your nationality is in your passport. None of these qualifiers are in any way exact or scientific, and neither should they be.

2014-02-01 01:10:35 PM

Butterflew: The "race" is Hispanic. The nationality is Puerto Rican. Or Cuban. Or Guatemalan. Or Mexican. Take your pick.

Hispanic isn't a "race". It's an ethnicity.

This is why I want to be plastinated, so I can be propped up anywhere, forever. I'll be a collectible - a huge Gumby doll to be stored in the garage and pulled out at Halloween, or maybe used to hold signs, or as a scarecrow. Why waste a good hunk of flesh? Modern sterile processes, new-age polymers - it's the way to go. We've got to get over our fear of hanging around with plastic dead people.

You're welcome.

Your memory jog jogged my memory of a literal honest-to-goodness mom & pop burger joint that used to exist. They had Spy Hunter and a few others. Excellent cheeseburgers and non-greasy fries for cheap, and the games set to medium difficulty,(the pinball was 50 cents, so that usually broke my budget, though, hence less play heh) not a bad way for a young boy to spend an afternoon; the owners would even smile and lean in and watch sometimes like you may have seen in a movie. Was so sad when they sold it
. (as a possible quirk of fate, the new owners of the location are extremely nice)

So for all intents and purposes you are Puerto Rican but with Cuban heritage.

I am American born with Colombian heritage.  I do not say Colombian-American, because it would sound just as silly as Cuban-American born.  Especially, Cuban American, Puerto Rican born.  I have citizen ship in Colombia,  Panama, and the US.  I was born in the US, so I am just american.

Unfortunately, many US Puerto Ricans who run around with Puerto Rican flags on their cars, calling themselves boricuas, and who only know middle school Spanish, have no clue about their protectorate or their culture.  They just pay lip service to it, because like most Americans they look for something to base their identity on.    Latinos have too much false pride.

And as a brown person Puerto Rico needs to become a state or go at it alone.  Right, now you have all the bennies without any of the downside.  Who would want to become a state?

The guy was merely pointing out that your national anthem was whitewashed...

Wait, Puerto Ricans are a race now? Just like Mexicans, you get enough of them together, they claim thay're a "race" as well, but truth be told, they share a common European ancestor, despite most of them coming to America via the Canary Islands.
Sure they breed like beetles in "The Mummy" but overall it's a cultural thing, and nothing race based about it.
/A 5-15 record? I have a better track record from fighting with my wife.
