(Mother Nature Network)   Why do we celebrate Groundhog Day? There is no way that this winter is *ever* going to end as long as this groundhog keeps seeing his shadow. I don't see any other way out. He's got to be stopped   (mnn.com) divider line 57

As someone who grew up elsewhere but now lives in Pennsylvania, allow me to shed some light on this phenomena.  It's because Pennsylvanians are farked in the head (offer does not apply to Pittsburgh, which is awesome.)

Pretty much, but at least we're not Ohio.  Down here in Fayette county, you'd swear you were already in West by-god Virginia.  I personally know people who make moonshine, and note that's plural.  Pittsburgh is a little unique, it wasn't really planned it just sort of happened.  Bunch of small towns together reached critical mass and accidentally a city.

Damn.... This thread had the potential for grand descriptions of violent acts against the oversized rodent too....

There is a reason why the state is often referred to as Pennsyltucky.

I would pay good money to see Phil assassinated. Some sharpshooter up in a tree with a high powered rifle, as soon as the thing sticks his nose up - POW!

I have nothing against the rodent, personally. I would just love to see the national news top story to be about "Groundhog Assassinated!" "You may find these images disturbing..." People claiming that it was an act of terrorism, or blaming it on the far left or right. Marching some hapless hunter through the Puxutany courthouse... "I didn't shoot any rodent, no sir . . . I'm just a patsy." Trying to decide whether being shot dead before he saw or didn't see his shadow portends six more weeks, or not, or an endless winter...

Groundhog Day was Hedgehog Day in Europe for ages before it came to the new world and a new critter was conscripted into the role.

Also, Punxsutawney means "Land of the sand flies" in the Lenape language...

As a resident of that godforsaken frozen city by the frozen lake, I'd like to see Phil burnt in effigy, not only would we finally be rid of this horrible rodent with unholy powers, I might be able to warm up a bit.

The whole state is not Pennsyltucky -- just that region between Pittsburgh and Philadephia (shown in white):

While that does encompass most of the land of the state, the majority of the population is in the two big cities.

I'm right there with you, subby. I'm going to give you a prediction about this winter. It's going to be cold, it's going to be dark, and it's going to last you for the rest of your life.

I'd go to Wiarton and strangle that inbred albino varmit pest.  I used to live near there many many moons ago.

Groundhog Day doesn't matter anyway. According to the calendar, the Spring Equinox is about 6 weeks after that day (or close enough). So, there'll always be six more weeks of winter, regardless.

This is pitiful. A thousand people, freezing thier butts off, waiting to worship a rat.

HEY! HEY! HEY! PEOPLE, relax on the poor rodent.
Everybody knows that the only way to affect weather is to allow gay marriage.

When Chekhov saw the long winter, he saw a winter bleak and dark and bereft of hope. Yet we know that winter is just another step in the cycle of life. But standing here among the people of Punxsutawney and basking in the warmth of their hearths and hearts, I couldn't imagine a better fate than a long and lustrous winter.

I had to trap a groundhog that was living under my front stoop last year, so I'm getting a kick...

I would pay good money to see Richard Sherman ranting to some sidelines reporter something like "Why do we have to keep playing the game over and over and why does the radio play the same Sonny and Cher song every morning?".
