Authoritarians need someone to push around.

"Paid leave". How is that a consequence?

Sloppy joe!

Maybe they should spend a bit more time figuring out why the kids account was empty? Parents need to be responsible too you know.

2014-02-01 09:12:06 AM
It seems to me that they're being punished(?) for getting caught, not for taking the food away.

Yup.  As a kid I remember certain faculty and staff who would look for any pretense to jump on a kid's shiat.   Everyone working in school where minors are present needs to pass a very thorough psyche exam, and not just a criminal background check.

So, they get a farking PAID VACATION?! WTF?

Damn you, you poor, we're going to make you eat fruit and milk instead of sugar-and-HFCS-based food products.

For some, it was probably just bad luck. If the school failed to alert the parents, many probably didn't notice.

Democrats and Republicans can still come together for a photo op.

Ooh a paid vacation. Harsh!

I'll bet that school runs all the kids through rigorous "anti-bullying" programs. A shame the adults are exempt.

State Sen. Todd Weiler, a Republican, posted a tweet about his visit: "Best nugget of the Uintah school lunch story: 5th grader were particularly horrified that food was being discarded in 'pizza day'!"

Oh, HELL NO! Even as terrible as school pizza can be, that was the day we all looked forward to. It was probably the least disgusting thing they served. With as nasty as my school could get, whoever took the lunches would have been lucky to just get slashed tires. You do NOT fark with the pizza

Step 2: Altemeyer's authoritarianism scale
Step 3: Hare psychopathy checklist
Step 4: narcissistic personality inventory

Her daughter, Sophia Isom, recounted how she was met by a district nutrition manager who confiscated her school lunch and threw it away, the station reported.

Wait.  So the school threw out the food anyway, which means they lost/spent the money on the food anyway? So the net effect was the kid didn't eat their meal (I see they got fruit and milk, so not completely hungry), and the school can't charge the parents for the meal?  Farking brilliant.

All this served to do was embarrass some kids and cost the school money.  They should be fired.

That district nutrition manager deserves to get hit by a car.

If it's like the local school board here, after 6-8 months leave they'll end up in some sort of district or school-wide "supervisor" position.  Or what we call "screw up, move up".

2014-02-01 09:51:40 AM
I love it! a situation that should have been blamed on negligent parents (and handled with the parents) was turned by absolute incompetents with zero tolerance attitudes into a major fiasco. and the politicos, instead of letting it sort itself out, jumped in for photo ops and promises of more government interference in education. Now the education budget, which is already strained, will be further abused to make sure that "NO CHILD GOES HUNGRYTM."

Horseshiat. The systems send multiple alerts to parents. It's almost impossible not to know the account is low.

Oh the outrage over this.

But how would they get future managers?  All these are qualifications for that job.

Fear the Clam: Damn you, you poor, we're going to make you eat fruit and milk instead of sugar-and-HFCS-based food products.

In fairness, the kids with food taken were non-poors(if the lunch system works like it does here). Only kids who pay for lunches would have a negative account balance.

/didnt read details of this outrage story
//kids have been given pbj and milk when i forgot to recharge account

As a parent, I can assure you that is the child's job to not inform the parent when their school lunch account goes negative.  When the child is given payment to increase the balance, odds are that at least a week will pass before the child actually remembers to put the money into the account.

These are simple rules, and we've followed them for decades.

Bet these kids will remember next time.

Really, the only part of this that outrages me is that they took the food away from the kids and then threw it away.

If the alternative is throwing food away, then let the kid eat the food and call the parents to let them know they need to send money.

What the hell happened to sending the kid to school with lunch money every day? We didn't need lunch accounts back in the get off my lawn days.

2014-02-01 10:49:53 AM
Once again, it's okay to snatch money from the hands of people that earn it, but snatch away somebody's hand-out that they may or may not be entitled to, and you've committed a grievous offense.

Does this mean that I can walk into any cafeteria, put food on my tray, and walk away with it, and if anybody takes it from me, they've trampled upon my "civil rights"?

2014-02-01 10:50:40 AM
My kid's school has been using the lunchprepay.com website for a couple of years now. I get an email whenever the balance gets below $10 and it reminds me to add money. Very convenient, since the school cashier was NEVER in her office during her farking office hours in order to take payments. The website charges a convenience fee (about a dollar) to use the service, but it is completely worth it to not have to deal with the nonexistent school cashier.

Absolutely.  You're entitled to everything you've ever wanted, and nobody should stop you from taking it.  You go out and do anything your precious heart desires, and I assure you, the outrage over any consequences will take care of any trouble you get into.

2014-02-01 11:07:45 AM
I don't get the title "nutrition manager". Shouldn't such a manager be concerned with nutrition, and not with account balances?

2014-02-01 11:12:39 AM
FTFA: should be fired because they "used (their) power to humiliate and embarrass children,"

Well, then you'd have almost no school administrators/teachers left!

2wolves: Authoritarians need someone to push around.

*high five*

I'm thinking of a very simple solution - cut administration payroll (I'd suggest cutting sports teams also but I'm not wearing my asbestos underwear today), and feed the kids from that money.  Then the school can honestly say they don't want any children going hungry.

What bugged me the most was the fact the one senator paid for the other's lunch. This is a wacky idea, but why not pick up the kid's lunch tabs, instead. You know, the ones who had no money? I'm sure he could have written the expense off...

Are kids forbidden from bringing their own food to school these days?

At the school I work at, pretty much every kid brings their own lunch. Sandwiches, leftovers from supper, etc. are the norm.

The school can't sell or provide "unhealthy" food, but the kids can bring whatever they want from home.

There're a few rules about not bringing peanut products because of allergies, but that's it.

I doubt a place that would throw out food in front of a kid would manage to send out notifications.

That's the part that bothered the most too.

What purpose did that serve other than to humiliate & embarrass the students?

Gortex: Are kids forbidden from bringing their own food to school these days?

Probably because they can't get sweet sweet wonderful federal grant money for every kid home lunches don't fulfil nutritional requirements mandated by school policy.

/cue Canadian story charging $CDN 5 for junkfood.

Because then you end up with the lunch lady who was skimming the cash register for years, like we had here in Atlanta.
