Thanks for nothing, Apple, you c*cks.

2014-01-31 08:32:34 PM
Did that even make it into a release version of their OS?

2014-01-31 08:33:47 PM
The difference here is Apple 86'd this idea before releasing it, and Microsoft forced it down the throat of millions for years.

You do realize it could be turned off right?

I guess nobody at Apple could picture Jobs being friendly and helpful.

2014-01-31 08:54:03 PM
So test code for a 30 year old operating system is somehow news now?

2014-01-31 08:56:22 PM
So by extension does this make ALL help menus a copy of Apple.

Also a shiatty Mac blog linking to an article from ANOTHER shiatty Mac blog?

/Seriously?  WTF?

2014-01-31 08:57:29 PM
I'd be kinda of fun if they programmed it like Jobs actually talked to people:

"Steve Sez 'This document is shiat and I refuse to even let it stink up our computers. Deleting file now.'"

/Or something like that..

So once again ubersoft lied, it wasn't binky that was the oldest, it was steve who was made first by the boss

I had no problems with Clippy.

Wait, so stealing things from a company that hasn't had an original product in their entire existence is a bad thing?

2014-01-31 09:20:50 PM
LOL shiat FROM 2 MS OFFICE RELEASES AGO

2014-01-31 09:21:08 PM
Didn't Apple steal its entire OS from Zerox? Pretty sure they did exactly that.

Harbinger of the Doomed Rat: Wait, so stealing things from a company that hasn't had an original product in their entire existence is a bad thing?

Not true. Steve Wozniak put some fantastic engineering work into the Apple II.

JohnnyC: Didn't Apple steal its entire OS from Zerox? Pretty sure they did exactly that.

Xerox, yes, with a but.

"But Apple had already developed its own version of the graphical display before the PARC visit -- it's just that its engineers kept running into problems that PARC had plainly solved. Atkinson later said that he didn't steal PARC's version, but that seeing there was a solution "empowered" him to invent his own solution, which went into the original Mac."

Basically they visited PARC, saw a working GUI and went bananas. Xerox should have released it, but the heads in charge didn't see a use for a personal PC and they were in the print business.

You're right subby. It is an entirely unlikely story. Had you not provided the proof for us, I might never have believed it.

Microsoft Assistant "technology" (using the t-word loosely here) originated from Microsoft Bob, their bizarre UI that for some reason was based on a home interior. It wasn't just a dialog box with a face in it.

If anything, it looks more like this:

Wait, so the idea of having [popup] help was Apple's? Really? That's the claim?

Clippy? or the computer?

You are wrong.
Xerox was paid.
The ripping off story is a lie spread by MS fanbois.

A graduate student at the university I now work at just won a major award (must be Italian!) for developing technology that lets people with paralyzed limbs partially flex their muscles using nerve endings from parts of their body that still have feeling.  Someone from the student newspaper asked him if he felt like the next Steve Jobs for an article and he had the most diplomatic smackdown response I think I've ever heard:

"If I was more concerned with the design than making people walk again, I'd feel like Steve Jobs.  But I don't have his talent, so we'll just have to settle for walking."

You could SEE the sarcasm dripping of the page.

Why are Apple fans so insecure that everything they do must be compared to a Microsoft or Android product/feature?

Farking Canuck: Why are Apple fans so insecure that everything they do must be compared to a Microsoft or Android product/feature?

Because Apple stock is tanking and they haven't done anything original since the iPad, they need something to lord over others.

This implies that the iPad was original.

Came here to say this. It's much more SimCity.

Clippy (Bob and Agent too) was a fully scripted avatar and later versions could even talk. This was simply replacing the help icon with one of the Steves.

All this really shows is that somebody who is very smart and knowledgeable in his own specialty can still be a brainwashed ignorant tool in other areas.

It's amusing seeing the number of farkers unable to find the "turn of clippy" checkbox.

That's a bug that Microsoft needs to fix with Clippy. It should be "Looks like you're about to commit suicide." It shouldn't say "Looks like your committing suicide unless the Clippy AI program can use the webcam to see the person, then it wouldn't have to ask in how the person is committing suicide!" :-)

Interdasting...

I was actually looking for a stand-alone version of Clippy while at work today. My work is Linux servers and network devices, but I thought be funny to have Clippy on my Windows 7 Workstation, but the only download I could find to put Clippy on my desktop was blocked as malware.

Bring back Clippy!!!... for the LULZ!

Did Microsoft rip off the idea or did they come up with Clippy independently?

2014-02-01 02:10:41 AM
That is absolutely nothing like Clippy in any way. Just because a dialog box has someone's picture on it doesn't make it like Clippy. Someone still got paid to write this stupid article though, and I was stupid enough to have read it.

This, friends, is known as "a stretch."

I just do not understand.

Are we messing with MS for possibly copying the idea, or Apple for "inventing" that atrocity?

2014-02-01 09:12:03 AM
If you opened one of the readme.doc files in Windows 2000 you could find "hidden" text that said the file was written on Word for Mac.
