True.  Neither of my kids have ever lived in a household without a dog.  Losing a dog will be tough for them, but I wouldn't trade the benefits of having a dog to escape the pain of losing one.

Get them used to the idea with shorter lived pets that are also less bonding. Gold fish, hamster, etc.

Or you could just send the dog to that farm upstate where all the blind dogs with cancer live.


We started my kid with garden snails. They're free, easily replaceable, and more fun than something like goldfish that you can't actually handle.

Have had fish, but it's not the same.
